Tommy

IIRC, that was a Saturday night game at UNC, and McNabb wasn't officially named the starter until shortly before kickoff. I'd say that things worked out pretty well for Downing and Kevin Johnson as well...

Yes. I was at that game. McNabb was impressive for a freshman, for sure. But it’s not like he was the spectacular McNabb who could put the whole offense on his back, at that point. He played a smart, efficient game and looked really quick and athletic.

There were some drops and the screens made his numbers look a lot better than they ultimately were. Just one game, but this team's season will hinge on his play and development. I can look past the underthrow which got picked. Liberty DB was bigger than the receiver. Can't get over the forced pass into the end zone. Those are mistakes he'll learn to not make.

Liberty also knew the scheme and plays due to the tape they had of the offense. We'll see if Maryland employs the same strategy.

How does it make them “look better then they are?” Stats are stats. Screens are apart of the gameplan and if he did good on them it averages out his whole play

a legit concern about DeVito to me is all he has shown in the past is an ability to throw the deep ball. would like to see a sustained drive. this game is definitively a concern and not what i wanted to see. that being said, its just one game and his first one at that. but i don't recall dungey ever having a game that uninspiring.
You must have missed the Miami and MTSU games his junior year.

Quite easily. Take away those three passes and his game was worse than it was. He missed receivers and wasn't in sync with his corps at any point of the game. I know his father posts here, but we can be honest too.

Lol his father posting here has no bearing on my posts. You can’t just take passes away and say “oh his game would be worse” if that’s true then if you pull the two picks out then his game was a lot better. You game is the sum of all stats, not ones picked and chosen

Yes it is. It's ok to admit it. He played a terrible game overall and those plays made his line much gaudier than they were. He also almost threw a pick six that would have given him three interceptions. Same thing applies for Buckshot. If not for that long pass play, his stats are on par with Devito's in terms of total yardage. We pick and choose stats all of the time and it's not relegated to sports.

Ah cool thanks for assuming that his father being here makes me want to defend tommy to make him feel better or something. You can pick and choose if you want but you don’t get the full story. The fact is that those plays are apart of our core gameplan and that he was able to complete them. That means while there were bad parts (of which there were) the overall play was C- imo

To analogize this in another context, a guy could break a 99 yd run and then get shut out on 30 more carries. It is not illogical or unreasonable to say that the one carry inflated the stats and may not reflect the game most accurately.

You guys are splitting hairs a bit though. Tommy struggled yesterday against an inferior opponent. But we won and he gets to do better next week.

Y'all did it with the kid who was medically disqualified and believed everything his camp said. It's not a wild presumption.

In regards to “being on the same page”, don’t we run a lot of option routes?... where routes are dependent upon how the defense lines up?

Or am I just making that up?

If so, that can definitely explain some of the timing/miscommunications.

My biggest worry was the fact he was drifting in the pocket and throwing off his back foot... ALOT. Also, many of the sideline passes weren’t even catchable unless we have 8 foot WRs with condor wingspans.

The one interception is whatever. Stupid playcall and ended up being a punt. The second one was horrific and probably was the result of Tommy pressing.

Hopefully we can get him some rhythm throws early on at Maryland. It didn’t seem like we tried any of that last night. Every play was a deep route/long out or screen.

Ya the lack of accuracy was my biggest concern, I mean a good portion of those passes were no where close to the WR and thats putting it mildly. He also had that one pass right to a Liberty defender where the guy dropped what might have been a pick 6. Certainly not going to panic as clearly he had 1st start jitters but it's a bit disconcerting we didnt settle down and get something going through the air in the second half. Other issue I had was how were our 3rd 4th and 5th WRs not getting open? Guys like Nykiem Taj etc should have had big mismatches was really surprised we didnt have some guys running open especially from the slot.

