USF opens as a 5 point favorite

He certainly had the power to hire and fire. He also had the obligation (as we all do) to follow the orders of his superiors.

Why are we still talking about this? :bat:
Yeah, take it from someone who works in college athletics: the AD never has the final say on who stays or who goes in a department. There's always someone above him or her making the ultimate call.

You can get Syracuse +1.5 at the Wynn now. 94% of all dollars coming in Orange currently.

Oh, Wynn finally put it on the board. I was staying there this week for a conference. the game was completely off the board. I had to plunk down a few bucks at another sports book.

you would know, Jek. No matter who made the call, PP had to go. You don't miss out on a BCS bowl(granted an undeserved one) because you lost to Temple and survive that(and the 6-7 record that year, the G Tech bowl blowout, the 6 years of generally mediocre football etc)

Yeah, Wynn waited forever to open it. FWIW, besides Sagarin, you can add analytic guru Ed Feng who has Syracuse as a 4.5 favorite tomorrow. That's how wacky that opening +5 number was.

How many points bump does USF get for being home? 2 or 3 pts?

I hope Cuse brought the cool fans...going to be warm until the sun goes below the stadium deck.

Cantor directed Gross to fire him.

I love how people think Square Joe Public is either aware of or betting this game.

Home team is 3pts

Wow. Can we let the Marrone era rest - Marrone did what he was hired to do by bringing the program back to a level of respectability. Grob was the problem and was a Gross hire. Marrone was not a primary candidate for Gross but was overruled by the committee. I still blame Gross as the primary reason for the football program demise.

Regardless Marrone did bring the program back to respectability but he wasn't going to take the program any further because he didn't like recruiting, was overly stubborn and fought the establishment instead of working it to his advantage (I was a big supporter of Marrone in many ways).

Lest you forget Shafer was a Marrone hire. Marrone really paved the way for Shafer to be successful. However, Shafer's record is only 10-15 for first 2 years and now 13-16. At the end of 4 years to match Marrones record he has to go 12-9 from here on out.

Can Shafer do it? Given the McD era as OC - no way. Given the Lester era of OC - I'm encouraged. For me I certainly hope we not only match but do better than that.

So can we just let this rest and move on and go for the win on Sat?

Marrone took a program that was 10-37 over a 4 year span and turned it into a .500 program over his 4 year span, and was extremely close to going to bowl games in all 4 years. Anyone who doesn't appreciate what a significant improvement that is, is a dunce as far as I'm concerned.

There are things that Marrone deserves criticism for but one is not his turnaround of the program.

agree completely. Hard to argue with blowout wins over WVU and Louisville especially when his predecessor was losing to Akron and Miami, OH.

Pasqualoni was fired for one reason, and one reason only. The gargantuan ego of Dudley Gross.
I don't think you are correct. I believe that was the small one's decision.

Road team still bring refs OOC?

Usually, but not always. For example, I was just looking at the contract between Wyoming and Eastern Michigan (as one does) and it stipulates that the refs shall come from the home team's conference for their games in 2015 and 2016.

That part cracked me up for some reason. Well played

At least I can take some solace in that. I thought it looked like ACC refs for a game vs LSU and perhaps that rule had changed.

Definitely SEC refs for the LSU game. ACC replay officials, however. As long as they aren't old Big East refs tomorrow, I don't really care.

Marrone brought us Shafer. For that he should be getting the high five

Keep the line at +5 so the moneyline is better. Still baffled by this one.

the problems with the football program started way before gross. I don't think that marrone is a legit college football coach. some guys can make a career out of being a jerk (harbaugh) but marrone isn't good enough for that. I like shafer but he has to win. and I don't want to hear this crap about how marrone left shafer in a place to succeed. the roster was thin, and marrone success wasn't from his own recruits (nassib).

Great post.

Stop. Marrone got a lot more out of GRob's recruits--with a depleted roster--than GRob ever did. We were exponentially more competitive and better defensively Marrone's first year with most of the same principal players, and zero depth. In and of itself, that says a lot about Marrone's coaching aptitude.

Was he perfect? Far from it. But Marrone had a lot of uphill battles to fight, given that he took over what was arguably the worst major conference team in college football, including the negative stigma on the recruiting trail. He should be commended for what he accomplished here, picking the program off of the scrap heap, instead of being reviled for leaving under undesirable circumstances.

Now, there are also valid criticisms. His game coaching was questionable at times, but it is also important to note that he'd never been a head coach--so a learning curve was to be expected. That was partially offset by the staff being very good at game planning / strategy. We had a lousy situation with facilities, and some of the depth issues were also Marrone's doing. And there is NO QUESTION that his departure set the program back, that he didn't recruit very good offensive skilled players, and that the cupboard wasn't stocked for Shafer on offense.

But he changed the culture and did reasonably well. Looking at his .500 record and concluding that he was mediocre overlooks significant context, IMO. I don't get why some only point to the negative while simultaneously overlooking the positive impact he had.
