Yeah. I'm wondering why people saying we can't being judge TD's performance after 1 game. Why? I judge every player after every game. It's kind of the point of the forum. I get not projecting his season after 1 game, but feel free to judge every single play.
I'm guessing if he was 30-35 for 400 yards and 4 td's nobody would have a problem with judging his performance.
Judging the performance is fine. Judging the player is stupid. Good players have bad games and bad players have good games. For example, Tom Brady did not look remotely like the GOAT against SU in 1998 and Andrew Robinson looked like a Heisman candidate a couple of times.

Yes it is. It's ok to admit it. He played a terrible game overall and those plays made his line much gaudier than they were. He also almost threw a pick six that would have given him three interceptions. Same thing applies for Buckshot. If not for that long pass play, his stats are on par with Devito's in terms of total yardage. We pick and choose stats all of the time and it's not relegated to sports.
Does it really matter? His numbers sucked. If you take those screens away, his numbers still sucked.

You're right. He went 10-16 for 120 yards. Not sure what he ran for but I found that info.

I went to that game...woof 23 years ago. I completely recall not knowing who was going to be the starter walking into the game. Rumor started buzzing that it was DM, but all the information you would get then was from the newspaper, radio, and TV. Anyways I remember leaving thinking I wonder if he can be accurate enough to be good, but when he was in the open field you knew how special he could be. Even though DM was 10-16, if my recollection is on point many of the completions were very short, screen type passes. Another thing I recall is how beautiful the campus was, who knew some of them were taking fake classes.

As I viewed the Syracuse game from the Beer Garden last evening I couldn't help but get worked up as the offense failed to produce, and it was only amplified with each beer I downed. But now that I've been able to sleep on it, as well as re-watch on YouTube, I think there is very little here people should be concerned about.

Yes, I'm aware DeVito's stat line wasn't good and what not, but people have to remember that if it wasn't for him last year we definitely don't beat UNC and there's a strong possibility we lose to FSU. The kid had a poor game, sour grapes. He'll learn from it. They were a dome team playing in a hostile environment on the road during the late evening. Also, with WR's missing reps in camp due to injury, I'm sure another week of preparation will be very beneficial. People seem to be forgetting Dungey's stat lines from these games:

2017 against Mid Tennessee: 26-42, 180 yds, 0 tds 1 pick

2018 against Florida State: 7-15, 75 yds, 0 tds 0 int

2018 against Pitt: 18-38, 195 yds, 1 td 2 int

Looking forward to Tommy passing for 300 yds and 3 tds against Maryland next week. Book it.

I wouldn't say that. Check out VirginiaOrange's takes in the game thread.
Anyone who actually opens and follows the game thread during the game must enjoy pain and suffering. I don't bother because I know the knee jerk foolishness being said during the heat of the game will be brutal.

Yeah, the lack of game film on Liberty did smack of being a contrived excuse. But that's where many are. They are trying to bridge the gap between what we saw last season in games and the dismal performance yesterday.

How much of that was TD's fault and how much of it was the receiver's, I couldn't say. The idea that this was just a "timing thing" that can be easily straightened out seems suspect to me. They throw a whole lot of balls in practice.

I'd like to have the confidence that others have that this was just a bad game and that we'll see the TD many expected to see shortly. But, last night 's passing game was so bad, it's understandable that many fans are reassessing just how good TD is going to be and how successful a season SU will, have.

Listen to Dino’s presser. He doesn’t BS. He said they’d prepared for one D and they came out and did the opposite. Stopped everything deep, made us dink and dunk. He said if was 50% that and 50% first start jitters and timing issues.

There’s no worry here. He’ll be fine - I’d put money on that being his worst game of the season.

when you make so many throws on late decisions you will make bad throws.. as the reads get better throwing will too
First interception was a late throw and was underthrown... that's the only reason it was picked instead of being a long touchdown. Being underthrown allowed the DB to catch up and make the play.

I didn’t even mind that - it was on 4th down, and effectively an “arm punt”.
A wiser DB would have simply knocked it down, and they’d have the ball closer to midfield, rather than at the 20.

The 2nd one was unconscionable.
You can’t try a BS sidearm pass and risk exactly what happened.
No doubt Dino will use that as a teaching moment.

He needed to throw that into the cheap seats, and send Andre out there for 3.

He’s a sharp kid - he will learn from all of this, and be better for it.

I'm confused.

In the first paragraph you indicate that the woes of the passing game were associated with an unanticipated defense.

In the second you seem to indicate that Tommy had a bad individual game ("his worst of the season")

Many of the problems I saw in the passing game were associated with execution on the part of the QB and the WR (individually or both).

We'll see how much progress in made by next Saturday. We won't get past MD with the passing offense we saw against Liberty.

I don’t want to start a separate thread just to ask this question, but did anyone go watch the game at the state fair?

I was in the expo center 15 minutes before kickoff and they were streaming a fight on ESPN+ and it seemed fine. Lots of people in the stands wearing orange.

No need to be confused. Re-read the 2nd half of the first paragraph. Also, it’s no what I said - that was from Dino’s postgame. Listen to that - after 3 years, I can say the guy is usually telling the truth and is pretty honest about things like this.

Execution and timing issues can come from jitters, late decision making, and also from not having video on a D and adjusting on the fly. They all compound, too.

The passing game will be much improved this week.

I’m not inside Tommy’s head so I say this only as an observation. But I think he may have been too hyped up. He had a few early short passes where people felt the WR dropped a ball but I felt Tommy threw a few of those 6,7,8 yard passes with far too much mustard. Kind of like Nassib did warlybin his career. Not everything has to be a 100mph fastball. Then his longer passes, especially to the sidelines were all 5 yards too high and overthrown. Sometimes out of bounds. Could have been all mechanics too with the tip of the ball up. But he just seemed to play with the volume too high.

I’m not worried.
How good is our QB coach?

My response is maybe it will. It would be pretty difficult to be any worse than it was versus Liberty. And Maryland will have better athletes than the Flames.

So this young Twitter feed looking like it may be worth an early follow... even if it is half as good as Andrew Luck’s...

Exactly what I said when watching the game. After a long pass went long and out if bounds it was Nassib deja vu.
The 1st interception was just a bad throw while the second was a bad decision.
His strength is his accuracy and he was way off - he threw behind and over reicevers - not like him.
He is likely to have a few like this game this year and likely to be criticized just as Ryan was early in his career. (Interesting how Nassib got better as the oline got better.)

At the end if the day, Tommy will take us bowling and grow before our eyes.

he needs time. he needs to stop trying so hard to be the chosen one.he needs to relax,if possible, and trust his skills. we need to curb our expectations, somewhat. he needs to trust the oline. i need to shut up!!! i like the kid, it may take awhile.

i wish this kinda of stuff was not public if it is real. any chance this gets taken down???

I appreciate you putting this on here in case some want to follow, but let's face it, that handle/concept is derivative, lame, and doesn't really make sense.

Edit: Sorry, didn't realize there was an entire thread devoted to the topic.

I like the fact that TD can throw screen passes as that was something Ryan really struggled with.

Liberty hit him early and that seemed to set a bit of a tone in his mind. This in my opinion is something TD has to work on, not letting an early rush/pressure get in his head for the rest of the game. It's hard to do, but I'm sure he'll adjust. This is on the OL and WR's as well and you are absolutley right about Nassib getting better once the line was improved.

I did. Wasn’t terrible. They had it on at the Expo center and the Beer garden.

Quite the limb you’re on ... “maybe it will”

That was my whole point. Dino is not worried, Tommy is not worried, why should we worry?

Maryland’s D is on tape. They know what to prepare for.
