Virginia Gameday...

that first qtr was big reason why wasn’t close. Plus uva coming off another lost to duke knew they were gonna come out to play and we would to but started very very poorly.

Finn has been underwhelming
Not totally there yet, but I agree somewhat. Thought his ability to bury the ball in close quarters would be a little more advanced than it has been thus far.

He’s been a massive part of this EMO unit though. He’s excelled there.

14 saves for Mark
But 44% not good enough against UVA. Loss certainly not his fault but he was not at his best.
Sloppy play is a killer for this team. I really believe that it is mainly due to youth but coaching could be an issue. Offense continues to be a bright spot but Spallina was pretty much invisible.

In spite of result, struggle at fogo, young defense and sloppiness can be improved for next year.

When elite attackmen and middies get wide open shots over and over within 5 - 10 feet of him really can't blame him at all for a lower save %

Yeah saying he has underwhelmed is pretty harsh. He’s only a freshman and has over 30 points from the midfield. It’s hard to ask for much more than that. As fans we are extremely lucky to get production like that from a first year player. This freshman class came in with huge expectations and has exceeded them. In no way does one of them deserve a lazy comment like that.

Tied for dead last in the ACC. Want a cookie?

i thought when johnny was in there fogo was good grant missed some gbs first time that hurt. But won 15 they won 19 a lot closer then has been against petey one of best. Thought defense and sloppy play was main result of this lost. Clary is good n want him back but don’t think should of started right away. Last time he barely made it first couple mins. But defense was meshing well last couple games then inserted him back n they looked confused. Would of kept dwan there and ease clary back by having him on wing or out of box. Defense looked lost and just watched guys with ball while their dudes cut to net wide open. Which thought that’s where coach needs to tell them stay with your guy unless ur slide guy. They give way to much room for guys never on their hands when pass comes. Good teams can not let them do what they want or get into their offense. Also after playing consecutive shot clocks can we please try a zone. I bet no team would expect that from us since we have never ever done it once this year. Offense was def able to score on their defense but try to force passes to much and made lazy passes when not even dude on them.

Also mark is fantastic and solid goalie and big reason doing what have this year no doubt. But he needs to play his angles better and stop flopping leaning to one side. Sometimes feel he guess instead of instincts or exploding to ball. Not saying blame him at all but against these top teams he needs to stay 50% or better but his defense also has to play better. Going for sticks vs teams like dame duke or uva is not gonna work 95% of time as dudes are very strong powerful and crafty have to play body and stop body in tracks. Can’t say this coaches fault for those things as can repeat over and over but if kids don’t listen what can ya do. But this game showed that faceoffs at times is issue(plus wing play) but isn’t totally downfall of this team. The defense also has to get stops in big moments. Very young team and improved no doubt and loads of talent and potential making next year looking bright. But still decent amount of work to be done on defense and wings and gbs.

Also notice when do battle for ground ball two of our guys both go for dudes hands n sticks or both try to box out instead one guy take man other take ball. They did not come out to start this game ready to play. Box score for each qtr that first was main cause of margin. As after first was very even in scoring. They really better come out hott against duke like first meeting and not let them get back into game. Also stopping naso will be difficult. Truely is win or go home either way.

What young defense? A lot of these guys have been around for a while now. It's pretty clear. We don't have the defensive players to compete in the ACC. When Aviles and Clary are touted to be your best, you have a problem.

Disappointing result. Had hoped for a closer game but the defense just a huge letdown today. The amount of ball watching and happy feet was bad. Sliding early, not matching up, and a good chunk of times just looking lost. Gave Virginia shooters a lot of high quality looks. Mark probably could have had one or two more saves but not much he can do when guys are that wide open.

Who would have thought that we didn't get enough of Richusa taking draws today? He was able to do a good job against Lasalla, though had some trouble at times retaining possession after winning the draw. I see looking over the box score that even Dwan was credited with winning a draw, with Richusa picking up the groundball.

The offense is what it is. They're gonna score when they get possessions, it's just getting and keeping those possessions. Not exactly sure why they kept trying to force passes inside, Virginia was waiting and would quickly collapse forcing the turnover. The second line felt invisible today. Rhoa had a couple shots, Cook didn't register a single stat, and Birtwistle a goal on the EMO.

I still like our chances against Duke, unless we get the same type of defensive play we got today.

Stop. Look at the competition (that we’re losing too).

Young cause only two have gotten real time before this year (cacameo, clary) and cacameo is sophomore and clary is jr but has been hurt for most of those first two years. Just cause on team for year or two is still completely diff from playing in games in this conference and D1. It’s diff feel speed then practice of course. They are a young defense also haven’t played much with each other before this year. Yes will give at times look horrible(today being one) but they are young defense and still learning as played brutal schedule for most of year. Only losing to top 10 teams only. Plus think inserting clary throw off guys as sure matchups and roles change now that he was in. Think would kept dwan in as done very well and defense was seeming to mesh well together. Yes game was not as hoped but somewhat kinda went thought could happen for how good uva is n coming off a lost.

believe box score was 1st-uva 7 cuse 2
2nd- uva 3 cuse 3
3rd- uva 5 cuse 3
4th- uva 4 cuse 4
so besides first was even in scoring which if didn’t give a 6-0 start to lead might of gone diff if wasn’t digging out of big hole shooting themslves in foot more then uva besting them least one offense side. Plus 3 of their goals came off those unforced poor horrible turnovers on simple pass n catch.

olexo held conner shell scoreless yes had 2 assist but both of them were from dudes ball watching n not keeping eye on their own guy.

defense caused 10 turnovers think i read. The poor play in first was main dagger. They battled but everytime got momentum there goes poor turn over or poor call by refs. Which are back breakers when at critical times.

Those may be the stats, but you have to remember that UVA played differently with the lead. I think they would have outscored Cuse more in the 2nd half if the game had been closer.
