West Coast Trip Game 1 PostGame

No clue a game was on. My west coast buddies lit up my phone around 11:20 talking about finally scoring and embarrassing. Had no idea what they were talking about this morning until I checked I here

I'm starting to think you don't pay attention to the schedule anymore. This seems to be your go to post after every single game. I think we get the point.

I did not watch this game. Just too late.
But can anyone explain why yet again Kyle Cuffe is at the bottom of the rotation.
The box score says he played 8 minutes, scored 6 points, had 2 rebounds and the games only block.
In a game where you would think his high energy, not to mention defense, would be at a premium he was practically ignored. They started down 25-2 for goodness sake.
This is one of the many reasons that I dont understand Reds coaching style.
What has Cuffe done to be treated like a yo yo?
And why does Elijah Moore, our frosh, only get five minute?
Both of these guys were doing so much with more playing time a few games ago, now they just make cameo appearances.
Seriously, why would either of these guys come back next year?
Reads to me like if Carlos came out we don't score. Red obviously isn't sitting JJ.

We were down 17-0 and Cuffe came in, got a block and scored our first points. He played aggressively. When he entered, he became the first player to do anything that resembled off-the-ball action, cutting as if he were part of an actual basketball play.

Unfortunately, his game still isn’t polished, and he makes mistakes as often as he makes good plays.

Carlos had a good showing. Hit some threes and generally played as if he had some determination. Took good shots. I didn’t pay attention to him on defense though. JJ did sit. jJ didn’t do much of anything in the first third of the game. I think Red sat him and when he came back, he—and the whole team—were more effective.

Wow Eddie played the most of anyone on both teams - 38 minutes. JC made every shot -he was 6 for 6 including two 3’s (but was just 2 for 4 from the free throw line). The team, other than JJ, actually shot very well 55.6% (20 for 36) if you subtract JJ’s bad shooting night (3 for 16). We were also 41.7% (5 for 12) again subtracting JJ’s 1 for 7 numbers. Sadly, a bad time for JJ to have had a poor game. Odd how Eddie seems to play better in the 2nd half of games.

That’s all I have other than noting what a total fiasco we were for the first 9 minutes of the game when we were losing 25-2. We outscored them the remainder of the game over the last 31 minutes 59 to 45. We blew this game big time in the first 9 minutes.
A fun drinking game might be to do a shot every time we commit a turnover, give up a layup or a wide open 3.

Last night you would have been unconscious before we scored.

Fun times, indeed.

JJ was 3 for 16 and scored 7 points in 34 minutes of play. No assists, 4 rebounds.

Maybe he should have sat for a few minutes if for no more reason than to recharge.

As I said before, both Cuffe and Moore should already be looking at transferring.
For whatever reason, neither can expect any kind of consistent playing time here.
Why start him and then he only plays 5 minute?
Red has ruined Moore, he is light years worse than early this year.
No confidence at all which is bizarre considering how he played early.
He hasn’t been taught a damn thing here, except to second guess everything and play like he is afraid of breaking something.

And by Reds own admission, Cuffe is his best defender and most high energy player he has. And by far our best foul shooter. And not a bad offensive player, one of the few who can drive to the basket. And reportedly a real leader on the team and a tireless worker.
Yet, he cant get off the bench while others like Bell (20 minute, 6 points) get more minutes, and don’t defend,
It is maddening and frankly what kind of message does this send to the rest of the team

By this point in the season, most teams have a genuine rotation and players can count on how many minutes they can reasonably play.
Not this team. It is like every game he throws a different set of players in the game and hopes it will work. This rotation bore no resemblance to our last win against Notre Dame.

Say what you want about JB at the end, he would have figured out by now a rotation and how to maximize his players abilities.

He had one great game, in a loss, and not much else. His defense is awful and he’s very limited on offense. I don’t think he’s very good at this level. Another swing and miss by the staff. Maybe a couple of years he can be serviceable but he can’t be on the court against better teams.

I agree I think he is getting a lot of respect from one game but your last line about being on the court against better teams could literally be said about ever member of the team including JJ.

If that is the case, then why in the hell is he starting. And then yanked in 5 minutes?
How about starting one of your better players? Maybe then we don’t start games in deep holes? Red just makes it so much harder for the team to succeed

When JJ made that great drive to cut the margin to six with 3:34 to go, I felt we had a chance. But, once again the lack of a go to guy really hurt us. I hate saying this, but we might have won this game last year with the ball in Judah's hands.

Also this wasn't the first game this year that our losing margin was less than the margin of points off turnovers. We continue to shoot ourselves in the foot. And it's nearly everyone. Seven different guys had at least one turnover, and what doesn't show up in the box score is the bad shots attempted. Even Chris Bell, who has been shooting the ball well, had that badly missed air ball.

Call it bad coaching or less talented guys trying to force things way below their skill level, but it's extremely noticeable and frustrating. But, they were able to do a few good things to keep it within reason.

That said, Jaquan Carlos had by far his best game of the season. Props to him. And Cal doesn't have as much talent as Stanford.

If I was Red, I'm not even sure what I would do about the bad starts. He switched up the starting lineup and Freeman got hurt. Lucas Taylor has had some good games and others he disappears. And they try running some plays for Choppa but he ends up missing the threes. They need to find a way to get him some better looks. Hopefully Saturday night goes better.

The unfortunate thing is that even with different players next year I do not see anything changing. Just do not see Red as a coach that will improve the program. The school will not make a change and fans will continue to stop following and supporting the program.

This is a depressing but likely outcome. No one at SU has the stones to do the right thing.

Red isn't a good coach but it's mostly about our talent. We are really weak. I don't care who would be coaching. Maybe we have a win or two more but it's doubtful. We don't have a single NBA kid on the team other than Donnie. I give the kids credit for trying but they just don't have the skills to compete with good teams.

We are really weak MENTALLY. That's on the coach.
This team is not great talent, but it's not Patriot League level players, either.
They just have no character. They do have talent. Just terrible decisions and no discipline.

It's clear as day at this point.

JJ can't be our go to guy if he comes back next year.
I want JJ back, but I 100% agree. He can't be the guy. We need to match him with a center who can make up for blown defense, a go-to PG, a wing who can score at three levels and defend at a high level, Donnie/Sadiq at pf.

I found the Stanford student section taunts down right respectful. The worst they came at us with were “who are you?” And “those are the ugliest shoes ever”. You could indeed hear individual taunts like you are siting next to them

Nerds

At no point was Stanford not comfortably in control of that game despite whatever "comeback" Syracuse mounted.
