Tennessee Postgame Discussion

This is year TWO in a major rebuild
Yes for now their is a gap but we've closed it very quickly
Defense can out played by a great offensive scheme and a few more plays, they will be better then last year
with NIL, every year is year one of a major rebuild.
Look at UNC. 70 - seventy! - new players.

Outside of the ball security, for his first game in that environment I thought Angeli was fine. He is not McCord, and today was a tall order. He shows good composure and sees the field well.
I expect he will speed up his processing and get the ball out quicker as the season progresses. Tennessee was teeing off with a multiple score lead the entire game.
My concern is with the run defense and defensive play calling.

Nixon generated 62 yards on 11 touches. Not awful.

If you give Willis all of Nixon's workload, he gets 33 touches and will never last the season.

Willis is awesome. Nixon is good too.
Nixon looked great last year before getting injured. He didn’t look bad today but didn’t shine like Willis did.

Usual people overreacting. Angeli looked good, we had hiccups, defense was bad. On to next week. We’re an 8 win team.
Get outta here, 8 win team? Maybe 5 at best.. guys need to take your franchise goggles off. There isn’t a good “coach” on the defensive side of the ball, including Fran. Great recruiters bad coaches

I thought Angeli settled in nicely. This was an elite defense he was going against and only his 2nd start ever, 1st on an entirely new team. Not worried about the offense, Nixon is a great coach and I’m confident we’re going to score points. The only thing that I’m concerned about is the defense from this year looks like the defense from last year.

Angeli plays soft, he is the Charmin Man. He is a decent thrower, but I didnt see anything spectacular in terms of either arm strength or ball placement. He reminded me of DeVito. You just CANNOT fumble for a defensive TD the play after we get a TO. Obviously, his lack of mobility and toughness is a big liability. If there are games when our O line dominates, he will do well. I just dont see this kid elevating the team when we are physically neutral or physically outmanned as we were today.

Not trying to pin the result on Angeli, obviously there was no overcoming the lack of D this afternoon, but college football has become a game where plus QB play is essential, and I am not seeing that we have that.

Game was a blowout, not even as close as the final score, I really wanted to get a glimpse of Collins near the end.
He definitely reminded me of Devito in terms of his general feel for spacing, leverage, etc…or lack there of. Just not a great athlete and definitely left some opportunities on the table. All things considered though, he played pretty decent.

go ahead and save the receipt, im not sweating this game.

Eight.

Im giving e rob a pass. He was bad last year i get it. We lost the guts of our d, minus grant, this year. He gets time.
No offense, but time for what? We we were a bit below average last year with a defense featuring 5 guys drafted or UDFA. We had talent, and have talent this year (with Safety/star being a challenge). But poor results.

Erob kept playing a 5 man box vs. the best rushing team, in the best conference (3 years in a row). HOW DO YOU DO THAT?

We kept playing a 3rd and 20 defensive formation on 2nd down! (Our d WAS significantly better in the second half when he stopped doing that, but the damage was done ).

But he is out schemed, constantly.

Deuce should not be starting, and I believe Samuels did not “really” earn the starting spot in camp. (I assume he will get much better).

Honestly, I was disappointed.
Me too. The defense was horrible. I believe on the staff to build on it though. Tennessee in Atlanta week 1 is as tough a draw as we’ve had in memory. Only thing I can be upset about is the defense. OL was porous but itll clean up.

We've heard it in every thread. It's getting old. The guy won 10 games last year and we just played a good SEC team. Keep it all in perspective.

Angeli was not so great, holds the ball to long. Reminds me of Devito. Hopefully, better next week. Those turnovers were killers. The interception was all Angelis fault to start the second half.
I think 2 things can be true. He held the ball too long, and had 2 turnovers, true.

But also had 271 yards passing vs a top SEC defense on the road, with lots of pressure all day. He was poised.

Only Georgia and Ohio State had more points vs them last year. We easily could have had 31-35 (2 exp plus FG at end) with different COACHING decisions. His performance was better than expected IMO.
