Tired of All the Red Bashing...

Imagining our team should be better than it is is a common practice for fans and I get that and part of that equation is coaching. I get that and agree that it should be an important aspect of the discussion.
For me, I am looking for improvement throught the season.

That’s what I am seeing this season and , for me, it’s way too early to be calling for a coaching replacement! Let’s cut Coach Autry and staff a break!

People can’t criticize the coach when the team is one of the worst HM teams currently?

Well, it's put up or shut time, these next few games.

We will be underdogs against Georgetown and Maryland, most likely.

We have to win at least one, and ideally both.

Of course we should beat Bucknell, who are 4-7.

Wake is 8-3, but has lost to anybody they played who's any good.

Similarly, Florida State is next, but they have lost to the good teams they've played.

Then, it's Georgia Tech and Boston College, both of whom are terrible.

We need to win 5 out of 7 of these games between now and January 7th. This is probably our easiest remaining stretch of the season.
Agreed. Fortunately the easier part of the schedule is coming when Starling is out. Still, I wish we had him for this stretch to try and get some momentum.

There was a year, I think it was 1998-99. Etan Thomas got hurt early in the season, and all these other guys had to step up in terms of rebounding and defense. It was during this stretch, as I recall, that Ryan Blackwell really emerged as a leader on the team. And then when Etan came back, we were a much better team because other guys had to take on new responsibilities in his absence.

The following year they were one of my most underrated SU teams. They lost to Michigan State in the Sweet 16 after leading by around 15 points. If I'm remembering correctly that was the Mateen Cleeves team who wound up winning the championship for Izzo that year. We were playing at that kind of level. That team could have won it. Kind of like how we lost to eventual champion Arkansas in '95 when Moten called the phantom time out.

If we get wrecked by the hoyas today the red bashing will be increased by 10-fold so prepare yourselves. Hopefully we crush them but seeing as how we have not beaten a single good team yet this year I am not at all optimistic

Sadly I don't think it was a phantom time out if my memory serves me correctly. I think it was a brain fart lol

I was being kind, since he's a legend. He called a timeout we didn't have to save the ball from going out of bounds. And to think that some people accused him of throwing the game afterwards. Just shameful. Moten is the one, along with John Wallace, who got us through the first probation.

My frosh year. Eric Williams was originally plying before Damone eventually took over his spot.

Won Maui.

Lost to stupid Okie St in the 8/9 with Gottlieb.

That next year we were awesome. Should have beat MSU.

If KMart never gets hurt, Cincy prob walks to the chip with that team they had, but we would have been the best equipped to beat them.

I loved Red as a player, By all accounts he is a great guy. But it is apparent he is not a good coach. Can’t beat a bad Georgetown team at home with a +18 FTA advantage.

The sooner he is gone the better, I’m scared to think how much damage another year of this will do.

and once again not getting Lampkin out of the game a lot earlier was the downfall of this game. Syracuse should demand his helecat and money back. Dude can't play any D.

I’m sure Autry is a nice guy but that doesn’t make him a good coach. He is in over his head and I don’t see us winning any more games this season.

Red fixes one mistake (sticking with a lineup that’s working and not automatically subbing in guys) but then makes new ones. Even though that long 2nd lineup worked to increase defensive intensity and start the comeback and grab us the lead, you do have to eventually sub in one or two players. When we stagnated 2 times in a row on offense with a six point lead, it was time to put Freeman back in. Davis was playing well, but Freeman could have come in for Taylor or even Lampkin. I get that Freeman is a poor defender but he’s possibly our best scorer and one of our best rebounders. You gotta put him back in as soon as the offense started to stagnate after the run. Red hesitates too much. Also, how about calling a time out and making sure the guys are running set plays on those possessions to isolate Lampkin or Davis on the block or wing?
Some other issues:
1.) Red looks frustrated on the sidelines. At the end of the game, you need to project energy and confidence to your team. He’s not doing that. How did he not learn this lesson from JB? Every Cuse fan understood that about JB and that it worked. JB would yell at guys for mistakes but then would quickly refocus them onto the next possession and project calm and confidence.
2.) Red’s still figuring out substitutions and lineups that will work and doesn’t always seem to have a feel for what works.
3.) He does seem to be making some adjustments. Finally starting Choppa, which everyone had been calling for after the Cornell and Tennessee games.
4.) another JB philosophy: Sometimes you do have to give up defensive lineup advantages for offense. Taylor is our best defender and he needs to play. But he gives us very little on offense right now. When we stagnated a few possessions in a row, he needed to take Taylor out of the game and put in Donnie to give us an offensive spark.
5.) I get that Bell is struggling with his shot. But why are we not running more actions, flare screens and back screens, to get this guy open looks?! It’s mystifying.
