Thompson injured

High ankle sprain? Hope not...if we can avoid playing him until CMU (sparingly) then all in for LSU so much the better.

Marrone left Shafer with:

Micah Robinson (Jr)
Robert Welsh (Jr)
Donnie Simmons (So)
John Raymon (So)
Ron Thompson (RF)
Josh Manley (RF)
Jay Bromley (Sr)
Ryan Sloan (So)
Tyler Marona (So)
Zeke Johnson (Fr)

Bromley, Robinson, Welsh graduated.

Marona retired due to concussions

Manley, Sloan, and Johnson aren't here anymore.

Trevon Trejo, Wayne Williams, and Jalen Harvey have come and gone.

We still have Simmons, plus Slayton, Samuels, Giudice, Cross, Clark, Ealey, Sheppard, Pickard, and Carter up front. And eventually Raymon and Thompson.

We're young and inexperienced. After Game 1, they won't be inexperienced anymore.

MPB, and Walls too.

Looking at that, the Freshman and Sophomore is a solid nucleus. Unfortunately things didn't work out with Johnson. I was always high on him. What was left by Marrone isn't the problem. Just some plain old bad luck with injuries (Zeke, Marona, Coleman), a questionable kick off (Sloan), and for whatever reason a pretty talented Jalen Harvey didn't want to stick around.

The problem is we didn't bring anyone in with the 2014 class. I was questioning it then because it just didn't make sense? We ended up bringing in 2 guys late (Samuels/Harvey), but we should have targeted at least 1 or 2 other DT's. imo DT, and OL you can never have enough bodies, which is why I am always harping on roster management, and having 5 ST guys on scholarship, and a few other throw away scholarship guys. Those are 4 or 5 scholarships we just aren't in any position to give away.

SS has out recruited Marrone by any fair measure. Marrone won (what winning he did) with G-Rob's skill players.

Not even going to try to get into a debate on this, but take away the 4stars from each of the past classes, and has it really been by a wide margin? I just don't think our depth issues are Marrone's fault.

2015 - Blair
2014 - Edouard, KJ
2013 - Cooper

That’s not true, they didn’t need to bring in 3 or 4 DTs that year. We lost the first 4 guys after their recruitment. Had everything held when Samuels/Harvery were recruited the DT roster right now would be:

Sloan
Williams
Johnson
Coleman
Raymon
Slayton
Samuels
Harvey
Cross
Clark

Marrone wasnt a good recruiter that's not even debatable. That's well documented. As for Shafers recruiting it's to soon to know. As for the 2014 class they brought in exactly the number that were needed at the time. The staff couldn't have known they would lose the 4 players they did early.

There are 3 star's with big time offers and there are 3 stars with offers from CMU. We are getting the 3 star's with P 5 offers.

My Rant:
Injuries in the preseason are a regular occurrence not only at SU, but at all major universities. But do you know what sets us apart? A TOTAL LACK OF DEPTH!

And that is the shame of it all. We are in Year 3 of the HCSS experiment. DM left him with a full roster and a modestly strong recruiting base. But for all his talk about "recruiting the midwest", we are still looking at a lack of talent. Where are the players Scott? Where are the recruits?

As more time passes, I become less and less impressed with HCSS.

DM did not leave him with a full roster. And he deep sixed the 2013 recruiting class because of when and how he left.

Talked to HCSS. I'm afraid we're gonna need your ankle. Cut it off mid-shin and leave it in a cooler by your front door. We'll be by to pick it up in a few. The team thanks you in advance. #hardnosed
Anything for the cause

Though concerned I have not taken a leap off the bridge, yet. I am one who has said all along that we need to stay healthy on the defensive line, as well as the offensive line coming together and starting to spank the opponents.I would love to ask HCSS if these hold outs are extra precautionary due to it being early in camp and them already knowing themselves we have to be cautious in this area.
Other areas of concern are sweet and sour. HCSS talks about multiple interceptions by some of the safeties.. Does this mean they are that good or our QBs not making proper reads. It does indicate that we are throwing the ball down field however, !!!
PS Thank You to Trueblue25 for his commitment tot eh cause. Go CUSE!

Who said it's just an ankle? Lower body injury has a lot of possibilities:eat popcorn:

I think this is one of the real things holding us back. Yes every team goes through injuries

- but, we don't have the depth to deal with injuries
- So instead we play flag football instead of big boy 1s vs 1s football during practice-( I encourage people to look at practice videos from ND, USC, Florida, Bama etc
- Our players don't benefit from that competition like at big time schools
- As a result, we still get minor injuries and our kids haven't been truly tested

I don't know which is worse, losing our best players or overly protecting everyone so they don't get quality reps

Talents better now than then. Depth was an issue then too.

Foot on the gas, Lester. Foot. On. The. Gas.

It's not debatable, really? He wasn't, not, a good recruiter and that is just a fact. That is well documented if you include all the factors he was dealing with, especially his first years of recruiting.

I've said it numerous times. It's become revisionist history on here by some that he was a terrible recruiter. Who cares if he hated parts of recruiting, I'm sure most coaches hate putting in loads of hours on a player just to have them commit to some school who just swooped in. Doesn't mean he was a bad recruiter. Again, you can't read the comments by many parents, coaches, and players during his tenure and say he wasn't a good recruiter. Even players who didn't end up committing here had good things to say about Marrone. We were in the action on some very highly regarded recruits as well.

So no, it's not debatable. He did a decent job as a recruiter and maybe even better than a decent job. That's pretty well documented.

Shafer and staff have more to work with than Marrone did, between selling the ACC and the new facilities. So that has to be taken into account. Even with that factored in, this staff are stronger recruiters. If you hate recruiting that comes through to the kids in some way. Shafer and company get it, they love it(seemingly) and kids feed off of that energy. And Marrone did not leave Shafer with a full roster. He left him with little to nothing at QB and WR just to name two high profile positions.

If this guy is in a boot and crutches I can't possibly see how he's back in 2 weeks.

The hidden cost of this injury is that now Foy doesn't get to practice against someone of Thompson's speed and caliber

I saw him on the sidelines trying to shake that boot off like a dog getting his belly rubbed. I think he will be back soon enough. Precautionary I would assume. The team medical staff got much bigger in the off season so they would have more opinions on the best way to proceed.

If you have a "walking boot" on you don't need crutches.

It's called a walking boot for a reason.
