Transition...

If we don't make the move this year I have no confidence we make a good hire when we do.

Just pay Nate Oats and usher in a new era. There is no chance things get better this season wasn't even that bad we were .500 in the ACC. I don't want to see JB after his kids have left.

Why would Oats leave Alabama to go to Syracuse? They understand the NIL game a lot better than we do. The SEC is on the up for basketball. And he makes great money.

It's going to take a new coach a few years to start to move back up, and we might not ever be a top 10 program again.
A top coach could have this program competing for a NC by year two. Basketball is so much different than any other sport even more so with the wild, wild west known as the portal.

People think it’s gonna come crashing down when JB retires. I mean we have been a bubble team for how long?

It’s not even about being a top high school recruiter anymore. It’s recruiting the transfer portal. Look at all the top 25 teams. They are littered with transfers. All of them.

You could literally go from a terrible team to a good one in one season. Look at UK last year. Losing record. They got Oscar Tshiebwe from West Virginia, Sahvir Wheeler from Georgia and POW they are back in top 10.

Get a coach with the right networks and salesmanship. We would be right back in the mix immediately.

10 million dollar buyout.

Is there still a lot of fans that don’t want JB to retire? Seems to me its about 75 to 25 in favor of it these days.
The main person against it seems to be JB himself.
It could be 99 to 1 percent of fans looking for a change but if the administration and the BOT don't call for it then does it really matter.

Man, I was in school when those guys used to go head to head. Does that mean...I'm old?
Lots of us remember Satalin coaching the Bonnies but how many remember him playing there.

It’s not going to happen. There will be no change after this year. JB wants to coach and he has 100% support from Wildhack. Discussing it like there’s a chance it’s going to happen is just beating a dead horse. Not only is a change not happening this year, I doubt it happens after next year either. He would have have to have at least two consecutive losing seasons in a row to make Wildhack even contemplate making a change.

Since title of thread is Transition...
The Transition from NCAA Bubble to NIT Bubble = WRONG direction.

Better program and a job that hasn't been available in close to 50 years? ALabama doesn't care about basketball they are more concerned abotu their spring game than a tournament run.

I’m offended by the notion that people think “sit around and do nothing” is the only option for a rich person once they stop working.

Sounds kind of nice tbh

Agreed.

The time for a transition hire is when things are going WELL. Under those circumstances, giving an unproven AC a chance to take the reins makes sense, to see if they can continue the program's trajectory of solid performance. And if they can't, then the AD makes a quick adjustment in 2-3 years to bring in somebody else from outside the program before there's a big dropoff.

The problem here is, the downward trend of decline has been so steep, we can't afford to take a flyer on an unproven commodity and risk letting things get worse over a 2-3 year span. Which is precisely why a continuity hire makes zero sense in our situation.
We are officially at the "rip the band aid off" stage of this thing. Rip it off. Go outside the program and start fresh.

THIS. ^^^^ 1,444%.

You ONLY do a “continuity hire” if there’s a program trajectory worth continuing.

There isn’t.

We’re not UNC or Duke, who have been rolling along of late.

This is now an 8 year slide, masked by a few nice NCAA runs.

I miss having a number next to our name.
Don’t you?

Was at barber shop earlier, they had ESPN on, and the blurb about the “last Big Monday” of the regular season w Syracuse at UNC, and then nothing to expand or elaborate on it, because - nobody cares.

BINGO! This program has moved into irrelevant status. They are now the "plucky underdog" that won 2 games on the opening weekend. Imagine telling a Cuse fan 10 years ago, they'd be lucky to be a bubble team year in and year out. They have ZERO Q1 wins this year. ZERO. That is embarrassing. That is absolute garbage.

I think most fans are bullish on Wildhack based on the football hires, but I wonder what direction he will go with the women's basketball program. I don't think Vonn Read has any chance of returning, but will he prioritize an alumnus, like a Felisha Leggett-Jack, or a known entity like a Tammi Reiss, or does he go a totally different direction to make a splash. Not exactly the same as the men's program but it could be a harbinger of things going forward.

Maybe.

But there are bound to be ramifications after a season of subpar play - ESPECIALLY if we finish below .500.

What was once an unlimited rope might cease to be that anymore. Which in turn could hasten change.

SU has some built in advantages:
1) JB has proven you can win here
2) a university that has proved in can be loyal and patient with good coaches
3) the ACC conference
4) the opportunity to play in the largest college stadium in front of the largest college crowds
5) global brand recognition

When JB finally does retire, SU will be fighting off applicants.
