Top 5 of the Last 50: Wide Receivers

Nothing against Ish, but there’s gotta be a better 5th WR.

Ismail?
Shelby Hill?
Tommy Kane?
David Tyree?

Ok - so I just checked the stats -
Ish is the career leader in receiving yards at Cuse.
I…. did not know that.
I just listened to their conversation. It was pretty interesting. The fifth spot came down to Scott Schwedes, Ishmael, Quinton Spotwood and Alec Lemon. Shelby Hill also got consideration. They mentioned Atta Emba Tawo and his spectacular single season but didn’t put him on the list because it was only 1 year. They went with Ish because he’s the career leader in receiving yards.

And a 3rd Team AP All-American. We haven't produced many guys who have earned those kind of honors.

Alright I’ll say it. The late great Mike Williams should be in the top 5. Only played three years but would have been all-time yards leader and let’s just say he didn’t have the best QBs lining up to throw to him.

Big fan of KJ but from an impact standpoint I think special teams first not WR at Cuse. Him and Spotwood are neck and neck in my mind for their WR careers at Cuse.

KJ averaged 19 yards a catch as a junior, caught 64 balls as a senior, and was a 2nd round draft pick. I think he was actually more accomplished as a receiver than a special teamer. It just took him a little longer to get there because of the position change. I can see putting others in front of him though.

Id personally go with Alec Lemon at #5 but that's just my opinion
Both had great senior years and I feel underrated for what they did for the program.
Ish gets a step above, in my book, for the better senior year as he was 2nd in Rec and 3rd in Yards plus being tied or ahead of Lemon in all WR categories helps put him above.

We've not had a great history of "legendary" WRs but still getting down to Top 5 is pretty hard.

How much weight do you put on our 1 year guys like Amba or Meeks? You could even toss in Erv Phillips as he is career leader in receptions and single game. Do you take into account Scott Schwedes playing on run heavy teams.
You can go on and on with various factors. These lists are fun but can be maddening lol.

You certainly can't solely look at numbers when trying to figure these things out. Imagine Harrison, Monk, or Moore with the current offenses.

Art Monk:
Monk holds the Syracuse record for the most receptions in a single game, with 14 catches against Navy in 1977. He also holds the school record for receiving yards per game with 47 yards per game. Monk led the team in receiving for three consecutive seasons (1977-1979).

I think he just caught another TD versus Missouri

One of my favorite Syracuse football memories is leaving the stadium at Mizzou and listening to the fan in front of me complaining to his friend - “#15! He was going to throw it to #15! I knew it, you knew it…hell, even my wife knew it! How do you not cover #15?!?!?! How?!?!?!?!”

Man that was an awesome game to be at.

I hate to admit it - but about the only thing I remember about Quinton Spotwood was him being injured, rrlbees “reporting” that on the old AOL boards - and the crapstorm that ensued.

But I’d put him at #5 just based on that story alone 😜

He was a menace on punt returns … so sad injuries derailed a very promising career.

1997 Quinton Spotwood, as a true sophomore 41 catches 797 yards 8 touchdowns 31 punt returns 463 yards 14.9 average 4(!!!!!) punt return touchdowns. I'm not going to do the work, but you would be hard pressed to find a better sophomore year (Mike Williams 60-837-10 was also great)

He was explosive and dynamic and it's a damned shame that he wasn't the same after the injury.

I also remember how good our blocking on those punt returns were back then. Same with our kick returns. Just think, we had KJ open the year with the kickoff for a TD and then Spotwood with the punt returns. That '97 team was the best all around of the McNabb era.

I remember him making an incredible catch against NC State that setup the infamous fumble by Dee Brown at the 1.

Was that the one where the db had perfect coverage and he dove over him for the catch?
