Tim Lester's Comments

I'd love to find a guy like Fridge. Someone who was a successful OC. So good that it landed him a HC job. But maybe it didn't work out as HC so he has to go back to what he was great at.

That doesn't mean any single (or double sized) human rowing in that boat is acceptable. I don't want Charlie Weis taking the role. We'd never be able to get up in to that coaching booth.
I'm not sure Fridge would be able to fit into our coaches box. Although the walk up would probably help him shed some pounds. I can just see cutaways where our other coaches faces are smashed up against the windows, while Fridge is squeezed in the middle.

From what I understand, IF Lester is the guy next year, he did run his offenses out of the gun.

Also, Acosta ran a pretty high octane offense didn't he? Is Acosta the guy who's friends with the UCLA coach? They may make a good tag team.

I'd like to look into and discuss Lester's past history of O.
That was GM with the N-Zone.

I actually think this is all a blessing in disguise. Lester played professional football (granted it was the xfl). That means he can process things quickly and read defenses well. That has to translate to playcalling at least somewhat and being able to determine trends in what the defense is showing and what becomes exploitable. We really can't be any worse so I'm excited to see what happens. Let it all hang out against the Niles and maybe, just maybe, it's a semi close game late in the 2nd half.

He'd be running AAM and Morris out of the I with Long as the QB, a couple of options, a heavy dose of counters and traps, playing with Moore and Parris, and throwing Play Action Posts to Ishmael.

What would wrong with that?
Well for one it wouldn't take advantage of the one unique thing our program has that no other P5 school has.

But hey, we've scuffled along just fine ignoring our pristine weather controlled advantages, and I think having a competent offense once every 10 years sounds fantastic. Why change anything from what we were doing in the 90s?

N-Zone is an offensive system developed by UCLA OC Noel Malzone. It is sold in two parts - part 1 offense between the 20's and part 2 - offense in the red zone. We bought part 1.
I snorted a little there good job

Hopefully, Lester or his successor will take advantage of the Dome. If we have fast players, a QB that can pass and we can score more than 30 PPG, I don't care what system they run.

I may be all wet on this, but I question whether our OL is suited for a spread offense.

He said he is used to calling plays without looking at playbook, but might have to use it a little this weekend because it is not his verbiage. He said his system is simpler.

Not buying that statement.

Ah, you're just frustrated.

Lester on the radio sounds like a he wants to move away from spread eventually but can't really do it right now with current roster. Wants to focus more on running the ball and controlling the line of scrimmage. Willing to run the ball or pass the 71 times depending on what defense gives him and how O Line can handle it.

Why can't he do it with this roster? Does he think the OL is that bad or does he really need a blocking TE? I thought the roster wasn't ready for a spread offense? I'm confused- what exactly should SU be running for an offense then?

I think it has to do that he can't implement his offense in the middle of the season and in one week. He is running the plays that we're implemented under McDonald.

Explains why the Browns are so much better.

:)

Best offensive line in the NFL as per Pro Football Focus. Tate, Crowell, and West all are producing and Hoyer is getting time.

He said it on axe's show today as well. He said his offense has same plays, but they are called different things. He even screwed up Gator/Smash as he was taking to Brent. Apparently they mean the same thing in the different offenses. Said he would see the game and the plays would flow without only having to look at Play sheet once or twice per game.

It's a scrimmage.

Got to prep for the second half of the season.
