Wildhack is on the Clock

There are two people that should be talked to about the next hire, if there will be a next hire, for their input besides John's inner circle, JAB and Melo.
JAB would probably suggest Griff, knowing his loyalty.

Here's my biggest issue with Red that is very fixable. There's no non-negotiable for the players. When JB was coaching and a player took a poor shot or didn't rotate on defense we all knew they were coming out and it was accompanied with an earful. I'm not debating JB's tack or tone, but every season things started a little loose and tightened up by the first big game under JB.

Is Red too nice to yank guys for shot selection or not rotating on defense? The same mistakes and sloppy play are maddening. This has nothing to do with talent or additional coaching experience.

Kiyan was not a slam dunk to Syracuse. The staff worked it's tail off to get him. No guarantee he sticks
if we change staff. He might stick. But it is no sure thing.

The staff did do a very good job and has done a pretty good job recruiting overall. But barring SU making some bizarre hire, if they let Red go I don't believe it would impact Kiyan's decision. Could it affect one of the other recruits, definitely possible.

I think Donnie would disagree with you for sure.

Red seems to have a quicker trigger with the forwards compared to the guards.

I assume the Athletic Dept. is under tremendous pressure right now, as are most P4 Athletic Depts., to find $20 million plus to pay players starting next Fall. How that factors in to a decision on the basketball coach is a very good question. I don't know which way it cuts. Thoughts anyone?

Well they surely won’t make any money with 10k hoop crowds.

And if that's the case, so be it. None of our recruits are anywhere near good enough to be the reason we keep a bad coach. Kiyan included.

You may think that but when was the last time we had two top thirty players? It’s not like we wave a wand and pick up top ten recruits.

If Melo/Kiyan will stay for a new coach then fire Red no doubt. If not and Melo is fully locked in on bringing us back then his money and connections are 100% worth keeping Red one more year.

That first game vs LeMoyne wasn't his first game as a coach. He coached a season last year. I don't want to be put in a position of defending what I have watched this season. But i don't want JB anywhere near this decision. The only decision I wanted him to make was to quit 6 years before he did. When he wasn't the same guy that he was when I went to school 48 years ago.
Thanks for your replies. I appreciate them and what you say. I don't disagree with you. Btw - I was a year behind JB at SU and watched him and Dave Bing play. I had zero clue then that he'd ever be the SU head coach.

You’re about to get ripped apart with that comment hah.

Donnie Freeman was the #6 ranked recruit. Freshmen wont save the day in this portal era.
I agree with you but a lot of his rough start has been due to the mess around him. And yes that’s on Autry and others.

The sweet spot is prob 1 McDs, 1-2 other freshman role guys off the bench that are good fits and 4 stars. Then As much talent and experience as you can get from the portal in the 1 and 5.

I see no reason to try and have two top 10 HS recruits every year. And really if we ever get a home run in the portal or developing a young kid we gotta figure out how to keep them and make sure they’re not using us as a stepping stone.

We have two McDonald's All Americans on the roster and it's the worst Syracuse team in modern history
One of them just missed a month and is still out. And what is modern history to you? Since you have been around?

From what I have heard, Red being the coach had little to no impact on Kiyan coming to SU and I don't believe Red being let go would cause him to re-evaluation his decision.
Solid info or 3rd hand?

Donnie was not the #6 player in the country. He rallied and made the Mc dees.
That depends where you look Dash - He was #6 on ESPN but #15 on 247 & Choppa was #59 on 247

Also according to ESPN Miami had the #10 & #50 ranked recruit last year and we see how well thats working out for them

I look at a team like Marquette and what they are doing...

Their main guys are either low end 4 star recurits who have been there forever (Mitchell, Joplin, Jones), mix in new low end 4 star recruits on the bench (Parnam, Owens). Rinse and repeat.

Feels like that could be our sweet spot but in order to do that you have to have players GET BETTER. We had that with Maliq and let him go. Instead, we have 3 years of Chris Bell.

No. Not true. Players win games. Just ask JB

Shaka has a plan, a system and recruits for that system - he is good at player evaluation and development. As of now I don’t think Red has any of those things.
