UNC Ruling

There is a very good reason why UNC poached Roy from Kansas...he loves to cheat the Carolina way.

And I am very sure Roy knew all about their Academic program long before he took that job. Not everything is a secret amongst college coaches.

Of course he did. He was an assistant at UNC for 10 years before the Kansas job. I don't think he lost or stopped talking to all of his UNC connections during his time at KU

He graduated from NC and played on their basketball team.

Yeah I thought that was the case as I was just too lazy to go back and double check.

Delayed due to reconsiderations caused by FBI charging basketball coaches and exposing NCAA hypocrisy. They are now in a quandary on how to proceed, mostly because they have no idea where the FBI may take this investigation. They know they are in an extremely exposed position on many fronts.
Psssst! I love your avatar pic!

The NCAA is in a pickle. If UNC gets what amounts to a wrist slap in the current environment (FBI investigation, precedents set in other cases) I guarantee you there will be people out there (like Pitino) that will make holy hell for the NCAA. For this reason, I don't think UNC gets off light. MBB will get hit with something, as will Williams. Might not be a lot, but I don't think they skate. The ruling could surprise everyone. I think McCants' admissions will carry more weight than people think. Also, can you imagine all the bogus majors popping up around the country if the NCAA doesn't take a stance?

As far as SU or JB suing over the lost wins, I am of the belief that he will get them back at some point, just like PED State did. I don't think it's worth it to JB to fight that fight right now. He has 5 years left and wants to coach Buddy in relative peace and quiet. You can only go through that NCAA pressure cooker for so long. Besides, he knows who won those games.
Considering the FBI investigation into what amount to college payola, could they decide to investigate the NCAA for their picking and choosing punishments based on the impact of their punishments (or lack of) on NCAA income? If P5 schools are held to a much lower standard and have much lesser punishments than mid-majors, based on the NCAA losing money for not having say, UNC, or Kentucky etc in the tourney, isn't that tantamount to the NCAA being paid off to look the other way?

How do they lose money if they're not in the tourney? The CBS contract pays a fixed amount each year for the life of the contract. It doesn't have clauses that say they'll pay the NCAA less if any off a list of teams are not in it. It may affect things at renegotiation time, but that's hard to picture. And when you consider that the NCAA gets a combined $0.00 for the entirety of the D-1A football season and regular season bball, it's very hard to say there's any economic advantage in not whacking someone.

Sometimes it's hard to read articles about the UNC situation with a straight face, just because the whole thing is such a farce. The opening paragraph of the one you linked to says everything: "[UNC] could learn this week what action the NCAA will take in response to the school’s nearly 20-year academic scandal involving athletes."

Objective Observer: "So...there was an academic scandal...and it lasted almost 20 years?!"
NCAA: "Uh huh."
Objective Observer: "That's kind of a long time. Like, a REALLY long time."
NCAA: "Mkay."
Objective Observer: "And this scandal involved athletes? Ones that maintained eligibility to play basketball and won championships by virtue of their participation in these invalid courses?"
NCAA: "That seems to be the case."
Objective Observer: "Wow, that sounds like exactly the kind of thing the NCAA is supposed to monitor. You're going to hammer them, right?"
NCAA: "Uh...lemme get back to you"

"A 2014 investigation by Kenneth Wainstein, a former U.S. Justice Department official, revealed that more than 3,100 UNC students took the fake classes. His report said 47 percent of the students who took the classes were athletes — a number the university disputed — though athletes made up only 4 percent of the student body. And most of the athletes taking the classes were members of the football team and men’s basketball team."

"With its reputation in tatters, the school should have acted swiftly and sternly to punish its sports teams and coaches. Its refusal to do so means the NCAA is the only remaining hope of making UNC pay the price for nearly 20 years of wrongdoing."

Incredible:vomit:

Surely those "student-athletes" that made up the 47% just found those courses on their own, right...and were't purposefully steered there?

I usually find conspiracy theories to be ridiculous, but this thing is just plain as day.

Please tell me how giving these athletes higher grades and take BS classes to pass is much different than giving Fab Melo and co extension on papers or raising their grades? This should be easy. If wins aren't vacated I wonder if Cuse can go back and get Jim's back.

They’re going to get hammered. This is why there’s a lack of institutional control charge. This is the epitome of it.

Yeah, everything changed with that last notice of allegations and things definitely seem to be trending towards UNC getting some serious punishment now. Still, for some reason I just can't believe that's what's going to happen, until I see it.
