win the toss, elect to receive

If LSU wins the toss, you have to assume they'd defer. Figure they'd force a 3 and out, then bury us at halftime, then know they had the ball to start the 2nd half, where their only mission becomes don't fumble.

If we win the toss, I would bet my ballsack that shafer defers.

Because that's what he does. He's soft.
I don't think he views it as soft, but I agree - he wants his defense on the field first.

Me, I'd rather take the ball and get the first TD and play with the lead, but I'm just a stone cold assassin like that.

the quietest a crowd ever is...is the 5 minutes after halftime.

most people arent back to their seats yet.

the theory is the away team would be operating without crowd noise and you lose the home field advantage.

not sure how it applies to the Dome anymore, but thats the NFL & big college thought.

for the Orange, i guess other pyschology would apply.

Whether it's real football or playing Madden, I always, always want the ball in the 2nd half.
Me too. Love even having the potential of scoring just before half and then immediately getting it back. Even the possibility of getting two straight possessions is enough for me. And preventing the other team from getting that same opportunity hammers it home.

If Dungey plays, win the toss and elect to receive. Have to try to set the tone. #hardnosed!

If Dungey doesn't play, win the toss, defer and hope for the best. Would be really bad to receive and then have a 3 and out.

But having LSU drive the field and score in 5 minutes is better?

Take your chances setting the tone.

I understand the advantage of getting it to start the second half and agree with deferring against most teams but let's be honest, what are the odds it will even matter by then in this game?

yeah, we always defer. we have been a team built around a strong defense under Saban and Miles, and I am not sure I can recall a situation where we didn't defer

And the worst comparison of the entire season so far goes toooooooo...!
You said deferring means he's soft. I gave an example of a coach who always defers (maybe the best coach of all-time). I guess because it strongly contradicts your point, it's a horrible comparison in your mind.:noidea:

If you were being sarcastic, it wasn't clear. If you weren't, it's a ridiculous statement to make.

Ummm..

I don't even know how to respond to this it's so off base :(

Most coaches play to their strengths. A team like Oregon probably elects to receive. I've always liked D first both in the game and especially in OT.

I can just see how this is going to play out.

"You take the ball." "No, we don't want it. YOU take it." "No, you." "No way, you take it." "I insist, you take it." "Dude, seriously, I don't want it. You take it."

This continues for 37 minutes until finally the refs just give up and call the game.

OT, you have to.

I like starting on offense. Back in the day, 96/97, I remember it seemed like this huge run where we'd win the toss, take the ball, and score a TD on that first possession. I remember the Fiesta Bowl against K State breaking that streak, as we only started with a FG on that first drive.

Given the way SU has played offense most years in recent history, starting on offense isn't the best idea.

Not me. I pound my opponent right out of the gate. They understand immediately how their day will go. They know they are playing from behind and I will always have the advantage.
