Trebor Pena transferring to PSU

Well we’re coming got multiple years with Rickie. Gotta thing of it as a dynasty and he’s a rookie

in my fandom i just believe no one is here for multiple years. if they are, what a pleasant surprise, but the reality is any player could bolt. is what it is

A significant blow. At least he left in the offseason instead of bailing on his teammates to the portal in mid-season. As if somebody would ever be such a me-first jerk to do something like that…

2 things I have questions on that I don’t think we will know.

1. When did this all transpire. If Fran had a captains meeting last night and was yelling and letting them talk, he must not have known anything by then.

2. Would pena leave if McCord came back this year?

Here is the reality of the situation...

It sounds like Pena came to Coach Brown telling him that "hey i got this offer and if you dont match it I am going to take it." To which Fran reminded him that they already had a deal in place and he knew this before.

I see this on a daily basis with students in housing at Ithaca College. Its mind blowing how this generation has such a sense of entitlement. From all accounts, Pena was upset that he did NOT get the counter offer from Fran Brown. He felt that he could use this as a basis for negotiation. We all know Coach Fran isnt that guy.

If he wanted to do a negotiation he needed to do that back in December. Doing it at this point, in Coach Browns eyes is turning their back on him and his teammates. That is not loyalty. That is why Fran told him, if you want to go, go. This is not the first time Pena has done this to Fran since the season ended.

Syracuse will miss Trebor, but he is not unreplaceable.
If this is how it went down then we're better off without Pena.

While part of me agrees, it wasn’t that long ago that SU left an eastern league they helped form to join a southern league for a bigger payday. Many fans agree with that move, stating it was needed for survival. Though it may have been needed for financial viability, we haven’t competed as successfully in football or basketball since making that move.

SU sacrificed their brand for financial gain. I’m not sure we have any moral standing to criticize these players that are doing the same thing. It’s part of the game now but it started long ago before players could be directly compensated. The players didn’t start this.
No, the players didn't start this. We did.

A long time ago, fans of a school said to other fans we want the best back out there and they became "boosters" and loaded a bag full and went on a visit and said to many different players, if you come and play for us this is yours. And to make it even sweeter, you don't even have to go to class we'll fix it with the professors. And they came. From '57 to '67 we had some really good teams.

I know I was there in the sixties. Selling meal tickets for money to anyone who would buy was the game then, but it created a Syracuse University scandal that brought athletes to dorms and dorm food.

Now it's cars, money, girls, and they can't get caught - it's legal and look at my school it's been in the top 25 for 25 years.

It doesn't matter to me anymore to see what's happening - but I have feeling things will change and the bags will stop arriving, when is anyones guess.

I get the analogy but Syracuse has had two 10 win seasons in the ACC.

I hope so but I don't see it. I would kill for 7-5. I fear a lot worse.
Week 1 can set the tone. That Tenn QB chasing the bag has given us a better chance than we ever expected.
IF we win that early game we likely spend most of September ranked until we head down to Death Valley. IF we take a beating which is more likely we will need to get our affairs in order real fast.

Lol Shrmdougluvr why did you throw a stiletto asking a question to confirm he graduated?
Because the system you've been stumping for over the last few years has no interest in whether this kid graduated. I know from your posting history, that you are a thoughtful person, but you wanted this system where everyone can just prostitute themselves for top dollar. It struck me as disingenuous (or hypocritical) to then act as though receiving a degree has anything to do with it.

Look on the bright side! More NIL $ to offer the proven LB and the CB we have been pursuing.
This is where I'm at. If we lose games it's not going to be because Nixon can't find ways to score it's because our defense can't stop these top tier athletes on the road.

That particular poster is very loose with the shoes.

I’d wager they have the highest “stilettos to likes” ratio on the board, by a country mile.

And my next one from them likely inbound in 3, 2, 1….

These are facts. Why would I give a stiletto to a post i agree with?

It's a message board. Me dropping a stiletto is simply easier than going around and posting a response to any post that I "dislike." And somewhat sadistically, I think it makes the boards more fun.