Tommy DeVito had a bad game. We as a fan base were all looking forward to seeing him have a good game and it did not turn out that way. The most important thing is that Syracuse University Football came out of that game with a win. It's a team sport and the defense did it's part to ensure the win. All the things that went wrong with his performance will be reviewed, discussed, and practiced on to correct. Yes, some of you are skeptical right now of his ability to turn it around and last nights performance gives you the ammunition to have those doubts. The one most important person who most likely does not have doubts is Coach Dino Babers. He has seen enough football in his life to know exactly what to do to show Tommy DeVito how to be a very successful starting quarterback. That being said it is incumbent upon Tommy DeVito to vastly improve his play this coming Saturday against Maryland. In my humble opinion, I think he will. He has too, his team depends on him to play consistently well for them to have a successful season. I think Tommy DeVito knows that also and will do what he needs to do to help his team win. Game two coming up, Go Orange, beat the Terps!!!!!!!!!!!

McNabb was solid and efficient in that first game, but I wouldn’t say “great”. He didn’t throw for many yards, or even throw much at all if I recall.

I've been looking for a box score online and haven't found one yet. But he made a crazy run for a touchdown where he dodged 2 or 3 tacklers inside the 10 yard line. Let me see what I can find.

Really surprised about Nykeim, wonder if he is still not at full speed after knee surgery. Don't think we have a lot of blazing wr burners to blow the top off opposing Ds...

What kid?

I wonder if we will see some more guys get a shot especially outside wrs. The kid from Canada just got here but we need someone whose tall and has some weight on him.

One thing I noticed was Tommy took a rug burn type scrape on his right elbow early on. Not sure how much this affected his throwing, seems like that's the type of pain you just forget about while playing, but you never know. It looks like one of those that doesn't bother you while your amped up but hurts like a mother the next day. Hope he can practice OK with that, and it heals quickly.

I can't remember a season opener that I was happy with. Big game for opponents and away doesn't help either.
I will admit that I am a Tommy fanatic and am disappointed for the kid, but very confident this will do nothing more than spur him on. Just like Dungey he's a competitor, just a different style.

I’m not inside Tommy’s head so I say this only as an observation. But I think he may have been too hyped up. He had a few early short passes where people felt the WR dropped a ball but I felt Tommy threw a few of those 6,7,8 yard passes with far too much mustard. Kind of like Nassib did warlybin his career. Not everything has to be a 100mph fastball. Then his longer passes, especially to the sidelines were all 5 yards too high and overthrown. Sometimes out of bounds. Could have been all mechanics too with the tip of the ball up. But he just seemed to play with the volume too high.

I’m not worried.

What’s up with posts telling me how I should or shouldn’t think?
Yeah. I'm wondering why people saying we can't being judge TD's performance after 1 game. Why? I judge every player after every game. It's kind of the point of the forum. I get not projecting his season after 1 game, but feel free to judge every single play.
I'm guessing if he was 30-35 for 400 yards and 4 td's nobody would have a problem with judging his performance.

i really think late reads because of unsure progressions messed with his timing.

So many pessimistic takes from last night. The passing game wasn't
As many have opined, Tommy's performance was nothing to write home about. If I had one concern that is larger than "just a bad game" or it was his "first start" is what Dino stated in the presser afterwards...that "Tommy is a gunslinger." Being a gunslinger is not only a physical attribute, but it's built/borne into one's mindset. Being patient and "taking what the defense gives you" is something a gunslinger has a lot of difficulty dealing with/adjusting to. If Liberty schemes can fluster/challenge him (patience, mentally, etc.) so much, what will other P5 schools be able to do in that regard with much better personnel? Time will tell I guess...I hope TD has the mental capacity to adjust moving forward.
If only we had some way of knowing that he might have the tools and mindset to be a decent QB. Oh wait, that's right, he played some last year. Mixed results, to be sure, but he looked pretty good in a couple. For example, if Dino didn't replace ED with TD against UNC, we lose that game. He looked fine against FSU (I know, might as well have been Rutgers, lol). Let's slow down with all the negativity and hold off on writing off the next 3 seasons until at least next Saturday, can we?

I don't get the "take away those plays" stuff. Why would we take them away? Why not say, "If you take those 2 int's away, he didn't throw a pick the whole game."?
Those plays happened. Someone earlier mentioned if you take away Moe's 42 yard run, he only had 42 yards on 13 carries. Why are we taking his run away?
If my aunt had balls, she'd be my uncle.
