Was also working at the same bar as well. Two of the three main TVs had to be on the Sabres game. ugh. The 'Cuse game was on the third TV which is a tough angle for me to see from behind the bar. Sabres had to stay on though even though they were down like 11-2. Go Devils...Anyway kinda' disappointed by the Syracuse support here in Rochester. Moved here back in April and worried about this. Seems a lot of people here either don't like Syracuse or or just dont care about it. The city or the basketball team.

Hopefully the bandwagon grows as we keep winning. And cheers to those four people, on of them glued to the 'Cuse TV because I bet him we'd win by 10 in the end because we had depth.

Agree. I can understand the value of trying to cultivate NYC, but it always bugs me that more isn't done to grow the Orange effect out this way. We are an hour down the thruway, very easy access in the big picture, with a high upside for adding to turnout.

Funny part is, when I was at Brockport and we won the title, I had a class right before tip-off and the whole class was psyched about the game. So the interest does exist, it's just not being effectively pulled out.

Tell me you skipped that class!! I think some of it might be that Rochester has a inferiority complex against Syracuse for its national recognition due to said basketball team. I say that as a newcomer but that's the way I see it. I came froma small town that embraces Syracuse athletics and it was over 2 hours away. How is Syracuse interest in Albany? I know it was great for two games in 03 but the rest of the time?

Syracuse does well in Binghamton and Utica...need to extend the footprint out a bit. I moved away a couple years ago from Albany, but it has fairly low fan support for Syracuse. Albany is really a "pro sports" town.

Are you a Devils fan? They have a strong offense this year, if they can improve on D they might make a run in the playoffs. At times on defense they look like a Benny Hill skit.

Rochester very much has a SUPERIORITY complex vis a vis Syracuse. In many ways it is culturally better and also consider itself to be a pro town. Pro soccer does so well they have a new stadium just for the team. It has always been a HUGE hockey team, both the Sabres and Amerks. They would rather watch the Bills than the Orange. That is who they are as a city. Also, Albany couldn't care less about SU. The follow NYC pro sports.

Albany isn't bad ...lived there and got a degree there. I never had to travel much to find SU on TV. Albany is all a very big Boston city ... they love their patriots and red sox. But they also love Siena

Rochester is a great place to visit. Really enjoy it. But, if they're claiming superiority based on pro soccer and minor league hockey? Well, alrighty then. Hahaha

I would LOVE to see Syracuse play a road game or two every year in Buffalo/Rochester/Albany (at First Niagara/Blue Cross/Times Union) against Niagara/Canisius/UB/St Bonnie/Siena/UAlbany. It will kill the "they never leave home" argument, while playing in arenas that would be mostly Syracuse fans anyway. And more importantly it might help start building a fan base in those three cities.

Once we get to the ACC and our guaranteed revenues improve, this would be a great idea.

There are 7 Rochester area colleges; two pro teams in Buffalo that are as close as SU -- naturally SU isn't going to get all the attention the way it does in Syracuse. Given all the options, there is plenty of attention to SU basketball.

As for cultural smugness in Rochester, it isn't what it used to be.

My Dad was from Rochester. I'm Syracuse born & bred. My view: Rochester = Athens (in their minds) & Syracuse = Sparta. Kills them that the culturally inferior 'Cuse (fewer colleges & less high tech industry) is more recognizable nationally thanks to SU. Of course they gravitate to Bills & Sabres because that is of a "higher quality". (Although they see Buffalo in general as Sparta-like as well.)

And there's your classic Greek historical reference for the day.

And yes I loved my Dad. He was smart enough to move.

No. They have a terriffic vibrant arts community, a number of excellent colleges, high tech jobs, etc. Its a community that is very proud of itself, unlike Syracuse, in general.

I grew up in Rochester, and the majority of people there root for SU, though you won't see as much outward fanaticism as you do for the Bills or Sabres. A lot of that has to do with SU being private. If SU were SUNY Syracuse, you would see more expansive statewide support. That is pretty much a rule everywhere - when I lived in Asheville, there were 7 UNC fans for every Duke fan, and now I live in Atlanta, and it's the same ratio for Georgia - Ga Tech.

Rochester is very much an SU town but since IT IS an hour away it is not 100% SU. What do you expect? Sabres and Bills will take preference. At least the Bills run their preseason camp here (builds huge fan base) and the Sabres reupped as parent club to the Amerks, again rebuilding the fan base. If SU would dane to play a game a year in Rochester say rotating through Bona, Niagara and Cansisus, then the fan base would be even larger and maybe even add a few fannies in the dome. And maybe even for both football and basketball. But then SU seems to feel they don't need to do that.

There are loads of Syracuse fans in nearby Brockport--probably the most common shirt seen on campus or in Lowes or in ... We are here, but why go to a bar to watch the game?

No one cares dude.

adk, where'd you go? Shooters in Fairport usually is packed with Orange, it's where the alumni club used to officially meet. If that's too far out any Hooligans/Distillery/MacGregors/Monroe Ave dive I've even been has SU front and center.

Rochester is fine but not much of a sports town. There are no major sports there which is why they have to drive an hour each way (Est or West) to get to a major sports team. There is no question that people who live there are a little resentful of our sports.

No it wouldn't. Anything east of the Mississippi is a home game.

Absolutely true, thanks for reminding me that its a little more than an hour's drive to watch the NFL/NHL/college hoops/football in person whenever I feel like it. Guess we should cancel the mass suicide scheduled for later tonight.

I lived in Rochester for a bit. You see a ton of Sabres/Bills gear, but I never found it difficult to find people to talk Syracuse sports with.

The one thing I found incredibly odd was that almost without exception every Sabres fan was a HUGE Sabres fan, but knew almost nothing else about the NHL. It was very strange - they would know where others Sabres were in the NHL, but other than that the rest of the league might as well not have existed. Small sample size, but it seemed to be the case with everyone at work and most of the people I talked to about hockey (since I didn't like the Sabres it was kind of annoying).

I've never been able to understand Rochester. There are SU fans there, but a lot less than I would have thought. They were all about Buffalo sports and their Amerks. I get why Buffalo doesn't care about Syracuse BBall. They are a pro town. Rochester is a wannabe pro town, and that's about the closest I can come to why they don't care about college anything.

I dont know know where this inferiority/superiority complex talk comes from regarding Rochester, but I just dont see it. I have never heard of such talk either way. But I can guarantte you that there are a huge number of SU fans in Rochester. SU gets alot of coverage in the newspaper as well as tv news coverage. There is a massive amount of interest in Rochester regarding SU fb and moreso bb. I live here and have grown up here, for the most part.

Agreed. Rochester is a huge SU town. I grew up there and SU games were always on TV. It's true that it's largely a pro town and it's very much a hockey town, but with more than 1 million people in the metro area it has a big base of Orange fans.

The only D1 sport in Rochester is RIT hockey. Ask Tiger fans if Rochester doesn't care about SU sports -- you'll get a tirade from them.

I was working at a bar in Gates

I love that idea, and wish SU would embrace it. I had a lot of fun back in November 2003 when we played St. Bonaventure at Blue Cross Arena. At the end of the day, what's better than SU hoops followed by a delicious and artery-clogging Garbage Plate?
