We don't pass the ball

that refereeing was atrocious...i think

for me it seemed like they called phantom fouls all game long...the slightest hint of a foul drew a whistle...

or was it me????
These big refs seem to intentionally blow the whistle the other way in these early season games. But my lord we can’t use that as any excuse. We STUNK

Other than Copeland nobody on the team seems willing to share the ball. Judah's refusal to pass gets Joe antsy and forcing shots. Tough mindset to change for JB.

Passing will come with familiarity, imo. I won’t pretend it’s not a concern but it can be fixed naturally, without heavy handed intervention. The team lacks chemistry right now. Hopefully that chemistry and trust will build. It should. And that will lead to better movement and passing.

I mean...I dont really care about the outcome of the game...it was just weirdly called...a lot of very slight things were whistled...makes for horrible viewing IMO

Just in case you wanted to add this back

Look, I've felt for a while that JB hasn't coached offense particularly well going on some years now. To a certain extent he could get a semi-productive offense having veteran players and shooting on the floor.

We don't really have veteran players, and we don't have a lot of shooting.

There's nothing to fall back on other than hope that some of the new guys are better at iso or flash some creativity.

The biggest problem is not passing...its shooting. Symir was our best outside shooter tonight. SYMIR!!!
I honestly am not sure how we are going to score this year.
Shooting is directly related to shot quality directly related to ball movement and passing leading to QUALITY shots

Let’s face it. We are gonna see a ton of 3 guard lineups. Symir needs to be in there, we know JG will get 32+mpg and Mintz will still play a lot. Not sure if that means more m2m or what, but it’s gonna happen

JB very quickly is going to start Symir at PG.
Mintz off the bench.
Brown is going to get minutes and if Benny's shot does not markedly improve quickly, a lot of minutes.
Bell is going to get a lot less minutes.
Did Jesse ever visit the weight room? Got out muscled by D2 kids.
Not happening. We have a tough enough time recruiting high value targets without sitting them. These guys can be divas. Very few highly rated guys are like BW.

I don’t think so, that would be an incredibly small lineup. Symir will just play any minutes that Joe or Mintz aren’t on the court, can’t imagine any of them playing the back of the zone.

Any offensive set/rotation that has Benny waiting for a pass at the 3 point line needs to be scrapped or adjusted. Unless he's setting a pick he should never be near the 3 point line.

Yep, Benny and Judah should be praticing "pick & pop" and "pick & roll" every day.

Even the last 2 years when we based the whole team on shooting we didn’t have passing. Joe was the PG and is clearly not a pass first. This is not the GS Warriors who pass the ball 5-7 times each trip down the court. We are lucky if we get 3. It’s all iso all the time with Jim.

Should/will either start over Mintz?
Or move JG to the bench?
No Jim is in a tough spot.but unless Mintz and Joe start to play well together we will have another losing record.

Pull Bell insert Copeland.

I hope so but I think the interest in passing and facilitating is a mindset that is not so easily developed. I think it should improve as all the new pieces play together more, but I also don't remember many teams that have become better sharers as the season progressed. Score first guys don't suddenly become facilitators.

We don’t have a Steve Nash on this team and won’t. No argument there. And I don’t see Mintz averaging more than 4 assists per game. I’m bummed about that because summer reports, to me, indicated he was a complete package. BUT I can see our total assists as a team progressing to a respectable number. Symir and Copeland are willing passers. I know there’s the Girard elephant (a skinny elephant, not a fat one) in the room, but I wouldn’t be shocked by either or both averaging double digit minutes this year. They might be enough to fix the passing issue, if….. if we can find lineups that fit the puzzle pieces together.

I'm gonna wait and see but my first impression of mintz watching part of snhu was not good at all

We don't need a Point God. I think Mintz and Joe play well together. Way too early to be concerned

And unlike when Rony, Stevie, DC, Billy, and Sherm etc were here, we aren't playing aggressive defense.
We used to get turnovers for breakaway dunks. We pushed the ball up the floor, denied the next pass.
But after the 1st probation, JB came up with his zone and except for a brief time the program has slowly gone downhill.
Except the last 8 years it has gone faster.

The zone is a great weapon when played well, and for two decades it gave us an advantage over "better" teams and allowed us to get to a number of Final Fours we didn't have the personnel for. The aberration was recruiting top of the class guys like Billy Owens and Derek Coleman and Pearl Washington, not the merely good recruiting. We have always done well with "good not great" players with the occasional star mixed in...

Look at our championship team. Even Anthony wasn't a top ranked player when we recruited him, he shot up the rankings after committing. Forth and Edelin were the only other ranked guys in their class on that team. (Using RSCI final rankings from that time)

Syracuse history is filled with good players developed over time. You are wishing for a Golden Age of Syracuse ball that never really happened.

We've had six 30 win teams since 1980, and 4 of them came during what you are referring to as our post probation decline period. 3 of those teams didn't have Carmelo Anthony. :)

This isn’t the first time I’ve heard this but that isn’t true at all, he absolutely was ranked top 5 before we signed him.

Gmac, Warrick, Duany, and McNeil were all ranked along with Melo, Forth and Edelin.

Feel free to double check my work... My memory said those guys were all ranked low top 100. I only looked quickly because I was trying to find a "time lapse" of Anthony's ranking...

They used to publish pre junior year and pre summer season rankings in addition to the final ranking you see here. I was hoping to get proof of Anthony's quick rise to the top.

Maybe SWC, bees or someone else who was tuned into recruiting back then could weigh in or show archived old rankings?

EDIT: I missed McNamara

Melo jumped up after he destroyed Lenny Cooke at the ABCD camp.

Yeah, the guys were def lower top 100, but still rated better than a lot of the guys we’ve gotten the past few years.
