Class of 2026 WR Messiah Hampton (NY) Verbal to Oregon

Death No GIF

Yeah yeah, don't care, doesn't sit right with me.

Thats not true. He needs way more support from JW
Yea I don’t think people understand how much more support we need. Everyone has their opinions on the athletic department, I personally don’t think they do enough when you consider how we always seem a step behind. Fran is doing a lot to keep us from that, but you can only do so much.

Please explain.

We are one step behind in a lot of faucets. NIL is better than it was previous years, still no where near let’s say top 20? Our nil programs for a while couldn’t get along and work together on certain things (that’s been mostly patched). Our much needed new facility is great but we were a few years behind when we should of had that. That’s just few things, athletic department as a whole needs to get out more for fundraising for NIL. These next 3-5 years are crucial if we want to be a power conference team in 2030.

I agree with all of that, but I do think it will be very difficult for us to be in the top 20 for NIL when we are going up against schools with much bigger alumni bases. No question facilities have lacked and we are getting better there. (I also realize you aren't saying we should be top 20).

This Hampton loss definitely stings if the reason we lost him is that our former coach won him over. Sure losing Ross is likely due to salary differences, but I doubt he will be at Oregon for the full 3 years Messiah may be, unless he is promoted to OC, etc. Risky to choose a school based on a position coach.

We still have a play for him on signing day. We were very close to grabbing him even with coach Ross not here anymore. But I would hope we can at the least get NIL to top 35? That would be a good range to build off.

Completely agree. Many of us have lead teams and organizations and if there is anything you learn is elite top decile talent pays for its self many times over. You never let those people walk for money. Talent eats strategy for lunch.

Ross was lured away with money but he was only paid as the 12th highest paid wr coach at Oregon. Getting outbid for an outside hire who is higher risk by nature is one thing but you can NOT get out bid for someone on staff that you have already confirmed is elite, particulary when the dollar amount was the MEDIAN of the top 25. That is not an outrageous ask.

You. Do. Not. Let. Talent. Walk. (unless its a legitmate promotion you just dont have availble at your org, like a full time OC in this case)

Going to Oregon is fine but going because a position coach is a decision of a 17 yr old. Position coaches at this level stay at schools for 2-3 years max. He will already been there for 1 by the time Hampton arrives. Fran isn’t as likely to go anywhere. Just say it’s for the money and it’s all good. Ross could be gone at the end of this year

Alright, time to pile on Oregon.

My SU roommate moved to Oregon and said Oregon is full of weird, unfriendly people with mental issues. The gloomy, wet weather is depressing. When it’s not raining, it’s cloudy. Your vitamin D level gets depleted.

AI says:

Studies have shown Oregon ranking among the states with the highest rates of mental health disorders.

Various factors may contribute to these statistics, such as high housing costs, economic hardship, and a lack of support systems.

On the other hand, the have Nike / Phil Knight money and cool variant uniforms.

Which is probably just about all a 17 year old cares about.

Yea i’d go to Oregon in a second if i was going to college. They just have a fun/swag aura around them. Plus, i like Fall weather.

Eh, it’s easy to say that now. Unfortunate to lose this one but it was always an uphill battle, regardless of how close we may have been at one point or another. Signing day is a long way away so we will see if Fran can pull some of his magic, but it’s been a good effort nonetheless.

Messiah was all Cuse until Ross went to Oregon. Even if they offered more money. Ross and Messiah relationship is too strong. Trust along with money is everything.
you know this best but i was told this recently too. will see what happens in a year if Ross is still there or not. It's not easy to travel from Rochester to Eugene.

I'm very very curious to see what happens with the new House settlement framework. What does it mean to be "top 20" in NIL? The deals are going to be audited, and it's not like you can just have a huge pot of money sitting around and throw it at the players. I expect that business arrangements (sponsorships) are going to be much more important, and that makes me wonder what the difference between schools' affiliated offerings will really be.

So, uh, you realize you're comparing Oregon to Syracuse, right?
