1) stay with Allen and secure a lost season this year and a lost season next year

or

2)switch to Hunt, have a shot at a bowl this year and a QB with two years of eligibility remaining

seems simple to me

regardless of whether or not Hunt faced 2nd stringers, he moved the ball with the same plays quickly and efficiently with our second team.

Hunt doesn't guarantee a bowl any more than Allen does. In fact, I'd say this team has far too many warts to even be remotely considered for a bowlgame. Adding FSU and Clemson to our current losses, I don't see where this team goes 6-2 with our remaining opponents.

The only thing I see now is improvement for the future.

Wagner and Tulane are just about locks.

Wake Forest, Pitt and BC (all home) are possible wins.

Can't count us out on the road at NC State and Maryland.

Georgia Tech is a longshot.

Six wins isn't a longshot.

Exactly... A 2-3 start was likely. Our real season starts on October 12th...

seriously, what did people really think Cuse was beating ped st and northwestern??

i know i kool aided and orange glassed a W over ped st pick, but lets be serious...neither were ever really in play.

0-2 is what the schedule dictated.

the problem is, the coaching staff is obviously a bunch of buffoons.

hunt v the 3rd or 4th team doesnt mean shlit.

The problem isn't the 2 losses. It's the way that we've lost. I was prepared for 0-2, and may have even expected it. PSU is still PSU. Northwestern returned a lot of talent from the team that beat us last year, while we lost a lot the talent that kept the game close.

I did not expect our defense to allow 71 points in the first two games. I did not expect our QB to have a 6:1 INT to TD ratio. And I certainly didn't expect both units to look so utterly bewildered while doing it.

The coaches are the managers of the team. Their job is to put their people in positions to be successful. Can they do that?

this staff dont believe in options - just ask hunt

im starting to wonder if when mcdonald was a kid he forced the round peg into the square hole because it was the only option

At this point I'm not going to say Hunt should replace Allen because I haven't seen him play meaningful snaps, but if it becomes obvious we aren't making a bowl, he has to start the rest of the season.

How does he play meaningful snaps if he doesn't replace him. Wait for Allen to get hurt? No one wants that

I see a number of people suggesting Hunt should start because he looked more in control than Allen did. I'm saying anything Hunt did while Northwestern was in wind-down-the-clock mode doesn't trump what the coaches saw in practice during the preseason.

The big picture is not the offense, its the complete and utter lack of execution by the secondary. You can't give people a 5 yard cushion, and then when the catch is made not tackle. The safeties did not make a play in yesterdays game, there appeared to be no help, and the receivers were running wide open all day. Whoever the Secondary coach is needs to get that fixed.

That's probably true. But if that's true, than it's also true that we haven't seen anything yet from the starting QB to suggest that he can help us win games. He may be our best option. I don't know.

For the 9 millionth time on this board: playing time doesn't necessarily equal development. If you want to argue hunt is better, that's fine. But simply inserting him into what has been an inept offense doesn't mean he's x% better next year. In fact, it will likely mean a huge chunk of the board will be ready to move on from hunt by November instead of by week 2 next season.

This.

Don't get me wrong, Hunt did great with his opportunity. But it was garbage time, against the 2nd or 3rd team on a team not known for good defense.

Until the offensive line consistently opens holes to establish the run game, and the passing game gets itself coordinated so that the QB and receivers are on the same page, then we're going to struggle.

It starts with getting the freakin plays in from the sidelines quickly and everyone knowing what they're supposed to do. Which still didn't happen yesterday. Somewhat better than the Penn St. game but by no means good. Too many times the offense is confused and the play clock is running out.

I think there are more options than that.

Yes, more options are available.

I have to believe that Allen plays better in practice - that's why he won the job.

But, I do recall feeling that Perry Patterson was playing better in practice - that I saw personally - and Joe Fields got the job.

I had no facts to back it up at all, but I recall thinking at the time that the staff back then felt comitted to starting JF as part of its recruiting pitch.

I wonder if that is part of the equation this year. If so, and if Drew continues to turn the ball over, one would have to believe that Hunt gets a meaningful shot.

well, it's not like you could blame anyone for not wanting to start patterson. it might've just been a desperate hail mary

Thanks buddy... Lluvmygrands will be posting in 1...2...3...4

If we're going to run read option I'm all for playing a QB that can/will actually run. As of now we have a QB that can chuck it 70 yards but struggles getting it past the line from 20 in. I'd rather give up big throw potential for reduced turnovers and a running threat to keep defenses guessing.
