VA TECH Post Game

He is not a good player. He is at best an average player who is our best scorer out of a bunch of poor scorers. Good players don’t huck up 6+ 3 point attempts per game when they shoot 27% from distance.
Correct. I made a similar comment Saturday but must have been a little more harsh, because it got deleted.

Yeah, I think that will come across as harsh but I think it's accurate.

I'm not going to rip JJ. He's not a good defender. Easy. Okay. But, good teams can support a poor defender. Luka's defense was a joke at one time. Curry's defense has been a joke. Harden. Even LeBron gets ripped for being only an occasional, 'splashy' defender.

The problem with JJ is that he's relied upon to be the team's star, and he should/would really only be the third or fourth best player on a good team. That we don't have take over guys or guys who can more reliably create their own offense is not his fault. That he takes a lot of threes isn't really his fault. Who else can/will/should take those shots?

We have no offensive scheme other than iso or post banging. Not his fault. That he can average 18 points, low efficiency or not, in this schemeless scheme is something.

I hope we have him back, but surrounded by players who can help him to be a more efficient player. He makes tough plays. He doesn't shy away from (offensive) challenges. I can't see us buying enough portal talent to displace him, so yeah, i hope he's back. He's not The Problem.

good is a matter of opinion, he is relatively good, but needs players better than him around him. Thus not a ftanchise player which is the point of my comment. He is incapable of carrying a team. Our current roster has no such player.

Going to have to disagree. From an NBA standpoint those guys are all superstars. JJ is not. Even so Lebron and Curry have way better defensive metrics at the NBA level than JJ does in college.

We were so hellbent on sending Girard packing(myself included) because people said he wasn't an ACC player when in reality JJ has been a downgrade at that position. I cannot see him as a starting shooting guard on a winning team. 6th man super sub scorer in the right matchup is fine. Why people want a 28% 3 point shooter who struggles at the foul line as our two guard is beyond my comprehension.

The comparison was not to suggest JJ’s defense is on the same level as nba superstars. The point was simply that a team—at any level— can be good with a guard who isn’t a great defender. I noted nba guys because they’re recognizable and had well discussed reputations.

As for whether Starling could be a starting guard on a “winning team,” he has already been that. Unless you meant something different. A ‘championship level team,’ perhaps? No argument there. My point was that the flaws we see in JJ are exacerbated by his usage and lack of top level support.

Not going to litigate Girard. I don‘t remember a position on him leaving, but if I had one it would have been contingent upon getting a better replacement. I do know I was glad to get JJ as a transfer.
