Class of 2016 Transfer Thread

I don't think Duke needed to open up a spot for Bolden by telling Thornton to get lost. Duke was playing with 7 scholarship players for most of the season, and they lose Plumlee while bringing in 5 freshmen.

Seniors: Jefferson, Jones
Juniors: Allen
Sophomores: Kennard, Jeter, Vrankovic
Plus 5 freshmen
Makes 11 scholarships as it stands today
I thought so too, but our good buddy Jerry Meyer made it seem like they pushed Thornton out and asked David Robinsons son to pay his own way. Interesting.

Here's the article: http://2 47sports.com/Bolt/Thornton-one-and-done-at-Duke-44736619

Speaking of transfers, following the two transfers, I think it's a great opportunity to go after a traditional transfer or two.

Not really JB's thing (obviously), but it would definitely help balance the classes (w/ only 2 SRs and ZERO JRs next year). Add the possibility of 3 early entries in the next 14 mos, and things are going to get really skewed towards youth/inexperience.

Our boy Goodluck, decided to turn pro and hire an agent. Can't see him being drafted and will more likely become somebody's D-League pet project.
Pity. No way to fix that kind of thinking. Hopefully, our other prospects will come through. I like the (new) direction the staff is going.

Duke 5 stars transferring because they were recruited over by more 5 stars. We beat them in Durham and are sweating over a 3 star. What a world.

What three star are we sweating over?

The more time that passes, the less likely it appears we'll be adding a grad transfer guard.. Reinhardt off the board, Mullins not looking likely, Avery Woodson visiting other schools w/no SU interest apparently. There aren't a TON of guards that would be a fit here, so the options are quickly dwindling. UW Milwaukee's Akeem Springs seems to be heading elsewhere, as well. Unless we pull a kid out of nowhere, simply as an emergency option, we better hope Malachi is returning. Otherwise, we have no perimeter threats outside of Lydon and no guard depth at all. The only other possibility that I could pull was a kid named Emile Blackman from Niagara. 6'4", nephew of Mark Jackson that struggled behind the arc this past year, but shot 38% the year before and 56% at LIU Post in his previous college stop. Brooklyn/Long Island kid. I know we've talked about the staff having a plan, and hopefully they know Malachi's plans, but right now, I am starting to get real worried about our backcourt and depth for next year.

Any HS Srs we could still be involved with?

Thompson/Dembele might not be as important as another guard, at least for 16-17...

Yeah, with three open, Syracuse seems poised to add one. Hopefully, they surprise me, but right now the hive ain't exactly buzzing.

I think a JUCO player wouldn't be the worst thing, either. Have not heard any that we are interested in but with nobody currently in the junior class, it would even things out a little bit.

This is the scenario I would like to see play out - doubt it will but it would certainly help stabilize the roster for future years (especially with as many as 5 players leaving after '16-17).

Center
Coleman - Redshirt Senior
Chukwu - Redshirt Sophomore
Dembele - Freshman

Forward
Roberson - Senior
Lydon - Sophomore
Moyer - Freshman
TRADITIONAL TRANSFER (?)

Guard
Richardson - Sophomore
Howard - Sophomore
Battle - Freshman
GRADUATE OR JUCO TRANSFER (?)

Richardson and possibly Battle could also play forward if we want to go three guards, while Lydon can also play center of course. This roster would allow much more flexibility than this past year's and has a chance to be really good. Just need to find the missing pieces. The longer it goes, as a poster said above, the more worried I get. But as long as Richardson returns, I think we will be fine for next year regardless of if we add anyone or not.

Not really surprised. He got less and less time while Matt Jones etc got more and supposedly daddy Thornton didn't hide his displeasure with Coach K. Thornton was talked into reclassifying to leave early last year when Tyus Jones left early. His dad wanted him to stay in HS or be redshirted believing he wasn't ready but Coach K told them he was going to be a key player. These early departures screw up more programs than us and even end up hurting other kids in the program.
Pretty messed up what K did he. No one seems to be talking about it, but if it was another coach he would be ridiculed. K literally told Thornton to reclassify, because he would get minutes,Thornton does that gets some burn and honestly, I thought he was solid. Now apparently this is K basically forcing him out of the program to make room for that Bolden kid. *** Coach K.

I'm not so sure. I think unless you really know the details, we should be a little careful to make judgement, particularly when our situation with some guys recently who "left" the program could be interpreted in different ways.

I rarely defend anything even closely related to Dook, but in this case, I believe it's warranted based on what we know. What is Coach K supposed to do? He gave Thornton an opportunity and he didn't play as well as the coach would have liked and doesn't believe he will probably be as good as another star recruit coming on board. Is he supposed to give Thornton the nod again this year (at the team's expense) just because he reclassified?

Based on what I read, this doesn't seem to be a case where Coach K is forcing a kid out of the program. It seems to be more of a situation where the kid (and father) see the writing on the wall and believe it would be better for him long term to play on a different team who needs him on the floor more.

That's because we [the board] aren't privy to what the staff is actually doing on the recruiting trail, beyond what we can piece together.

I'd be shocked if they weren't involved with numerous players / transfer options that we aren't aware of, or who haven't been identified as "logical" targets.

Just have to think the staff thinks they can get Diallo in the class and re-classify. Otherwise the Joseph departure doesn't make much sense

I'm sure they have a lot of feelers out, but that's I meant by the hive (this place) isn't buzzing. I can't remember the last time SU had a surprise recruit that didn't pop up on the radar in advance of an offer. Maybe Buss. There's not a lot rumors floating around and it's fairly quiet for something should be pretty busy for a team that needs some depth and has 3-4 openings. The late signing deadline is only just over a month away. Is there a different deadline for transfers?

The problem is that the transfer market is quickly growing thin, at least the grad market. The traditional transfer list does seem as inspiring as year's past and I wonder how many are SU fits. I know very little about what's available from the JUCO ranks, but you'd have to imagine the best options are already committed...Anybody have any JUCO's out there?

That's very true, but it's also true that the available players is growing smaller by the day...

Thornton is certainly an interesting development for a team that could use a PG. Unfortunately, he may want to go back out West and play. Still ...

I posted this over in the Taurean thread last night, but TT's teammate at Brewster, Alpha Diallo, is a top-100 recruit (#94 according to ESPN) and is uncommitted. I have a hard time seeing JB going after him, or really anyone this late, with much urgency. But it's fun to pretend.

Yeah, clearly we're struggling. 4 straight final fours WOULD be better, but two in four ain't bad. I'll go with JB's plan over yours. No offense.

I think you've made your opinions known (many times), and it's quite clear you have no idea what you're talking about. You have no clue whether a recruit demonstrates authentic SU interest, where he is on the board or how me might fit in the system, what timing or expectations might have been discussed for an offer or commitment, what JB does or doesn't do with any specific recruit, how often he or other coaches visit with the recruit, when staff communicates by phone, twitter or text, when they watch games, meet or talk with parents, etc.. So I wish you would find another place to make backhanded accusations that the SU coach is lazy in recruiting. This is a fan forum, and you're degrading the quality of the dialogue with all the smack you're spewing.
