What do you think are the 3 things that most negatively affected SU football in the last 25 years

So recruiting and failing is ok in football. Please tell the basketball posters critical of the recruiting failures it’s not the coaches fault there are always reasons we don’t get the players they recruit.

We recruited Mike Vick, and even got a commitment from him (for two days), until his HS coach got a bag from Va Tech.

We recruited Ray Rice, and even got a commitment from him, until Shady and Rice's girlfriend got in his head.

We recruited Mike Hart, but he grew up a Michigan fan. Was never happening.

We recruited Latavius Murray, but he wanted to play in FLA closer to his father. Was never happening.

We recruited Stevie Scott, but he wanted to get out of town for school.

Who did Greg Paulus play college football for again?

You're 0 for 6.

I think he means landed...

Bayside is correct if you look up the definition of recruit it means to persuade someone to become a member of an organization.

I think I need to give a better answer to the original question.

1. Successful recruiting
2. Successful recruiting
3. Successful recruiting

I don't know about last 25, but last 5 was clearly Dungey's injuries (particularly the 1st cheap hit concussion that I believe made him more susceptible to the others)

1. An unacceptable financial investment into the football program and Carrier Dome from 1998-2016.

2. Buzz Shaw’s mouth followed by the hiring of Nancy Cantor > Hiring Daryl Gross > Hiring Greg Robinson - Incompetence Fed incompetence.

3. Michael Vick’s decision, partly the result of #1, led to the departure of Kevin Rogers, emergence of Virginia Tech and further erosion of a program built by Coach Mac and successfully shepherded by Coach P.

You know why Kevin Rogers left?

He was "co-OC" with Uncle George.

Rogers could only call the plays until we got into the red zone, then DeLeone would take over.

Rogers wanted to be full time OC, and Coach P refused. So he became OC at Notre Dame until Bob Davie got fired, then he ended up at Va Tech.

Coach P was the ultimate enigma of this program IMO. On one hand, he put in more hours than any HC in the country, had excellent special teams year over year, a defense that I’ve grown to miss (thanks to several of his successors) and despite average recruiting always managed to have a couple of difference makers and players who would go on to great pro careers. He also had the wherewithal to recognize the advantage that a multi-dimensional athlete at the QB position could offer.

On the other hand, had a weird infatuation with DeLeone (didn’t he move him from OC to DC one offseason?), every game he coached had at least one boneheaded call or penalty and probably worst of all, he squandered talent, in a program that struggled to find it, even through the McNabb years where he averaged 3-4 losses a year in an inferior Big East.

George DeLeone was an all-time great offensive line coach who never should have been calling plays for a program with big aspirations.

The question is the last 25 years. Can’t blame Greg Robinson for the current state. Historically Joe Paterno did more damage to the program. Not recruiting Ray Rice,Mike Hart,Greg Paulis,Latavius Murray , Stevie Scott and Mike Vick hurt more than any coaching hire.

This belongs in the SyracuseFan gilded posts or Hall of Fame. How do we make this happen?

George was a very good play caller for years. The AD wanted to make him a scapegoat. P agreed but retained him on the D side.

To me the mismanagement of 2005 was criminal. P and D deserved that season no matter how bad the bowl turned out. The rush to fire a guy who moonwalked into 2 fiestas a gator and an orange in the 90s deserved that final season. The recruiting has never been as good as it was for that period even with flinstone facilities. We still were Syracuse and still a force in the north east. It wasn’t lost on people how callous the transition was handled w p.

1) Jake staying too long.
2) Gross getting hired
3) Marrone leaving

Wrong about Jake.

He knew in 2003 that we needed the ACC money.

And he knew that Pasqualoni wasn’t the problem.

Gross wasn’t the problem - he saw immediately that we had an infrastructure issue and he took action.

Marrone leaving still bothers me.
