This season is an absolute disaster

I would rather watch competitive & high IQ kids than spoiled kids or headcases or 'talented' kids without grit.
You'd rather watch winning though, too.

Got an emailed great ticket deal midday on the morning JJ was injured -not yet public knowledge.
16 tix for $200, pick your game(s) -all games eligible.
Almost pulled the trigger, decided to think it over/talk to family. Glad I waited.
That deal doesn't look quite so wonderful now...
Reply with an offer of $100. SU would be crazy not to accept.

If I built a team, Moore would be the only guy I'd take on this team, Freeman maybe for the bench.

Freeman may not look like a pro right now, but did Chris McCullough after 9 games?

He should start next year with Choppa, Sadiq White, Anthony and I guess JJ as the starting PG. That would have him playing center early in games, or else bring White off the bench and start a true center.

Cuse-ND is two poor teams missing their best player (JJ and Burton). Will be interested to see how they look against a similar foe.

If push comes to shove we can always give 10-15 minutes of playing time to that walk-on with the red curly hair who looks like he's 11.
His nickname in the locker room is Ten Plus. Maybe it has to do with scoring prowess?

Not a terrific comp - Chris was drafted on potential, played 60 games over 4 years, and was out of the NBA by age 23

I’m gonna stir the pot. What if Autry and this roster are just mediocre this year like last year and not a disaster?

Yes we get blown out by good teams but so far in the Autry era he is yet to lose one of those true this is a ridiculously bad loss games.

2021 we lost to Colgate and Georgetown.
2022 we lost to Bryant and Colgate again.

Obviously a lot of close calls but not losses. Last year we only lost 4 games to teams that weren’t in the tournament. FSU, BC, GT being the worst of them.

It’s possible that this year even with all this terribleness we may not have actually lost to a team not making the tourney. So Far.

What will people think if this year is just more of the same? What if Autry just Beats who we should beat and keeps getting trucked by ranked or tourney teams and then splits games with the rest of the ACC.

Obviously he’s gotta go but that doesn’t feel like we’re a disaster or a dumpster fire that just feels like we’re still the middle rabble of the ACC and no where near where we expect to be.

Did anyone say Freeman isn't a pro or are you just pulling that out of the clouds?

The nepotism kid?

He's no Brandon Reese.

That's Vinny Lobdell's kid. Not sure why, but Vinny is a big deal in this town. An entrepreneur of some soft, but I'm not sure what his business (or family business) was/is.

Season was doomed to fail without a point guard.

They whiffed badly it appears on Carlos. So...

I also recall you being one of the largest advocates of hiring from outside the program, and rightfully so, for all the reasons you alluded to then, and, unfortunately, are playing out now. FWIW, I shared the same/similar sentiment. Talk about whiffing badly, ADJW couldn't have whiffed any worse on his first major hire as an AD.

This is the most concerning aspect for me. The staff brought in a bunch of guys who have proven they don't offer much on the defensive side of the ball. Then they bemoan the defensive play.

If the staff thought they could teach these players to be good defenders in a couple of months, they wildly overestimated their ability.
Ability takes a back seat to effort, effort is foremost.

This quote is from an NBA head coach whose defense had been the best the past two seasons.

"If you want to win and win in this league at the level that we hope to, you can't do it if you don't guard. And defense comes down to the effort you're willing to put in. The second effort, the third effort, the fourth effort that you're willing to put in. And right now, we don't have enough guys that are putting in the second, third and fourth effort."

Vinny is a great person and good friend. He owned Healthway brands and basically saved business during COVID with his air filters that businesses used to stay open. He owns about all of Pulaski and does a ton of charity work. He is a driving force in helping SU bball and is very very close with Melo. Let’s be nice to Vin lol

If given the choice, I would rather have it go down like this than limping into the tournament and farting out a close win to give the HC more time than he deserves.

Just to clarify, I was advocating doing proper due diligence to identify the best possible candidate.

I didn't like the idea of limiting our options by "keeping it in the family," because the three top candidates in that smaller pool were all undesirable:
  • Hopkins flopped at UW
  • Gerry had no head coaching experience
  • Red had no head coaching experience
Now that Red was the choice, I don't want to see him fail. Red is one of my all-time favorite SU players, so while I didn't want him to be the choice because I didn't think he had the best qualifications, and was concerned that he would just be an extension of the former HC, who had run the program into the ground with Red as the Associate HC -- I am 100% behind him now.

And I'm sad to see aspects of what I was concerned about vis a vis his coaching acumen becoming evident as problems in year 2. But there won't be any "told you so" sentiment from me -- I really, really, really want Red to succeed, and our program to get back to the level it belongs.

Cuse probably doesn't have enough money to get TJ Otzelberger or Shaka I would imagine.

Outside of Moore and the potential of Freeman there’s no other positives to speak of. Starling or not what we saw tonight was absolutely inexcusable. The defense we have seen under Red for the first 40 or so games of his tenure has been absolutely atrocious. You can lack talent, but there’s zero excuse to not compete defensively.
Yup! If we win 10 - 15 games this year I will be surprised.

So I sat behind a couple NBA scouts at both Barclays games and couldn't help but read their notes over their shoulders.

They thought that Donnie has very stiff hips, is generally rigid in his movement and something not positive about the shape/proportionality of his legs. The only thing that I remember well enough to post about the actual basketball that he played was negatives concerning physicality/contact. I just texted my cousin that was with me to see if he recalled what else they wrote.

Edit: He said that Donnie runs like he's hurt

Before I got to the second game my cousin asked one of the scouts what they thought about Donnie and his exact words were "Other people seem to think that he is a first round pick" and left it at that.

How about Carlos? Did any of them write down that he has the potential to be this generations Spud Webb?
