The 2021-2022 Portal Cup

Sports Illustrated on the big winners in the portal this weekend.

DE Francois Nolton - Syracuse

How's this for production? The newest Orange pass rusher had as big a 2021 season as any edge prospect could have hoped for, accumulating 80 tackles, 28 tackles for loss and 25 sacks for south Florida staple Miami (Fla.) Edison High School.

A former Florida Gator commitment, the long and lean edge talent reset his recruitment after the coaching change in Gainesville and jumped on the 'Cuse offer after his official visit to Central New York over the weekend. It's a big win for SU, as Nolton becomes the headlining recruit for the Orange class of 2022, now holding steady with 14 recruits on board.

Oklahoma and other programs efforted late in the game for the prospect with an elite first step, but the process is shut down to the program that initially offered him as a high school freshman.
"It felt like home," Nolton told All Syracuse. "Getting me up there early, learning all the plays and work. Get into the weight room."

This is the type of PR we need

I’d like to know what percentage of those portal transfers have found increased playing time at their new school. Or what other metrics of success apply?

They need the education and contacts from college to advance in their future jobs.
That is very old school. Kids today learn what they need on YouTube and network across the globe via social media and video conferencing.
Unless you are going into a field that requires a degree for a license, school is often an economic loser (not for scholarship athletes).
Just saw a kid just won on the Korn tour. Decided to turn pro at 17. One should not have to go to college to be pro athlete.

9 starts at Left Tackle, honorable mention All-big10 and from Conway, SC.

Recruiting a quality QB out of HS has never been less important
Alternatively, it's more important because you may get an advantage already having a relationship if a second chance pops up.

There’s a lot of quality players still in the portal and a lot quality kids still hitting it daily.

Seems strange that the leading WR receiver on the national championship team had less than 500 yards. And no RB had 1,000 yards.

Of course, the TE had a crazy year. So did the defense.

I wonder why many of these guys have waited until now to put their names in the portal.
