Ticket/Attendance Madness

One last point. My expectation is not for alumni to go to every game. It's more the alumni that go to none and haven't for years. Especially those 4-5 hours away. And also the football alum and their non involvement with the program over many years.
well maybe the football alumni would be around more if they didnt fire an extremely popular coach after winning the BE and going to a bowl game in the year he was about to be president of the college coaches association or whatever.

as an alumni who makes it to 1 game every few years, i dont see what else you could expect. non-local alumni are going to pick and choose games just like the cny yokels, except we are more likely to attend an away game closer to our homes and get our Syracuse fix that way. wasting a home game on labor day weekend is not going to get alumni, neither will more come for those fridays...those should be plum local games.

when you are in a 1 horse town and dont have a life in cny, it shouldnt be too hard to clear the schedule for at least 5 games a year.

You had me until the last sentence, pretty arrogant comment, those types of comments are what turn locals off especially when you admit you cant bother to get to a game more then once every few years.

Getting to a game and getting to a home game are two different things.

This ACC move will give a lot of alumni more access to games, with Boston / DC / Atlanta and the Triangle.

I dont disagree but no need to say people in CNY "have no life", there are a lot of things going on in upstate NY including Syracuse football.

For the record, there were a bunch of football alums at the MetLife game. Many familiar names from the late 90s, 00's. Trust me, there is still a connection there.

1. A "bunch"? What is that? We sold squadoosh for tix. Maybe they bought them from groupon.
2. The support is low which is why there is no football facility planned for now and the goal for Manley is not near where it has to be for it to complete.
3. If you saw another post right after the MetLife game, someone said they talked to some alums that were at the game, and they had NEVER been to a Dome game.

That may be very well true. But that says there was support for the coach, not the program. It is no different than a local not going because they changed the donation structure so that it doesn't value longevity, or changed the pricing structure radically, or were told to get a life or any number of reasons.

just trying to toughen up the locals.

clearly, they need some toughening up if spoken words and internet posts turn them off.

the big bad alumni and school officials hurt my feelings...waaaaahhhhhh.

Most students don't give a about the football program. Its just reality. Why are so many students at basketball games, even weeknights: WE WIN. Can we all just stop with these attendance: locals, alums, students threads?

A couple of notes. What is WIN? SU basketball was winning and the students srtill weren't showing up and had their seats moved. Unless you are saying we have to be top 5 like the past couple years. And when the football team won and the Dome did have 45K+, the students were still ripped because unless it was a big game like a Miami or VT, they either didn't show in big numbers or strolled in late and left early. I think your first sentence pretty much hit the nail on the head. Football needs to find a way, as JB and the basketball program did, to become the "in" thing to do on a Saturday (or Friday or Thursday :) )

So people who've never gone to a home game have now gone to a game and that's a bad thing? Isn't that part of the idea?

Just curious as to what people consider to be "good" student attendance? 10% of all undergrads? 20% 30% I don't think it is realistic to expect more than 20-25% tops, which translates to 2800 to 3500 in a best case scenario at SU. Now at Ohio State or Texas 25% is 12,000+ students, but or undergraduate population is significantly smaller and culturally more "urban" and diverse than what is found at those schools.

So what kind of numbers are we getting? (And, yes, I'm talking about early 2nd quarter peak attendance).

Thats fine but those locals you are referencing aren't on syracusefan.com and while a certain % of them likely do need some tough love telling them they have no life isn't going to result in any increase attendance especially when the person telling them doesnt go to games either.

Didn't say it was bad. But the number that show at the Dome is small and no different than locals not showing.

How about the alumni show some support at the Dome? Or do you need the game in your backyard to show support for YOUR school. Local fans are fans because of location, not because it is OUR alma mater. Hell, our tailgate has a couple alums who make it to most every game and they are 6-8 hours away. You should start a regular bus trip for NYC alum for each game. If each alum came to just one game, that would be great. Thanks!

It's a lot different.

Alumni basically fall into a couple of sets...young and single and city living somewhere w/out a car or not so young and married with kids and 5 to 7 hours away by car. It's far different that being within 50 miles of the Dome.

Kudos to them. Unfortunately that is not practical for the average joe. 15-20 years down the line I will still be rooting for Syracuse as hard as I do now. Depending on my living situation, who knows whether or not I'll be able to make a game each season (and yes, I am an alum). I also happen to be a local fan who attended Syracuse. I'm a hybrid.

The better argument would be the number of alumni because that one is weak. It may apply to you personally but it doesn't apply to all the alumni, especially those within driving distance.

The number of alum that are actual football fans and will watch the game on TV (not all alum even care about football just like not all locals care about football) is far greater than the number that actually shpw up at the Dome. Far far greater. How about every alum within a reasonable distance, that is a fan, go to 1 game a year?

Really? Seems far more practical than something Buzz Shaw (BUZZ SHAW!) said 10 years ago.

This isn't Penn State or Nebraska - a trip to the ole U in a winnebago isn't exactly a family vacation.

Are you gonna house everyone at Chez Bees? ;)

yep, i had seasons for 8 years after graduation, but life happens. now i will wait till the kids are old enough to handle 6hrs in the car in a day, and with the ACC ill back for 2-3 a year.

do as i say, not as i do bees.

as far as the bus goes, i got to blame the school for this, but then take some credit despite none being given. i tried for a few years in the early 00's, including on here, to get a bus to go games or to get an offical NYC Alumni Club. offered to run it, got contacts up at school, called, emailed...always fell on deaf ears.

all of sudden, BigAppleOrange forms and sends me an email to join for $25 and gives an offer for a bus to storz or something. no complaints, its a young mans job, but NYC is just getting on board with school events. as late as the 03 Melo run a NYC game gathering consisted of me, raoul, max, mad, frozen & nycfan picking a random bar to go to watch the game. now there are a few 'official' ones.

tease us with a few Giants Stadium games and then 1 year say no game, but we got 5 buses to go up and back for Fla St, when we are both ranked. lets see what happens then.

Don't kid us - you're waiting til they are old enough to drive you home.

Then the same must hold true to locals for the Metlife games every year, same thing right?

You're smarter than that to know Buzz's comment only impacted some and not all. We went from 45k to 25k.

And yes, the alumni support at the Dome sucks. So does the local and student support. But it seems like the alumni want to place full blame on the locals and that is a crock. SU may not have as many alumni as other big state schools, but they obviously have some alumni with deep pockets as they just raised $1B for the school. So tell me why nothing can be raised toward the football facility and it fell far short on the Manley upgrade?

We aren't ND in number of alumni nor prestige as a football program. But that place is crammed with alumni that come from all over. Must be some think ND has this huge following because the run down cities of South Bend/Terre Haut show up in droves.

they dont even have to be old enough, just gotta make sure their feet can reach the pedals.

Sure. Difference being NYC is right there and there's a tad more do to.

Frankly I hate the Meadowlands and think the whole experience there boarders on a FedEx Field level of needless aggrevation. If SU wants to play in NY they should pick the baseball stadiums if able where capacity and access is more reasonable.
