Washington Huskies

Well, in 1986, all they said about JB was, “he can recruit, but all does at practice is roll
the balls out”.

Coaches tend to get better with experience.
No question. My post was a response to the “Hopkins is a better coach” narrative. I would rather he take his lumps elsewhere, like he’s doing right now.

The same people behind that narrative think he’s never coming back. At this point, he may not have a choice.

I think he will be our Roy Williams...BTW he is having a better year than Roy...

I think UNC is about to go on a run. And I think they’re going to beat us.

After losing to BC with Cole:confused: at home?
His first game back. I wouldn’t be surprised if they beat FSU and Duke this week. I think they’ll at least split.

I have a feeling the Heels are going to be a real headache on Selection Sunday. The committee is going to bend over backwards to get them in.

Hop is legit.
Hop is also not doing a good job this year.
That team should be better and the fact they may not finish .500 is amazing.
I hope we get bracketed with them in the NIT if we don’t make the NCAAT.

There’s no excuse for losing to BC at home and they really weren’t good the first 9 games with him. They lost to UVA by 9. I’m not sure what some are seeing in them that makes you think they can turn it around.

I think we are going to go on a run and we are going to beat them by 5+.

They are not close to Duke. They don't shoot the 3 well and they don't have the quality of big men.

I hope you’re both right.

This season has been absolutely brutal for Hop. UW had aspirations of being a Sweet 16 team, and now they may not even make the NIT.

Hop hasn’t been very good, but a lot of the troubles have been out of his control, like Quade Green being suspended and Jaden McDaniels looking like a complete bust.

As a husky fan, I’m over this season. I’m looking ahead. What bothers me is the future isn’t looking all that bright. Hop has no one signed to next seasons class, and we likely lose our two five star kids.

The fan base has really turned on him. Most fans have knee jerk reactions. Everyone was calling him the next greatest coach last year. Now he is one of the worst. He is probably somewhere inbetween.

I don’t see Hop going back to Syracuse, but I will say this. If you guys are tired of JB, why would you want Hop? He is an extension of JB. 2-3 zone with a pretty stagnant offense. If you want a younger JB with a ton of energy, then Hop is your guy.

Serious question: How many technicals has McDaniels gotten this season? I check in on the Huskies now & again & it seems like every time I do, the announcers mention him getting another T. They usually seem to be for taunting, is that accurate?

Just based on memory, I think five. And they are all immature.

He flicked a kids ear.

He picked up one when he wasn’t even in the game. Threw the ball at the UCLA kids head from the bench.

I think Hop handled McDaniels really poorly. I think the leash was way too long with him. It wasn’t until recently that Hop started benching him. Up until about a week ago he was playing about 35 minutes a game regardless how bad he played. I think Hop gave minutes based on star level rather than performance.

That’s an interesting point and another difference between Hop and Jimmy. Jimmy can be very tough, especially on young players no matter how highly rated they are (ie: Paul Harris). And we all know how Jimmy feels about comments about short or long leashes... They really did balance each other out well.

Hop seems like a guy who could promise a kid great playing time etc during recruiting and is just too loyal to his own promises that he gives a kid the benefit of the doubt. I don’t know just my initial thoughts if the highly touted player is not playing well and still playing a lot? Live and learn for hop

Question - why does Hop have no recruits for 2021? Clearly the two 5 stars have been likely 1 and dones from the get go. And Hop is a proven terrific recruiter. After the success of the past two seasons (when the groundwork would have been done on the 2021 class) and a pretty clear path to major PT given those highly likely departures, it doesn't add up. I would have expected him to have lined up multiple quality recruits. Not necessarily 5 stars as they both had specific reasons, but quality 4 stars.

He's missed on a few.

To me Hop is one of a select few to be considered at JBs end. I agree the success he's had so far is the newness factor of Hop running JBs system in a mediocre Pac12, but in game management and game planning for your next opponent are learned traits that get better with experience. He has yet to coach up his team beyond expectations. There is plenty of time for him to improve, but if replacements are being sought after today, Hop should not be the only one on the list.

I think Hop's biggest flaws have been he has too much loyalty. He had a ton of loyalty to McDaniels, as well as his first recruits, Naz Carter and Hamier Wright. As the season has progressed, I think he has learned to play the best players, rather than the kids who had more stars next to their name in high school. What we need to understand is that Hop has very little head coaching experience and is still learning.

He swung and missed on some big recruits. Had some unfortunate misses like Beachamp who chose to skip college, he was suppose to be a shoe in at UW. After missing on others, I think Hop has chosen to save those scholarships for the following class. Also, in state class for 2020 is one of the weakest in a long time. I think only one guy from Washington (Beachamp) was top 100. Whereas 2021 is loaded for the state of Washington. If everything lines up, Hop could have a monster class for 2021. Jackson Grant a fringe top 50 recruit has already signed. The hope is to land Banchero (top 5 recruit), Nolan Hickman (should be top 50 recruit by his senior season), Shane Nowell (should be top 100 by senior season) and Peyton Watson (top 50 recruit). I think UW likely gets Nowell and Hickman. I think UW is still the favorite for Banchero, but this season hasn't helped our chances. I think Watson is either going to UW or Arizona. If everything goes as planned, Hop could land a top 10 class.

I think Hop is a good coach right now, but jury is out on him. I think he would be a fine replacement for JB, but if people aren't enjoying JB's style of play, Hop isn't the guy you want. He is an extension of JB. Just a younger and more energetic version of him. The style of play on the court will look almost identical. Recruiting will obviously be different, but a lot will be the same with Hop.
