The Wide Outs

An article from 24/7 that profiles our WR prospects. Paints a somewhat dim but accurate picture. There are some guys who had some big moments, but were actually statistically way more inconsistent and unproductive than it seemed to the eye. And they don't think the WR transfer is going to be the next Trishton Jackson by a long shot.

I didn't read it, but based on what you said, "ugh."

Regarding the transfer CJ Hayes, that’s not really what Bailey said. (The article is not behind a paywall.)

…but that experience counts for something when compared to the mostly green room he's joining.

However, for Hayes to take on a Trishton Jackson-like role that he's envisioning, he'll need to step up his game.

Thanks. I read it, and didn't quite take away anything that bleak

Catches on “contested targets.” Is this kind of information widely available for all WRs? I think it’s safe to say that in the last couple of years, the catch percentage of our WRs on contested targets overall has been very low. This is going to have to be a big area of concentration for Coach Johnson. There is no Mike Williams on the team who will go up and get it. Unless someone surprises, it will have to be a matter of incremental successes in this area if our passing game is going to take some steps forward.

We need another transfer WR, wayyy too many questions in this group

Yep. I could see 2 or 3 of our guys turn into dependable receivers this year, but after reading some of those advanced stats, I was practically distraught. Those guys simply did not successfully contest enough balls. Hell, some of them missed more blocks than they made catches.

There is no star in that group. We need a big time WR badly.
We also need 2 big bodies for DL. Nobody who looks like making the rotation on the DL is more than 280 pounds. That can't stand.

We have to have a couple big (300+) JUCOs in there for depth, and two because you know if it's only 1 guy, he will get worn down and there is no like for like replacement to plug up the interior run gaps.

And it appears that they are still looking at 1 or 2 interior OL, too. That's what we need. Most of the other areas are covered, although we lost some really good depth at LB.

contested catch stats are also some what subjective.. there are contested throws thrown in good spots to make a catch and others thrown in bad spots to make a catch.. there is only so much you can do as a WR to make up for poorly thrown balls or good coverage..

Fair point. I feel just a little bit better now ...

Jackson is serviceable. Queely is not especially dynamic. Cooper moves the needle a little.

But among Hatcher, Gadsden and Alford someone has got to emerge. The new coaches (OC, QB + WR) will see to that. I mean if any kind of talent is there the new coaches will manifest it, or at least scheme it to put them in a realistic position to be successful.
There's also a guy who lines up on the O-line that I think they can pass to. Maybe they discover him. The TEs in the NFL are all over the field and not just used for blocking.

I suspect the guy that will be lining up at TE currently plays a different position.

Dinos passing scheme in my opinion was a hot mess. It never made sense to me. It basically looked like sandlot ball. Qbs and WR were almost always out of synch.
I believe we have talent and now that we finally have solid offensive coaches i think we are going to be fine.
Just like the oline.
Coaching matters. Its why we only have one winning season out of the last six.

Good point

We already know about the pass game struggles. Inaccurate throws, protection, scheme, contested catches all contributed to a ineffective pass game. Bailey's analysis shouldnt be a surprise.

Yes it’s available for all receivers. But it’s not widely available as it’s part of the PFF subscription. Our WR ranked as such;

Pena
Jackson
Johnson
Cooper
Queeley
Alford

Peña has the highest percentage at 100% but he only had 2 contested balls. Jackson stands out as he was 9/11.

Completely agree. I’m wondering with Anae will actually have a written play book.

And he was supposed to be an offensive whiz who was going to give SU the numbers they had at Eastern Illinois.

Ill be shocked if he doesnt. He isnt going to run Dinos old O
I would ask if the last couple OC's evolved the system enough? Did they take out the elements that once made it successful? Pass pro was clearly a factor. I dont know what all the issues were but I dont think we should ignore that the passing game was our strength not too long ago and it created some of the best seasons SU ever had for Wr's.

One of them, anyway.

I think the O became Red and Rotten

Wow. Thats crazy about Jackson. I never would have guessed that. It honestly looked like every time he caught the ball he was wide open

Not to make this thread about the offense that we ran ...because the thread is not about that

But I believe Dino's offense really was operable until Gilbert came in. Dino's first 2 seasons he was playing top 10 schedules, the season after that he won 10 games.

When Lynch became coordinator he got that offense to start flowing ...it took him a little while but he got it to work. You could see that towards the end of Lynch's last season as coordinator, and the big win the last game of that season against WF.

This is why I was kind of surprised when Gilbert was brought in. Then the passing game took a nose dive into oblivion

Jackson also has the lowest drop %, graded the highest in running routes, had the best overall receiving rating, and most 1st downs. The one thing he wasn’t the best at was YAC. That was Peña. Jackson is a possession receiver.
