Wildhack retiring July 1

Can't make that assumption. Maybe he didn't "know" then he was going to retire.
Exactly. Dude is 70. Sometimes all it takes is a health scare or they notice they’re losing a step. I work with a lot of executives. Some can hold it together for a long time. Others not so much.

He said on the radio the job was 7 days a week 365 now days. Even 10 years ago it was prob more of a cakewalk but with the stuffshow ncaa is now days it doesn’t sound like it’s a very fun job for a 70 year old.

FWIW, Wildhack is 67.

Look at what Fran sad about doing this work for 10 yrs. I just can’t imagine the fun and joy of it at this level as a coach or AD lasts a whole lot longer than such a time period in this environment before exhaustion takes over. Maybe if some things change to put more structure around all the transferring and NIL it can balance out but as it is right now 10 yrs working 365 days a year and long hours for each is a heavy burden.

I wonder if there's some back-channel communication going on among the BoT, Wildhack, a presumed AD frontrunner and HC candidates/agents.
Richmond mentioned something similar with the new Chancellor perhaps meeting coaches and I am just spitballing here but if we are bringing in the AD from West Point, I would be tremendously surprised if there were not back channel meetings and discussions with candidates, the new AD, etc.
As a matter of fact I thought I read in one of these Wildhack threads both the new Chancellor and AD are at Syracuse already. Which makes a ton of sense. I would not be surprised if there is a whole bunch of things happening behind the scenes so both Chancellor and AD hit the ground running. Plus it gives time for Kent and John to brief their replacements on a number of matters, process, etc.

I would extend that view on a lot of different areas within an athletic department. It is pretty much never ending. At the entry level, pay is basically minimum wage. The whole entire industry is going to have a talent crisis as more and more people retire or leave. There’s not much joy in it.

I could see a scenario where they allow Wildhack to hire the new coach, they elevate someone on an interim basis from within and then go to market to find a permanent replacement once the new Chancellor has a chance to get their feet under them. Just spitballing.

This would be great, if they are far along with a replacement candidate for AD. One would think that the guy from Army would be appealing on a lot of levels - high academics, discipline, accountability.

The two questions I would have is (1) how is he going to be at fund raising, which might be entirely different than he's had to do in the past, and (2) how connected is he to the coaching and recruitment of coaches scene?

Who are his past relationships with coaches?

Did he work as an assistant AD at a P5 school before he went to West Point?

He's been at Air Force, Arizona, UCLA and Harvard before Army.

I have to think the announcement timeline will be to announce the new chancellor within 2 weeks followed by the new AD before having a new coach in place by mid-March.

Tom Theodorakis. Played lacrosse at SU from 2003-2006. Young guy, same class as GMac. Background at Air Force, UCLA, Arizona, Harvard, before West Point. Left Arizona, who rehired him a few years later at a higher position. Also got an internal promotion at West Point.

How would this impact the coach hiring? Even if JW is to go through the coach selection process will a coach be ok with picking Syracuse with a the AD in his way out?

There's a lot of joy working in college athletics. But there are LONG hours. I exited college athletics after ~15 years to see what it was like to have a free weekend at some point between September and May.

I firmly believe that the new AD will be in place and working with Wildhack.
The ACC tournament is a month out, so you are saying the new AD will be here or is already here through the firing & hiring process? There is no national AD search?

I believe the new AD will be announced early March and will be working with Wildhack to have the next coach announced by mid-March, or at least in advance of the portal opening obviously.
