I don't get why everyone is so confused about the coach standing up for the kid...

This was an ordered "hit" by the coaches. Zero doubt in my mind. Watch the clip in the other thread where the first kid that tackles Dungey blatantly twists his leg while he's on the ground knocked out. This video needs to be investigated. These coaches should be punished, IMO.

i didn't notice that ankle lock until seeing the posts about it today

there is no doubt this was premeditated

I'm disappointed our coaches did not go all Untouchables on their asses.

"You wanna know how to get CMU? They pull a knife, you pull a gun. They sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of theirs to the morgue. *That's* the *Syracuse* way! And that's how you get CMU. Now do you want to do that? Are you ready to do that? I'm offering you a deal. Do you want this deal?

If the player that gets targeted, Dungey in this case, has to be taken out of the game the opposing team's player of the same position should also have to sit until such time that the targeted player can come back into the game.
I like it. Would be way too controversial though.

Are there 8 officials on the field and were they from the MAC, ACC, or some other conference? At least they got the targeting call right, but if someone is actually injured or leaves the game as a result, any penalties should be increased, if the NCAA is not going to fine coaches/programs.

I know the refs miss some things - not sure if what is seen in this video from a Duke-Ga Tech got flagged:

Watching these clips just makes that hit look even worse. I mean what a POS and textbook cheap shot. I thought 44 should sit for as long ED's sits but now I think its worse than punch LaGarette Blount from Oregon did to that ahole Boise State player which caused Blount to be suspended 11 games in 2009. I think that kid should be done for the year no matter how long ED is out.

While we have no direct control over the NCAA as individuals, as a practical matter it seems like the good folks here could lobby the NCAA and ACC to have more officials on the field or better training for officials, players, and coaches about these potential head and neck injuries since they could be so serious. I understood that the new head of officials for the ACC is a Syracuse lawyer who served in a similar capacity for the old Big East so he may be more likely to listen to your concerns and recommend changes. A lot of injuries took place in the first several weeks of this season and that may have caught their attention too.

I too think he should be out for the year. But I don't believe that's enough of a punishment/deterrent to stop these cheap shots. That #44/CMU cheap shot dude is a 2nd string lineman. Him being out for the year is nothing compared to what we potentially lose w/ Dungey. Imagine if we lost Dungey for the year (or worse!). The punishment needs to be "an eye for an eye" IMO. Their starting QB (I.e., same position) should also have to sit out for as long as Dungey is out. If/when it impacts teams' in the W-L column (= $, recruiting) then it will become a focus and a deterrent.

Edit: I'd feel the same way if it was our guy doing the BS cheap shot. There should be levels of punishment based on the severity of the offense. The hit on Dungey - after he passed the ball away and was going to the turf w/ a tackler wrapped around his knees and ankles - is pretty much as bad as it gets IMO.

Nowhere near as bad as the ankle torque on ED. This one you can say is really just momentum. The CMU kid looked like he got possessed by Ken Shamrock ffs.

3rd rate schools. 3rd rate conference.

I think the Ga Tech fans will disagree that this is just [angular] momentum - it does appear that the Duke player lands flat on the ground - and then rolls over. I think the twist is on the leg of the GT QB. I know some people complain about GT's "cut blocking" but it is legal although some FSU fans would rather not play option teams for that very reason. Our DL got dinged up playing against the Citadel last year and later one of their players said their intent was to cause harm to our players so stuff like what happened to your QB apparently does happen on purpose - if so, this is coming from the coaching staff, as they set the standards, but no one would want to admit it for regulatory oversight if not outright legal reasons, except in such a case where the Citadel player let it slip out. Anyway, GT is hard to defend and has much better athletes than the service academies and 1-AA (FCS) teams running the option - Clemson plays them every year so they are better at it.

Yeah I don't disagree I'm just saying you could make an argument that it was momentum and that argument would be more credible than trying to make the same argument about the ED play.

yeah, that looks like they might be just doing the pete carroll roll tackle

Yeah, there is no doubt that stuff like that can "come from the top". When a coach immediately downplays an episode and the player has some "plausible deniability" (going too fast, didn't see the ball thrown, etc.) it becomes a purposefully nebulous situation. Now I know some on-field hits and fights, etc. are spontaneous but I think the attached clip is another exception - note that the UK players come to the UL side of the field pre-game and start trouble - an injured UK player seems to be the instigator - at one point he even jumps HC Petrino from the rear when Petrino is trying to separate the players! A UL fan better at lip-reading than me notes that Petrino tells the UK assistant coach "keep your players on your side of the field", "yes you can", "yes you can". Why would UK do this? To disrupt UL and maybe get some starters ejected is the thought of the UL folks.

Now if you are retired, unemployed, have extra time etc. I will leave two "entertaining" links about spontaneous on-field fights in two other ACC-SEC rivalry games (but don't want to add too much stuff here at an SU site otherwise):

A closing thought: as close as team members are to each other, I guess it's a miracle that some of the SU players didn't instigate an episode like these with that CMU guy that delivered that vicious hit to your QB. It could have gotten very ugly very quickly.

Think you're stepping way too far over the line in your assumptions.

I've played football and played with some coaches who were "dirty." While I'm certain there are coaches out there whom would condone their defensive players doing what #42 did, I can say I'm highly certain there isn't a coach in the NCAA which would condone what #44 did. In fact, I would be highly shocked if the CMU coach wasn't apologizing to Shafer in the post game handshake as it was very obvious he wanted to clear something up more than the usual "good game coach."

I agree with most of this. Wouldn't say it's "worse" than the punch LaGarbage Blount threw, but definitely on par. Either way, #44 should be suspended. There is a level of gamesmanship that is expected and thus acceptable. What #44 did was leaps and bounds over and above the acceptable level of gamesmanship. In the NFL, this kid is fined in the six figure range and likely suspended for at least 2 games.
