The 2021-2022 Portal Cup

The kid has thrown for 8,000+ yards and 70 touchdowns and he has two (maybe three) seasons remaining?? These extra Covid years, combined with portal jumping means kids are going to set records that may never be broken.
Yup players like Sam Hartman have a chance to destroy records. If Buddy Boeheim was to come back he will be on the same boat.

I wonder how many coaches are looking closer at the portal players with an eye towards/closer scrutiny of peripheral issues (behaviors, academics, family, etc.) as opposed to the standard measurable we assume coaches coaches use to determine who to recruit.

Some should be easy to conclude they want playing time/exposure for future opportunities (NFL). Others may be a team ng that they are a problem child in the locker room or outside of football.
Absolutely. That's the same reason why some kids are transferring. Coaches taking chances on kids they thought was worth it. "He has great measurables and upside, lets get em". Only to find out some of these kids dont have the work ethic, can't stop smokin weed or just can't keep up academically. They push kids out that show these red flags.

Similar to dance floor at Braggs at 1:59 am with the meatloaf song playing just before lights come on. You go for solid measurable not perfection.
And than... You Pound it.

Doubt Gabriel decommits from UCLA and goes to Oklahoma if he thinks Caleb was returning-He gone.
Not necessarily.

UCLA has their returning starter plus 3 other scholarship QBs. Gabriel is competing no matter what there.

OU has 3 scholarship QBs with Caleb and 2 without. One is a Penn St transfer and the other an incoming Freshman. The path is easier even if Caleb stays, as he did get benched last year at times for decisions he made during games.

The new OC at OU also recruited and coached Gabriel at UCF, so there is familiarity too.

Marshall starting QB Grant Wells is entering the transfer portal. He’d be a good one

Following the tweets below that Info…,
Makes no sense to compare those portal players (9%) with head coaching changes (21%). Many of those coaches got fired. They didn’t choose to go in the coaching portal.

Ehhhh some of these kids have gotten “the talk” from their coaches at the program they are at that it might be best to move on

Some, but I think a lot of them had buyers remorse, felt they deserved more playing time or coaches left the program. Remember this is an ongoing count since 8/1.

I’m sure that’s the case… and more so at the top performing programs.

And previously a kid might have 6 months to find another school. Now you may only 6 weeks, until either start of New year semester, or Feb signing day.
They can still sign after the second signing date, just won't be able to arrive on campus until Summer Session. April 1 is the final date to sign.

21 more players in the portal today. It’s crazy how many players are giving up a guaranteed scholarship for a chance at more playing time. When the music stops there are going to be a lot of players standing without a chair. There are more players in the portal then available spots. It’s unfortunate that a number are leaving really good academic institutions without graduating for the possibility of more playing time a less prestigious university. They are adults so this will be a hard learning lesson for some.
