I believe he was also an assistant.I don't mean promoting an assistant. I mean going outside the University to hire. I think it was 1968, the year we hired Roy Danforth.
Correct. 1964-68.I believe he was also an assistant.

Yes, he was hired to replace Marc Guley who was the coach during the diasterous period when we set a new NCAA record by losing I believe 27 games in a row over 2 seasons. I do remember it. Fred Lewis I believe recruited Dave Bing and that changed the whole trajectory of mens basketball at SU. Before that it was barely an afterthought. Football was King. And the City of Syracuse had the NBA Nationals. I think mens basketball games back then were played in the War Memorial and before that in Archbold Gymnasium. I had to look it up - Manley Field House opened for the 62-63 season. It was built not for basketball but primarily as an indoor practice facility for the football team so they had an indoor place to practice for their bowl games. It had a dirt floor for many years. The basketball court was built on a raised platform above the dirt flloor. Fred Lewis also recruited (?) Jim Boeheim, Dave Bing's backcourt partner. And he's been here ever since. (JB that is.) I believe the hiring of Fred Lewis was made after what we'd call a "national search". I think the AD then was Lou Andreas and the Chancellor was William Tolley.Fred Lewis?
For about 50 years plus it was successful. A Syracuse tradition. In its 110 year history, Syracuse's men's lacrosse team has had only five head coaches.Syracuse basketball is run like a British monarchy.
Thank you for the history.
