UBuffalo Wild Wings Postgame

JJ is the only player on this team that can actually get to the rim off the dribble. He missed a couple last night, but everyone else is just hanging out at the three point line. People need to give it a rest with JJ. He’s a big part of this team. People say Kingz should get his minutes. Why? Kingz was totally nonexistent last night on both ends of the court.
Kingz was not nonexistent. He did not get the time some of the others received. The box score reads 17 minutes. He made a three to start and was promptly subbed out for Betsey and did it see the court again for a good 10 minutes. He also made two impressive buckets in traffic to start the second half and once again was subbed out.

After watching exactly one half of the game, I can state with 95% confidence the minutes should look like this:

PG - Nate 30 mpg, Luke 10mpg
SG - JJ 25 mpg, Kingz 5-10 mpg, Kiyan 5-10 mpg, maybe some Luke for 1-2 min
SF - Kingz 15 mpg, Betsey 20 mpg, Kiyan 5 mpg
PF - Donnie 25-30 mpg, White 10-15 mpg, Betsey for 1-3 if needed
C - Kyle 25-30 mpg, Soure 10 mpg, Donnie or White 5 mpg

Deep reserves - Cheffy, Womack, Zephir

I think we’ll settle down on the turnovers once George gets comfortable with his new teammates. I’m a bit concerned we down have a good low post defense and offensive presence. I like Kyle’s motor, but he’s going to be raw. If he can defend and out-rebound the opponent we should be okay. I see that as our biggest weakness right now.

Positives are this team is a significant athletic upgrade over the past decade’s worth of SU teams. Hopefully they can play under control.

The Cincinnati kid took his minutes tonight. It's a long season. Kingz is a talent.

Freeman needs to get in a fight. He needs to get his butt kicked.
I said it last year that he was too soft for his talent, and didn't really know how to play.

He's got all the measurables you could ask for as an NBA scout, but you need to WANT the rebound. You need to WANT to dunk on the other guy.

He's soft as hell, and if Red just lets him float at the 3 point line without any structure or plan for how to use his physical advantages, then it will be all over.

Kevin Durant became Kevin Durant by learning how to make a 2 dribble move to get into the midrange and just jump over his SF defender to get a clean 10-15 foot look at the basket. He developed the 3 point shot later. He started as a midrange guy.
I'd like to see him with DC's attitude, we would be at a minimum a 3 seed in the tournament. And a sleeper to win it all.

A lot to unpack here. Some of it I get especially shot selection and goin with the hot hand.

What I will correct you on is that losing to Houston and Kansas within 24 hours on the road will not impact our tourney chances. There’s not a team in the league right now that is going 2-0 in Vegas against those 2 in 24 hours and very few would be able to get just one win. That 3rd game in Vegas will be more important tho and not getting blown off our own court by Tennessee will matter

One other thing and It’s not just you, it’s a lot of others but I think you need to look at the minutes guys played. George played the 4th most mins on the team but we all know he will see the most mins on the team in games that matter.

Kingz you called out for only getting 4 shots but look at his efficiency in 19 mins. 3-4 7 points and 4 REBOUNDS. Don’t get me started on the 3 years we played Bell and it took him 3 games playing 35 mins a game to pull down 4 rebounds.
i dont really wanna argue but when the optimistic poster is already writing off the non-con as no big wins and hoping not to get blown off the court? I just cant get excited.

i really hope this team just goes out there and kills it...but I wouldnt put my money on that happening, based on the 1 exhibtion game ive seen.

im not calling out kingz but the whole system that doesnt get the ball to the right shooters. the best shooter needs to shoot the most shots. i know. its crazy. but i will stick by that.

I think you nailed the front court. 4-5 guys splitting the 4-5 should be fine. I really liked how we played with Donnie at the 5 and that’s even with no Sadiq.

Back court. Fennell isn’t going to see 10 mins a game. I think maybe 2-3 mins a half or less most games. George is a workhorse and at least in big games and conference play he needs to be out there 35+ a game.

Also I don’t see Betsey playing 20 a game. No doubt he looked great shooting but he was sleeping on D too. Great to have the option but Sadiq is going to get his mins.

I stand by my comment earlier if you had to place a bet I think our 2nd unit of Fennell Kiyan Betsey Sadiq Suare would take down our starters last year at this time of year. That would’ve been Carlos JJ Bell Donnie Eddie late October.

I think there's a realistic element of PTSD in a lot of the comments, which IMO, is very understandable.
Red has lost the confidence of most of the fans, myself included. Yes, the team looks better athletically, but scheme-wise, tenor of the team/players, and coaching philosophy...who exactly are we??? For my own mental stability, I prefer to err on the side of caution.
Until proven otherwise, "I'm from Missouri" ...he has to show me.

