UNLV QB refuses to play rest of season

They can’t include performance agreements in the contracts that are written right now. I know SU doesn’t allow that because they’re following the rules. Any that exist are definitely verbal promises.
I get the rules, but right now it sounds like the whole thing is verbal. This is not individual performance metrics, it’s team metrics, so maybe… My point really is that written or not, someone has already schemed a way to get an advantage from this story/situation that will again change the way it’s done and disadvantage players, and have-nots.

We found out Sluka wasn’t getting paid, offered him for next year in writing….conditional on him sitting out the rest of the season.

No idea, but would be a helluva move….
not sure this got enough air play Jake but this would be out of the Red Auerbach playbook.

I don’t know what straight guys has to do with anything but I don’t think I know one friend in this world that is going to turn on the WNBA when there is a NFL game on.
Before the last few years the only guys I knew who were into the WNBA were gay. It's just the next step in cultural relevance.

I just can't watch women playing sports and I'm not sure why, just can't get into it. I support the idea of it and am glad it exists and so forth, but can't sit down and actually watch it.

Especially two weeks before we would have to play them! Would that be considered tampering or something though? It would be some serious 4D chess.
That's an additional dimension of chess. The idea of getting to 4-1 now without Sluka in the way is making me happy this weekend. I still look at every SU season under the prism of "where's 6 wins". I think we can get 2 wins out of the final 7. If not, someone call Dan Mullen

I love watching women's professional soccer whenever I'm on the West Coast i will take in a game if possible.

Circa offering to pay the money and UNLV not wanting is an interesting twist
Not sure having the CEO of a major betting house paying your QB a ton of money is a great move. Even the slumbering NCAA might wake up and take a look at something like that.

Have you considered tennis or beach volleyball?

I am not thinking 4-1 or taking UNLV for granted as a win, even without their starting quarterback. Their players and team could very well rally around the new guy and he might be quite good. I just want to beat HC and get to 3-1.

Looking for incremental growth in our line play and running game.

This still makes little to no sense. He could have still played this week and kept his red shirt. So if he was owed money, why not wait for UNLV to get the funds, which apparently would be easy to get? It is too late now, but apparently the money is there. Unless of course he just does not like it there and/or wants to be elsewhere and this was his way out.

Edit

Also one has to wonder if he was about to lose some PT. They had a bye week and the first 3 games there was nothing through the air. Maybe there was a plan for the #2 QB to get some PT this next game to jump start the passing game, and he decided to bounce now.

I'm about 99% sure that's tampering, but other than that, yes - strategery at it's finest :)

…because the head coach told him to go screw.

If you are trying to make the playoffs and he is your clear #1 QB, then you find a way. That being said maybe he wasn't the clear #1 and the HC thought they could do just as well without him.

Are there prohibitions on NIL deals with sports betting companies? I would think that has to be legislated at the state level.

Has anyone else noticed the dog that isn’t barking here? Because once you (don’t) hear it, it’s blindingly obvious what actually happened here.

Sluka’s main claim is a UNLV assistant (Brennan Marion) promised him a $100K NIL deal. Now look at UNLV’s public statements:
- the coach thought his request for money was “pay for play” - and they would NEVER violate the rules.
- The NIL group never had a formal agreement in place.
- the school did a full investigation and found nothing wrong.

Anything in there that says “Brennan Marion DID NOT offer a $100K NIL deal to Sluka”? Nope.

So that means one of two things - the PR folks at UNLV are incompetent dopes who can’t even figure out how to refute the central claim against them, OR - they aren’t refuting it because they can’t. I’m very confident which of those it is. My guess is the head coach, when told by Sluka that Marion had offered him $100K - never bothered to follow up with Marion because he already kinda knew the answer and couldn’t afford to confirm with certainty what he already “knew”.

Hopefully this becoming public discourages kids from agreeing to play at UNLV, the program goes in the dumpster and their coaching staff gets fired after a 2-10 season in a couple years. While that only gets rid of a small portion of the slimy, unethical people currently working at UNLV - at least it would provide Sluka (and whoever else these clowns have screwed) some measure of justice.

No idea what the state laws are like in Nevada.

I would think the conflict of interest here should be obvious to all and not something any reputable institution of higher learning would allow.

It is already pretty clearly a play for pay situation. Based on what UNLV has reacted, it sounds like they feel they are already in deep water here and are cutting ties completely to try and avoid an NCAA investigation.

By only playing 3 games Sluka could conceivably rent himself out to UNLV for that 4th game at let’s say…..$50K……if they need it for bowl eligibility or to draw a large crowd.

He has one year left to maximize his earnings. If he either got screwed out of money or got a better offer, all one more game is is a risk for him to get hurt without being paid.

This is a no brainer for him either way. Yes, it's awful in terms of the idea of college football, but you have to make your money.

100% - Sluka's people went on the record. I am sure there was a verbal commitment, it fell through, Sluka was like, if you aren't paying me, I'm not playing and I'll make money next year and not get hurt this year.
