Was that a competent offense?

No shy and Troy Henderson didn't play. Most likely red shirting. We will see injuries and other factors could change that... But that's what it looks like right now

Bam, just want to weigh in on this quickly--especially in light of Shy's compelling story in the paper last week. I know that this outcome seems disappointing, that your son is an incredible athlete and a competitor, so he doesn't want to redshirt. But consider the bigger picture:
  • This year we have our starting LBs set, and a group on the two deep who could play a ton of minutes these next two years
  • Shy now gets a chance to learn his defensive assignments, get a year in a collegiate S&C program, let the game slow down, and space himself out from the other players ahead of him on the depth chart.
  • Shy also gets a chance to get two full years [last summer, this year, and next summer] of academic credits under his belt before he gets onto the field--which will really enable him to get a solid foothold academically, to make things easier down the road
Again, I know that Shy is a competitor and a stud athlete, and that he probably doesn't want to redshirt. But I honestly feel like this could be the best outcome in terms of him maximizing his collegiate career. Now, he can challenge to be a 3-4 year starter, without having to "waste" a year where he probably wouldn't start over a group of more experienced players. Win-win.

Bambrewer--this isn't a "failure" by any means. This is a good way to maximize his career, long term. I'll be rooting for Shy big time as his career unfolds, and I think it will be great to have him be a major contributor for 4 years, as opposed to a guy who might not see the field much as a true frosh.

I have mentioned these things to shy to try and keep his spirits up. I think he knows deep down that having more time to get ready and practice will benefit him in the future. Just doesn't go a long way for today. Like I said he is going to work harder and push more to be ready in case someone gets hurt or if he gets to a point to over take a person above him and as far as I am concerned that will be the best thing that can come out of this. Even if he doesnt get a chance to play this year working harder will only make him better down the road

I can't help but think this will also maximize his chances for making the league, which I assume is the ultimate goal!

Selfishly I get much more excited to see him for 3-4 years than 2-3 years, though I am sure that is of little solace to him. But he could be reminded of the first point to make him feel better ;)

I have told him that. I think it is less about what he knows is right long term and more about wanting to be out there. Like I said there is alot of stuff he told me that makes it much harder for him to be in the spot he is in. I dont blame him for wanting to be out there now. But I do understand and tell him it is what is best for him and the team long term and now.

You know even the dog in your picture looks depressed

If you had to spend your time with this guy you'd probably look that depressed too. :D