Seems you won’t have to burden yourself with watching another game then.

If you think people overreacted to last night's exhibition game, just look at Duke twitter right now. Absolutely psychotic.

Duke and Tennessee will win games but their quality is pretty down compared to last year. I suspect you'll see a drop in quality across the board since all the 44 year old players lost eligibility.
I’m not sure I’d compare our game to that one…

Have to agree here. I see all the same things you mentioned. Local radio hosts give him so much love and I really haven’t seen what they seem to. He needs a private console with Derrick Coleman to get his butt closer to the basket and learn how to attack and then we’ll see what this kid can be.

George has always been a little loose with his passing. We saw some of that against Buffalo.

His elite 34.6 assist% puts him just outside the top10 in that category, but his turnover% of 19.9 puts him a little higher than the truly elite group of point guards.

His handle is good, he doesn't get ripped very often, but he tries to thread the needle a lot. I agree with the second bolded quote wholeheartedly. Hopefully, with a better offensive team around him this season, he takes the easy pass a little more often and gives his teammates wide open threes instead of passing into double teams for spectacular plays.

He for sure needs to mix it up inside. I'll give Donnie credit though, when he was in playing the 5 I thought we were solid. I don't think Buffalo actually scored with him at the 5.

-Easy layup from Donnie to JJ
-Donnie steal / George to Donnie lob dunk on the break
-Buffalo Timeout. We come out of the break pressing. Force a 10 second
-Buffalo took some bad contested shots when they broke the press but were flustered
-Kiyan had a couple bad turnovers running the point with JJ but also had a nice steal too. Zephyr came in and then Suare came in for Donnie a little after that.

We have been too slow or not long enough to press forever now and I thought it looked really good for late October.

Looked like press lineup was Donnie/George/Kingz/JJ/Kiyan. True small ball but really there is still plenty of size and quickness there.

Not trying to make any massive assessments or predictions coming off of an opening scrimmage… just love seeing my favorite team in all of sportsdom playing again!

P.S. Also very much enjoyed the athletic difference between Kyle this year & Lampkin last year😂
Speaking of Lampkin, is he playing overseas or is he playing anywhere for that matter?

I think this team is vastly superior to our recent teams. It’s going to come down to coaching. I was highly encouraged with the first half and then the 2nd half was awful.
If this wasn't a Buffalo team that is ranked in the 300's I would be ok with the performance, but not excited about the coaching at all. We have talent but it has to be coached up, did not see this game 1.

how is it dumb?
Coach Autry hasn't proven anything other than he can lose.

How many games did we lose last year in the second half?
If AA is like FB and digs his heels in - doesn't switch up the lineup - we're screwed.

Your personal attack was offensive.
It’s dumb because Collins is a liability and barely qualifies as a d-1 player. JJ while disappointing is still a viable player on almost any team in the country

Honestly the riskier passes don’t bother me. The lazy passes from the freshmen and sloppy dribble handoffs though can’t happen.

George missed on a couple of connections with Kyle, including twice when he didn’t roll as expected.

In general he’s in complete command when he’s on the floor even as a release valve.

One of the Kyle ones was as Kyle tried to roll but was pushed off of his path. it seemed like something to be aware of and try to fix, but hopefully won't happen a ton.

Good call out - forgot he got bumped there. He was a little jumpy early on but once he settled in his impact and what he can bring to the table was clear. Anyone who watched him the first 5-6 minutes I’m sure was wondering if we struck out with this kid but that was put to rest for me.

One could say in General he's the complete General in command! For real though George played the 4th most mins on the team. I really think he'll be playing 35+ mins a game and more minutes that everyone else. I see no reason for him to ever come off the court except to get a quick rest.

I don't know though guys these Exhibitions are really getting out of hand. Duke played Boozer 39 mins yesterday. I'm not sure why. When he pulled down his 15th rebound did they really need to keep him to pull down 8 more rebounds so they could pull out a win at Tennessee in exhibition. Like what are they proving, what if he gets banged up early ha.

Are we supposed to play George and Donnie 39 mins just to make a point against a team that doesn't matter so the fanbase or the media watching has a warm and fuzzy feeling. I don't know what the answer is.

Yeah it’s nuts. They don’t count outside of public perception and even then they are quickly forgotten.

As for George- in many games I expect he is out there 34 mpg or more. Luke is going to be valuable as a backup pg as he gets more time and it’s important that he develops so things don’t fall apart if George is in foul trouble.
