What has Benny done to deserve...

Jimmy has a DBPM of -0.6, Benny is 0.1. No one is a D star on our team except for Jesse. But there is a difference.

In aggregate advanced stats, Jimmy has a DWS of 0.4 and Benny has one of 0.2. Jimmy has played 760 minutes and Benny has played 261.

Jimmy is consistently flailing around on defense a dozen times per game because he doesn't have the foot-speed to make it work.

At this point there's nothing more to be done than give Benny his 5-10 mins and play him more if he does well. Clearly he's a broken kid.

Game set match.

No reason for the minutes to be so out of whack.
Jimmy could play 28 minutes and Benny 12 minutes. Our offense wouldn’t suffer since we have 3 shooters and Edwards.

Also I bet a bunch of Benny’s minutes are with multiple bench players at the same time since we hockey line sub.

EXACTLY. Offense hasn’t been the problem. Much rather score 70 than 75 and give up 65 rather than 80.

It seems, from my perspective, at this point people are arguing that Benny should play more now so that the team next year can be better - a perfectly reasonable argument, but something the coach never ever does (i.e. sacrificing games now in hope of future sucess).
With the available options now, this season, at forward - Jimmy/Swider are the best net-positive for winning games.

I would love to seen how bad Jeese must have been in practice last year and how much his improvement in practice truly has been.

I bet Jesse was good in practice last year but why play him when one of Alan, Marek, Quincy, Buddy would have had to sit down.

Its like the HC predetermine minutes and there has to be major reasons to change.

We’re the worst defensive team in the history of JAB. Sure, some for next yrs version of Benny, but more for present day cuse success.

So Benny makes us a marginally better defensive team but an obviously worse offensive team - net negative
Much better defensively. Jimmy cannot cover, nor rebound with power 5 competition. Like previously mentioned, the other 4 can score. 11-11 with this great offense isn’t where we want to be

I watch Jimmy a lot when we play. I’ll never accuse him of dogging it. He hustles, but he tires, and thats when he makes mistakes and it looks like he’s not trying.

He’d be more efficient if he got a 5-6 minute break each half.

There are other plays that he can’t make and guys simply jump over him (that rebound slam last night), the NCState kid was a foot higher before Jimmy could react. So he didn’t challenge and make a silly foul.

Historically, we’re the guy jumping over the other teams players.

I’ll nitpick here and probably wrong for doing so. Symir threw a pretty crappy pass to Jimmy down low in the 2nd half. Jimmy really half assed the effort to get it, resulting in a turnover and a Symir benching. Later on, Jimmy threw the same pass to Jesse, but he saved him.

Lets just acknowledge that neither player is our ideal defensive forward, and part of our problem and theirs is that the other players on the team also have defensive failings, which tend to compound our and their overall defensive lapses.
If you think Benny is much better defensively I do not know what to tell you.
I think with a little game time Benny will be light years better. You have to consider who he practices against and the type of offense he faces in practice. When he gets in to games, the athletes and offense is much different. He has the physical abilities to cover a lot of ground (which would help Jesse out quite a bit). Also, he is very smart, he will be a really good defender. With regard to rebounding, if he played as many minutes as Jimmy, he would rebound much better than Jimmy. He definitely wouldn't get jumped over for rebounds.

I also noted that Benny's last play, before he got pulled, was when Buddy made a terrible pass to Benny, resulting in a turnover.

Weird how that works

Edit - and it happened on the far end of the court away from JB who was probably also shielded from seeing the entire play.

Joe is our 3rd best defender both based on DBPM and DWS behind Jesse and Cole. And our worst defender in both metrics is Sy.

For sure. I just want to be clear, there are differences between the others, but Jesse is the only guy that can claim to be a good defender.

IMO and IMO only, I believe Benny can achieve a defensive coverage that Jimmy just physically cannot.

I have said this on different occasions and maybe in this thread. If the roles were reversed this year and Benny was allowed to play through his Freshman mistakes there is no doubt in my mind he would outproduce Jimmy on both ends of the court outside of three-point shooting. But he wasn't so we will never find out if that was the case or not but it is a hill I am ready to die on.
