Wildhack Tidbits

I remember getting the acceptance letter to SU, sang Amen while my dad punched himself in the face. First hoops game, Amen was gonzo.

The kids seem to do fun various fun stuff at hoop games. Fans "travel" (reality is they live in the markets we play in) for hoop, chant, make noise, etc. Difference being hoops usually wins or the expectation is there.

Teams win, places fill up, stuff happens. The Jose Jose Jose thing for the Mets worked better in 06 when they were good, now it's 3 drunk dudes from Woodhaven doing it, not the same.

But the hoops fans don't really do much. They chant Let's Go Orange and do the stand and clap thing (usually half assed). Wichita State fans thoroughly outclassed us on that front at the F4 in 2013, to say nothing of the UM and UL fans.

I've made my peace with it. It's just irritating to read people complain. If you want to chant then chant. Sing the fight song like literally every other fan base in D1 (like friggin BC and UConn). Do the Go, S-U chant. Create a Who's House/Our House chant instead of complaining that the administration do it for you. Hell, the J-E-T-S thing started from one dopey fan. As did the C-O-N-N, UConn UConn UConn thing. Someone go be the C-U-S-E guy.

If you want a better atmosphere take some damn responsibility and help create it. Otherwise just stop complaining.

Wifi, quad stuff, all reasonable to complain to the administration. But in the stands? Cheers? Do it or shut it.

Maybe i missed it but I dont recall some huge outcry from this board or the fanbase in general about the lack of chants or cheers or other stuff in the stands. People were complaining about the bell. As far as Wichita State and others out classing us with that stuff 98% of their fanbase would give their left hand to change places with SU. Comparing SU to the Pats or Redsox is silly your talking about pro teams with national followings and truth be told non red sox fans fans find singing sweet caroline bizarre amd creepy.

It's all part of the complaining about atmosphere.

Your last line sums it up. I bet the majority of SU fans think other fans singing their teams fight song is bizarre and creepy. And that's why we get the minor league nonsense at the Dome. That's what people want. They actively avoid doing anything to help create a collegiate atmosphere.

Yes, Wichita State fans would love to have SU hoops success. That has zero to do with game day atmosphere.

National followings also have nothing to do with it. Perhaps the best hoops atmosphere is at a small school in Utah, where the "I believe that we will win" chant was popularized.

All I'm saying is that if SU fans want a better atmosphere they should take responsibility over the things they can control. Cheer, sing, chant. Actively participate. Make it better.

It's supposedly a classic, but Sweet Caroline IS creepy. Neal Diamond (yuck) wrote the song for his wife, but he used JFK's daughter's name. So there are some traditions out there that that I'd prefer we don't copy. We have our own, they just need to be choreographed and organized better. It's all in the works, and I don't mind people complaining because that drives change and we need to upgrade the in-game experience in a serious way. Babers is going to do his part. Now the AD has to step up.

On hoop - they do the stuff in pre-game when the other team is announced, they cheer, chant, get loud, etc. Even during the anthem they ripped of the Baltimore O thing, but whatever it's something. Again - we win there so its a lot easier to cheer for stuff.

The idea of our crowd - and I love them - doing the Dino whose house our house thing is really a bridge too far.

But tend to agree over the years the school killed a lot of tradition that we see in other places. Heck we killed the seating chart, there's a lot of work to do.

British soccer fans have insanely awesome traditions singing along to Blue Moon, Hey Baby and You'll Never Walk Alone. But I'm guessing SU fans think this is creepy and doesn't help the atmosphere.

I hear ya. They don't do the "Who's He" intros and there are even signs to prompt them. But it isn't what it is.

The students do em. Been to a couple of college hoop Gamedays at the Dome, they represented well.

And before people start ripping on the kids - it's a far different student base then it was in our day.

FWIW, I'd go full WWE in the Dome. We should just use this for our entrance...

I'd also play this song when the opponent comes out of the tunnel. This is why I'm not in charge of these things...

Whatever you think of pro wrestling (I think it's a farce), they're master marketers. They can turn a cat fight into a coronation. There are lessons to be learned here for the Dome -- which is a unique (college) facility. It's loud; it's weather-proof and it's on campus. We should be turning that place into a big theatre during games with light shows, fan-mascot contests, music, etc... Specific themes are interchangeable -- we can keep them "collegiate" and honor traditions -- just pump up the hype and theatrics. Anyone remember JAB arriving at Manley in a HumVee? It's mad fun, but still collegiate and tasteful (and gives a nod to our troops as well). The sky's the limit here with the right creativity and investment.

Bingo. The "sport" of WWE is the height of silliness. And I say that as a fan. But the spectacle is genius. SU should hire someone who runs events for WWE and let him or her do whatever they want. It'd be amazing.

I think some people miss the point. That whose house / our house chant is begging to happen. We went to some rode games last year and that chant was happening away from the dome.( bc probably won't forget that either). The fans just need the opportunity for it to happen. Who ever is in charge should make that opportunity show up. The players get pumped up by it. The bell has no pump up to it. Sounds like a bouy out in the ocean no one is around to hear. The fans aren't singing the fight song hell they barely respond to the easy stuff like go orange. Bring back the whistle play a song or whatever they want but it has to be a way of creating momentum for the team not putting them to sleep. On twitter it was made a huge deal about a team coming on to enter sandman. Fans love that recognizable singalong stuff. I'm not sure how everyone doesn't get this

Taking advantage of the "Whose House? Our House!" mantra (that went viral nationally, right?) seems like an absolute no brainer to me. But, so was playing an up tempo spread passing offense in a dome. Let's hope that the light finally comes on for this as well.

I've always envied English soccer fans for their game experience and that Liverpool video posted above shows why. They used t0 play "Don't Stop Believing" by Journey and a portion of the crowd sang it without being prompted. I know, it's a cheesy song but who cares, so is "Walk Alone" and that is something special for that crowd. Put the words to the song on the ribbon board and watch it take off. "I Want It That Way" by the Back Street Boys is also very catchy and might lead to a Cuse "thing". Don't judge my musical tastes by these suggestions, please.

Don't Stop Believin' always gets the crowd singing. I remember a Billy Joel interview where he said Piano Man is a simple 1-2-3 rhythm and that's why it's so easy to sing to. That Journey song is similar.
