How Syracuse Held Off Marquette To Remain Beasts Of The Big East

The biggest question I have about Syracuse right now -- really the only question -- is to what degree this team's biggest strength (balance) becomes its primary weakness (lack of a go-to guy). Think of it this way: If it's a regional final, and it's late in the game and late in the shot clock, who gets the ball? It should be Kris Joseph, but he doesn't have a takeover personality. It might be Scoop Jardine, but he's not a great shooter and tends to be careless. Brandon Triche? He's solid but not spectacular. It will probably end up being Dion Waiters, but given that he's a sophomore who comes off the bench, is that really ideal? This is a good problem to have, but it is a problem.Seth Davis

New Orleans A Good Championship Host

Syracuse: From a consistency standpoint, no team in the country has been as impressive as the No. 1-ranked Orange. The nation's deepest team features 10 players who are averaging double-digit minutes. Their overall balance is remarkable. Jim Boeheim and the Orange deserve loads of credit for blocking out the distractions that accompanied the Bernie Fine mess and keeping their focus on the court. Syracuse doesn't play another ranked team until Feb. 8, so don't be surprised if its run continues.

It appears the best high school basketball players in the country right now are juniors Jabari Parker, Nerlens Noel and Julius Randle.

While Parker may be the best right now, Biancardi said he believes Noel may be the best in the future.

“Noel’s the nation’s top shot-blocker and probably could be the nation’s best pro prospect,” Biancardi said. “Noel may be the best pro prospect only because of his innate ability to do something very special and change the game by blocking shots.”
He is a 6-10 center for Tilton (N.H.) School who has Georgetown, Connecticut, Kansas, Kentucky and Florida on his list of college teams.

Nerlens Noel: 6-10, 210 pounds-C

Even though Noel is ranked #2 behind Parker, he seems to be the #1 guy Calipari has been targeting. He followed Noel all summer and has been called one of the best shot blockers in high school in the last 20 years (if true that makes him better than Anthony Davis, wow). Noel’s list consists of UK, UL (he visited them last week), North Carolina, Florida, and Kansas. This should be an interesting recruitment to follow and UK has a great chance at landing this stud.

Boys & Girls @ Lincoln (Saturday, 4 p.m.)

The game needs no introduction. The two teams met for the PSAL Class AA title game last March at Madison Square Garden and have combined to win nine of the last 10 city titles. Boys & Girls may have the PSAL’s top senior in Leroy (Truck) Fludd while Lincoln counters with the best prospect, sophomore sensation Isaiah Whitehead. Coney Island figures to be a safety hazard Saturday afternoon when the two heated rivals meet for the first time with the bragging rights and the top spot in Brooklyn AA on the line.

Syracuse Mention

Williams made a comparison to coach Jim Boeheim’s Syracuse team which lost to Marquette twice last season.

“It’s kind of like Syracuse last year when we were playing them,” said Williams. “They lost two in a row and all the pundits are saying ‘Boeheim, why don’t you quit playing zone?’ He’s not going to quit playing zone. He’s won 845 games at that point playing zone. He ain’t going to quit playing zone.

“We don’t play zone but look at how we play. That’s the way we’re designed and that’s the way we coach to play.

Former Players

For some reason my NBA links & Photos aren't working this morning when I post them here. I'll just give a rundown on what former SU players did on Sunday & Monday.

Melo had 22 in a win over the Bobcats and there was bleacher report that said Carmelo Anthony vs Kobe Bryant: Who is the NBA's best closer?

Wes had 5 on Sunday in 20 minutes and was scoreless in 19 minutes last night. Donte had nothing in 8 minutes.

Hak had 4 in 13 minutes on Sunday. There was an article: Warrick "Tebows" in pre-game huddle that wouldn't post and a blog post that gave Hak a B+ thus far this season.

First, I don't know why they argue the fact that we, "don't have a go-to guy" when we have seen almost every player become a "go-to guy" at one point or another. I also think that if we really need to come up with a shot, we have many guy's who can do so and have done so in the past. Dion is probably going to will himself to the top of that list.

Second, are we out of the mix with Noel? I believe we were one of the first on him. It seems like everyone is leaving us out. I understand the second article coming from a UK writer. I guess a championship would solve all this hullabaloo.

Given that he went to our Midnight Madness, we'll be there till the end. Most likely scenario is that he picks UK and we get his buddy Goodluck.
