The committee finally annoyed the talking heads

Leading up to that LSU game, there were two powers. They hosted the other power at home, lost, and then played a crappy schedule after that, and did not play in their conference championship. But people decided they were better ahead of time, and they were given another chance to play on a neutral field the team that they already lost to. Again, at home. They had their chance, failed, and were given another one, not on merit, but simply because people said they're better.

That's fine, but who do you pick if not Alabama?

With a loss to Iowa state, who was 3-6 in conference.
Yes, that's right.

Edited to include: See, when you get to play the #1 ranked team in the country on your home field and lose to them, and then don't beat anyone of note after that, and also have that loss to the #1 team knock you out of playing in your conference championship...

Well, to me that means you go to the next person in line.

And the year after that lost a home game to Texas A&M and barely dropped in the rankings

And then went on to win the NC in convincing fashion.

I just don't understand your logic. Alabama lost to the #1 team in the country by 3 in OT. Their only loss. Won 3 other games in decisive fashion against top 25 teams and then beat that #1 team 21-0 in the NC game in LSU's backyard. Compare that to a loss to Iowa State by OkSt? Seriously?

Yeah I don't buy that logic at all. The two best teams should pay for the title...and they did. But no one's mind is going to be changed so I left it alone.

Let's look at it from LSU's perspective and not Alabama. You had to go in to your primary challenger's stadium and beat them. When you did that, it knocked them out of playing for your conference championship, because you earned the spot to be there.

So why does that team get to play you in a neutral location for one game for all the marbles? Why do they get that privilege? You already beat them on their home field, and now they get a second chance, and if they win that game that's the championship? Not only that, but by beating them and making it to your conference title game, you then had to beat another good team to maintain your throne, while they got to walk in to the national championship.

That's garbage.

I agree with your premise, but from the LSU perspective they beat Bama in a home game. Still shouldn't have had to play them again.

I thought LSU played Alabama on the road that season?

Anyway, my point I guess is that Alabama gets the benefit of an Alabama-centric view, that almost inevitably concludes with "Well, Alabama just has to be there."

No. They need to earn it too. LSU can make the case that Alabama didn't earn it.

The best two teams should play for the national championship. Sorry Oklahoma State. Don't lose to a shitty team next time.

Then the outcome of the first LSU Alabama game that season didn't matter. It was already decided that they were the two best. Losing to each other wouldn't have mattered so long as they beat everyone else.

That doesn't seem weird?

That scenario did a great job of blowing up the anti-playoff argument of how sacrosanct the regular season was. Alabama got a do over. In the end it helped get rid of the BCS, so a net positive.

The idea is to match up the two best teams in the country. The #1 team doesn't have the right to pick its opponent. Bama would have blown OkSt out of the building.

Didn't Nebraska enjoy the same benefit when they were in the same conference as Oklahoma State?

Nebraska lost to Colorado in 2002. The Buffaloes went on to beat Texas in the Big 12 CG and went to the Fiesta Bowl. Nebraska played in the National Championship.

We have no way of actually knowing that.
