What are Babers' strengths as a HC?

You could say that about every SU Football coach going back 50 years.

Maybe it's not the coach?

Maybe it's something in the water.
It’s really hard to find recruiting data for the 90’s, so I’m not sure how you able to make the assessment going back 50 years. I guarantee you if they used the metrics they used today, there would be many top 40 classes in the late 80’s and into the 90’s. There was some really good teams during that time.

Michael Owens was a parade all American.

Our depleted DL held them to 17 points, we could have won had we not missed a FG, went 3 and out like 6 times, and got stuffed at the 1 twice to kick a FG
Right, and called a pitch out play that lost yardage when they were 3rd and goal on the one yard line.

At some point he needs to start recruiting better. Sure, there have been a few gems like Tucker, Cisco, Williams, Deuce, etc, but overall the talent level and depth just isn’t there.

Recruiting has improved since he got here, I read on here all the time.

Well, that isn't a very good answer. Someone could say that about anyone. He has a tough job and it's easy to have enemies with a job like that. It seems, if he was a bad guy, that would have come out after 6 years.
Fair enough. Many of us have sources very much "in the know" that we choose not to divulge. I stand behind my comment about him.

If the guy made better coaching decisions, then I couldn't care less about how he personally acts. If Bill Belichick wanted to come here and coach next year, I'd take him in a heart beat.

In 9 years of being in the ACC Pitt has made 7 bowls with 1 year being 2020 where they would have went to one going 6-5, then one year they went 5-7. They will probably make one this year so they will 8 out of 9 possoble bowls. In that same time we have made 1 bowl with dino going into a second while Narduzzi will have made 6 after this year.

We should hold dino to the same standard. There is no reason not to go 6-6 every year with going 3-1 OOC every year and just needing to go 3-5 in conference. To recruit to Pittsburg isn’t that much better then it is to recruit here. To recruit to BC isn’t much better besides Catholic leftovers from ND and I guess living in a big city. If dino can’t string together two-3 bowl seasons after this then we need to find someone who can

My issue with Dino is that I think that the minute he gets a better offer he is gone. I don't believe we have ever seen his wife or family members involved with Syracuse. Maybe that's just how they roll but i don't think he would be here if he had a choice.
He runs a clean program and i believe is a great leader for the players. His and x and os are average at best and he is a very poor in game coach and horrible at clock management. He made some odd hires and finally got it right with White and Bob. Stability is key and I do think that his connection with the players has to be valued. With NIL and the ability to transfer its key and he has done an excellent job keeping the team together. I'm in favor of keeping him. I'm more in favor of increasing the money for good assistants as we have seen what coach white can do. So, keep Dino at a fair cost but do everything to retain White and the rest of the staff as without really good assistants Dino can't get it done on the field.

He had two daughters graduate from Syracuse.

He has had a weird run. Lots of What Novembers but also doing things no one has done since P. Doesn’t lose the locker room. Willing to change assistants when needed. Egoless at times. Good with the media, fundraisers, in recruits living rooms. Seems to rep the university well.

The QB play was absolutely awful today from what I saw. Can’t run the ball when your guy isn’t accurate either. This board overrated the backup based on 30 minutes of play.
I was shocked how poorly Carlos played, compared to his earlier cameos. It is now obvious, Shrader is the Offensive MVP for 2022.

We still have a great need for LaNorris to enroll here.

7 years of complaining about depth when developing depth is a major part of his job says everything. I’m starting to finally have it sink in that this will never work until major operating investments are put into the program. They need to throw serious money at recruiting and player development.

I still think this is a good offense
He's gotten us to 12th and 14th in the polls during the season

Recruiting is replacement level and he hasn't found his own qb 7 years in. That's the biggest disappointment. Everywhere he went before, QBs thrived.

I don't think that he has with the exception of Shrader ever landed a QB recruit that has done well on any of the teams he has coached. They have all been inherited from the previous staff

They have been spending serious money improving all of thay

Playing in the Coastal division which except for last year hasn't won a conference championship, makes it easier to get to a bowl.

Yep, that was the biggest unknown with him unfortunately

He can tell you anything you want to know about Hollywood movies and cable miniseries.

He is a solid citizen and the program has been clean of incidents. The players are likeable and probably will do well in life. He represents the university well in press conferences.

We can say this year the team really bought into the team concept, but this wasn't always true over Dino's 7 years, and maybe it's mostly due this year to Mikel Jones.

I guess I'm at a loss on his strengths when it comes to actually coaching the game of football.

His weaknesses are many, but the OP didn't ask for that list.

Fine. Let’s look at wake forest, same division as us, small private school. Has gone to a bowl every year for the last 6 years. Clearly they have found a way to win at least 6 every year in the Atlantic

I can't help but think that Dave Clawson built the Bowling Green program (10–3) that Dino enjoyed the benefit of in his 2 years there.
