NBA championship between the Thunder and the Heat was the first major professional team championship in the US that did not feature at least one team whose name did not end in "s"

I would have guessed it happened in hockey before with their non-"s" teams (e.g., Avalanche, Wild), but I'm not sure hockey counts as a "major professional sport."

the Avalanche have appeared in the finals twice, but both times vs. "s" teams (Panthers, Devils)
the Lightning have appeared once, beating the Flames

note: it can only ever happen in basketball or hockey - every NFL team ends in "s", and in MLB, the only non-"s" teams are the Red Sox and White Sox who of course cannot play each other in the world series

Might it also be the only championship game involving two teams with weather-related nicknames?

MLS outdraws hockey, and it's happened 9 times. Nine times!
