Ugliness at Rocky Top

Considering the volatility of the human personality, and the influence of mob behavior combined with alcohol, it’s a miracle that this stuff doesn’t happen every day at every game. Just like it’s a miracle that we can drive down the street and be certain for the most part that there won’t be cars driving straight at us down the wrong side of the road, ignoring stop signs and driving down sidewalks. Though those things are becoming more common. As sto said, got to stop it in its place. It doesn’t take much for bad behavior to get a foothold.

agreed and look, i’ve seen a bunch of posts mentioning the alcohol sold in the stadium, that’s crazy. This was a night game these people had been partying all day long. Tennessee tailgates are epic.

the real benefit of wearing a covid mask her identity would have been a mystery.

the youngsters must not be old enough to remember all the beer being thrown at Miami players going into the tunnel when they pulled their team off the Carrier Dome field for all the sht being thrown at their bench.

Need I mention Georgetown when their team was pulled off the court?
I do remember Canes fans in the upper deck throwing beer on SU fans. They were pretty big guys I think the ushers were afraid to interject.

Wow. It was October 11, 1980. What’s amazing looking at our schedule, we played Northwestern in the dome a week after the first game ever and only 34,000 people showed up. That is incredible to me. Can that even be correct? The second game ever in the stadium and you won the week before and everybody was already apathetic. My goodness.

That’s why even attendance now, after these 6 years, the attendance really isn’t that bad.

Part of the problem with Miami was Warren Sapp blatantly taunting the crowd behind the Canes’ bench. What a piece of work he was. But no, no excuse for throwing things.

That was the U of the 90s . The more they could antagonize and the more vile that they stirred up the better they liked it. It didn’t hurt that they possessed a ton of NFL bound players.

There was an incident near midfield on the third level of the north stands. A ‘fan’ sitting near the border of sections 301 and 302 apparently threw something towards the field.

I didn’t see that but I did see a number of other fans all stand and point at this kid. The usher saw what was going on, and gave the kid the universal ‘you are out of here’ gesture.

He was having none of that. He was young, arrogant and unrepentive. A police officer had to walk up and escort him out of the stadium.

Moral of the story: in Knoxville, you can get away with that nonsense. Everyone apparently throws stuff. Except maybe the visiting fans, I am waiting for confirmation that some roadkill was indeed thrown.

In Syracuse, we recycle, care about condiments and besides, the Clemson fans already ate all the road kill.

Completely different story,

Nope, none of that …….bombs, gun fire, riots or attacking players have not happened involving US concacaf games , those things have happened accross the Soccer Spectrum throughout the planet , not just S.A. and concacaf. I guess you didn’t remember the death to disco riot , the Riot at the Palace in Auburn Hills, or other violent incidents that have happened, to think it can’t happen here is just not smart, Point being you want to squash it right away so it doesn’t escalate or be considered ok. England had a terrible problem with fighting and hooligans, Through planning they have almost completely eliminated the problem.

Hey, thanks for calling me not smart. Man, I love debate when it includes personal attacks.

US sports riots have happened, yes, but NOWHERE near the scale we've seen in other countries, particularly South and Latin America. And I only used those because CONCACAF was used as a comparison.

I think you’re both right. It’s typically not bad here in comparison to other places...and it should be nipped in the bud. NBA Playoffs had a number of incidents last year which is something I don’t remember ever being much of a problem. Crack down on it and don’t let it become a thing.

That’s a bit of a stretch , saying a particular thought is not smart is a lot different then saying a person is not smart hell, I have thoughts that aren’t particularly bright on a regular basis. If you insist on taking it as a personal attack then be my guest, but it wasn’t.

I was at that game, I remember some conflict along the bench , I don’t remember any a Temple players entering the stands, I ll take SWC word for it , he is pretty reliable. Now Syracuse Blazer games in the old EHL… I think visitors were required to enter stands !!!!!
I remember that game too. I was sitting in section 208 (mother at the time worked at Manley). If I remember, an SU player was hit late out-of-bounds, over by our section. The refs threw a flag and ejected the Temple player. As the Temple player was walking across the field (to LOUD boos) he stopped midway and flipped off the crowd, which really incited the crowd.

Then as mentioned earlier, fans behind the Temple bench began throwing stuff onto the Temple bench. Temple players jumped up onto the railing and started swinging their helmets at the fans who were throwing just about everything. Got real ugly fast. Both coaches pulled their teams from the field and as the Temple team was going through the tunnel, fans started throwing beers, etc. again. A couple of Temple players climbed up into the stands and started swinging. Finally, the field was cleared.

After about 30 minutes or so, the teams came back out to finish the game. Before the restart, however, SU was flagged for two 15 yard unsportsmanlike penalties, which, as you can imagine, didn't thrill the fans. From then on, it was a continual LOUD boo through the end of the game. It's one of those weird moments you just don't forget.

That was many, many years ago, so some of my detail may be off a bit, but I believe it's a fairly close rendition of what happed that day. I also remember the picture the next day in the sports section of paper, show the Temple players in the stands swinging their helmets. Till this day, I still cannot find anything online related to this incident.

Never been a fan of the program on Rocky Top, Philip Fulmer just reminds me of a sleaze ball. Not surprised by this at all their fan base is jaded and think they should be where Bama is every year atop the SEC and contending for National Titles.

What did they fine A&M for their fans running onto the field? Like $100k. Double it for Tennessee and move on.

I watched the Tennessee game last night. Horribly uncomfortable watching a home teams band and cheerleaders run for cover at the end of the game. It looked like there were about a thousand bottles on the ground. Mostly water battles. Seemed to be coming from the student section.

And this is not an excuse, but the Tennessee fans were rightfully wound up by a series of fake injuries by ole miss trying to slow down Tennessee‘s hurry up offense. It was blatant as you’ll see.

Both issues need to be addressed.

Yep, the worst I’ve seen. Ole Miss was basically saying “ there nothing refs can do about it so we’re going to fake.

I loved running into him at a gas station outside of Knoxville 10+ years ago. He did a double take of the orange Syracuse shirt that I was wearing. ;)

Lane is the ultimate troll.

Alcohol and mob mentality were probably to blame to an extent.

The injury thing is easy. If the game is stopped because you are hurt, you are out until a change of possession occurs.
