the Wisky tradion of jump around at the start of the

4th quarter is one of the best spirit things I have ever seen in college sports. I wish Syracuse
had something like that

The best college atmosphere I have ever been to was gameday in Madison. The Jump Around, the 5th Quarter after the game, lots of stuff during the game, a brat and a beer on the student union terrace on a beautiful lake with live music.

We have never had much in the way of traditions at SU and almost none that we didn't steal from another school. The "who's he?" cheer during hoops was started in the Manley Zoo during my time at SU. The standing before the first basket thing we stole from New Mexico if I'm not mistaken. The keys thing was stolen from Purdue.

A good start would be getting your student body to show up for the game.

Good thing Wisconsin doesn’t have the Amherst College president running the show
Did you see the blurb about Barry Alvarez where they showed what the stands looked like circa 1990? We just gotta win. Make it the place to be and people show up. Winning makes it cool.

We won a lot for 15 years. We didn't have anything like that.

SU fans don’t do traditions. How many times does this need to be said? Our fanbase shows up, and has a lot of positives, but we collectively hate anything that requires crowd participation. It’s a shame.

Went to the Florida home opener in The Swamp last night, and they always sing “I won’t back down” by Tom Petty in the timeout entering the 4th Quarter.

Everyone holding their phone lights up, night game, 86k singing along.. chills.

Unable to post the video here, but this is a screenshot from the video I took.

Yeah, but we never had anything like what we saw in Wisky yesterday. Noise yes. Spirit like that, No.
I get that. Look at the first comment of mine that you responded to. They went from an atmosphere and crowd that was worse than anything we've had to what they are now.

Did you see the blurb about Alvarez and what they showed the crowd being like in 1990?

Wisconsin football has really evolved since my time there, back when Fido was a pup. As a freshman, we lost every game and had lost every game the year before as well. When I was a sophomore, we beat Iowa and had a huge drunken parade to the Capitol. (We had a parade permit on file in case we ever won a game.) I remember riding on some guy’s shoulders. I also called my parents several times, chanting, “Ooh! Ungawa! We got that Badger powah!” My dad would say patiently, “Peggy, hang up the phone.” Long distance calls were 25 cents a minute back then.

We had the tradition of getting absolutely hammered at the games, since the team was so bad. The band played “On Wisconsin” when we got a first down. We also had the tradition of lifting a hapless student up up up towards the top of the stadium, where theoretically we were going to pitch them over. That was great fun. My then boyfriend/now husband smuggled a half barrel of beer into the stands. It was wearing a coat and hat.

My senior year we won several games. I drank less and watched the games, because I cared what happened. That was less “fun.”

I love watching what the team and that crowd has become! Apparently another tradition is for the crowd to sing, “Why do you build me up, buttercup.” Yes, I very much wish Syracuse crowds had more zip and traditions. I am unclear as to why we don’t.

Been to a lot of away games. The best ( in the stadium atmosphere) I have been in is a stadium that gets so loud that I can literally scream at the top of my lungs and not hear myself. Unfortunately this place doesn’t have any Wisconsin jump around, Florida Tom Petty, Va Tech Enter Sandman, type traditions and certainly they should be able to come up with one. That Stadium is somewhere around the central part of NYState. Forgot the name I don’t even think they know the name, something about an air conditioning company controversy.

I'm one of those SU fans that hates the traditions, at least as far as pre-planned choreographed pseudo performance art goes. That stuff might look good on TV, but it's not any fun to participate in. Sports are live and spontaneous, the cheering should be too. The few traditions SU has (standing and clapping at the start of basketball games etc) I mostly don't like and would prefer to get rid of.

All I want are the people who come to feel more free to cheer the way they want. Have a family/sit down section (could be a large hunk of the Dome.of that is what's needed) where people are expected to have manners. The rest of the Dome, if you want to stand and yell all game, go for it. If you want to bring a big drum and beat on it ... go for it so long as you buy the drum a seat. Make sure there are places where fans feel welcome to get a little crazy.

I agree , they should have a no standing and yelling section so I can avoid it. Let like minded fans sit together, but then they will have to have the standing just some of the time section , the lactose intolerant section, the vegan section, …..,…. and on and on.

There is a lot of truth to the statement that CUSE sports(football and basketball) need that Enter Sandman/Wisky jump type of event. That Wisky jump event was a release of so much pent up emotion. PEOPLE WERE ALLOWED TO REJOICE/let loose!!
You want 45,000 for football and 30,000 for bball games...
1) Get a show band
2) get more space for parking/tailgating
3) get that jump/entrance music tradition
Wildhack and Syverud, why would you sink hundreds of millions into an athletic facility only to have the same # of people show up? You've got about 25 home games/year. These should be events people, families and students plan around and NOT a trip to the dentist office.

I’m all about the tradition. It’s what separates much of College Football from the more corporate feel of the NFL Gameday experience.

There’s no reason Syracuse can’t have some iconic moments that the fan base gravitates around. This stuff truly does help make the fans feel closer and more connected to the program.

It doesn’t need to to be Enter Sandman, or Clemson’s “circling buses/run down the hill” entrance” or Wisky jump around. We don’t need a flaming arrow daggered into midfield. ….UF started the Tom Petty tradition in 2017, and now it’s something every fan looks forward to. As soon as the 3rd quarter ended, all 86k stood up and turned their phone lights on.

First things first.. we need to win. It’s hard to start any tradition with a half full stadium.
