Virginia Postgame

Devo said on the radio this past week that the teams he was on would be fighting at practice regularly- that’s how competitive they and the practices were. I cannot picture this team doing that.
It's been reported a multitude of times that in JB's later years he didn't want to coach any more Devos. He wanted compliant guys who made his life easy.

Personally, I think the mistake JB made was equating guys who were off-the-court headaches (e.g. Louis McCroskey) with guys who were on-the-court dawgs (e.g. Trevor Cooney).

If you look at his last few rosters it was evident he largely eschewed both of those kinds of players. We haven't been a tough team in a long, long time.

Are we sure Devo didn't misspeak? I'm thinking instead of "practice" he meant "Chucks."

I think AAU ball has killed the Cooney's at the top level of high school and prep basketball. Its not rewarded to be an in the trenches type player. You're starting to see some resurgence with the portal because players who got overlooked for not being AAU ball hogs are getting a chance to shine at the lower levels and then move up.

On Saturday, my daughter had a dance competition that morning, and it didn't get done until right after 11 CST [noon eastern]. When I got outside, I slapped the game on Sirius XM -- I'd only missed the first 6 minutse or so, and we were up something like 10-2, but then promptly gave up a 14-2 run. Awesome.

So as I drove home, I listened to most of the first half in the car. The broadcast team was from UVa [the only broadcast I could find]. Their color guy made a comment that was something like [paraphrasing]: "when we play teams like this, all it takes is to make the extra pass, and the defense breaks down and we carve them up. This is too easy."

Spoke volumes.

UVa went on a 12-0 run without us taking a timeout. And that was it.

I still dont know why they just dont cut Red loose now. Rip off the damn band aid and start building this program back up brick by brick.
IF, and it's a big IF, they cut him loose before the end of the season, I predict it will happen after the 2/21 game vs UNC. Only three games will be left in the season. The first two are on the road and then the last game of the season is home vs. Pitt, and Cuse will have a full week after UNC until the next game. That's assuming Duke and UNC are both losses and at least one of Cal/SMU. It's all over but the crying at that point.

No matter what, there might only be seven home games left in Red's regime at the most, because there is a chance we are one of three that don't make the ACCT. But, that's hard to gauge because five teams have only two wins and we have four. And we still play two of those five.

That’s such an indictment of our defense and offense since good teams like Virginia, UNC and uh, Boston College use the extra pass to regularly pick us apart, leading to open threes or driving the lane with ease while our offense is pretty much incapable or unwilling to do the same.