Yep. Negotiating for reasonable NIL is part of the deal now (however misguided the notion is). But that doesn't justify bag-chasing or quitting on his teammates - especially after all the coaching he received, support from players and staff through his injuries, being named a team captain, etc. Yes he put in the work, but he owes a great deal to them. The questions burn through: Are you are committed? Do you care? And can we trust you? Now we have the answers.

I think the coaches started this. A bunch of glorified gym teachers (credit OttoMets ) getting paid millions upon millions (guaranteed) when almost none of them are actual difference makers (Saban, Harbaugh, Meyer - that's the least of unassailable difference makers). They kept making more and more, coming and going as they pleased, while treating the players like chattel. That's where the fundamental fairness issue lies.

I guess at the true core, it does actually go back to fans. Fans care too much and that caring (taking the form of financial support) is the real driver I suppose. They are the ones that allowed coaching salaries to inflate. And they're the ones now buying players left and right with absolutely no return on investment.

One thing I do wonder about...a few weeks ago, Jackson Holser (sp) had the head of recruiting from 247 on his show. He said that the way Fran is recruiting Florida, Head coaches from Florida are going to be hearing from large donors about why Syracuse is doing such a great job down in Florida. I wonder if it is Miami, if this is a message to Fran about recruiting down in Florida. Just a thought.

Fran Brown's culture and his strength as a coach is built around recruiting and keeping a huge pool of talent coming in so he can keep them as long as he can keep them. He knows we are not adding 0's onto NIL deals and we are not in the SEC or the BIG feeding the NFL. He also knows he's not the best X's and O's guy or some master tactician at least yet. It's a #'s game.

His best option to win in CNY is to build a culture that keeps the young talent coming en masse and hope he can retain them until they develop. DART, community service, getting good grades in class, making the team stay in dorms to develop relationships. It's all meant to get them invested locally and keep them here as long as he can to develop them into something we need and keep these things from happening. The money will always be there though.

This time it didn't work but also Pena is 23 and will be playing his 6th and last year of college football where there's a high likelihood that he may become just another practice dummy on Sundays for the league minimum.

Cristobal should be sweating. He stinks.

Behave or you may get a stiletto from me. ;)
Me, several spots behind CuseLegacy in line:

When you get down to it, sports are pretty much meaningless in the grand scheme of things in terms of having a tangible, measurable impact on people's lives. It's just a pure emotional exercise. That's why I'm always a bit baffled at comments saying "I don't blame the player, go get your bag". If the whole point of this is to serve as an emotional outlet for happiness and pride, why should I drop all that when a player bolts for the portal? You no longer serve the one purpose for people being fans, what happens to you now I do not care one bit and I will not get upset if things go south. Am I an outier with this mentality? Probably. But I see no reason why I should support the player now.
Right. And WHEN it was just about school pride, we had that in common. We could relate to that. Now, they have much more in common with pro athletes than any other student on that campus.

Did anyone mention yet that Malachi Coleman, Malachi James, and Darrell Gill Jr. didn't play in the Spring Game because they were at a track meet?
Nope that doesn't fit the doom and gloom narrative. :)

At the end of the day we are all just water

If history has taught us anything, the South holds grudges for a long time.

I would argue that is 100% false.

Taking Euro league pro soccer for example...

When a player is sold to another team, often times, the selling club gets a "sell-on" clause in the transfer contract (a set amount of money paid back the the selling club if the player is transferred again to a like league team within a specified amount of time - say 3 years.) ... If the player get's sold twice in 3 years, the original club gets a cut.

Why?

Because the club has invested time and $$$ in developing the player that is being sold and it's an accepted business practice that some of that development cost is returned to the club on a player that is moving on to bigger/better.

In this case, do you think Syracuse invested time and money into developing Pena into the player he is today?

Obviously, the answer is yes.

Now you could argue that's just the cost of doing business - ok... but there are precedents in other pro sports to recoup some of the value of player development.
I’ve thought this very same thing. Could keep a lot of schools afloat
