ACC Media Days July 21-22, 2016 Charlotte, NC

Nice to see that they are there. Had a two hour delay, sitting on the plane, in Atlanta.

I didn't get Duke either. Think he was getting his schools/divisions confused.
I think he's being NC centric and suggesting SU and Babers' system will hurt their recruiting. If so, the good news is that he already believes we are past Wake, but the bad news is that he doesn't think we'll get to UNC level.

Swofford: ACC football and basketball games combined generate more viewers for ESPN than any other conference.

I will defer to Scooch as to just how meaningful this statement might be, but this seems to be particularly significant.

Given the ACC's geographical footprint in major east coast media and population centers, ESPN viewership, continued ACC bball and football success (but we need a 1 or 2 more programs to climb to Clemson and FSU levels), and the ACC linear network... What conference is better positioned to capture future revenue streams?

Given what we're told is THE most important metric for $$$ in regards to TV payouts, we should be very close to the top of the mountain.

ACC women’s basketball coaches see nothing but positives from new network deal - Triangle Sports Network

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Syracuse Orange women’s basketball coach Quentin Hillsman liked what he heard when Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) commissioner John Swofford announced the conference’s new TV deal at the 2016 ACC Kickoff on Thursday at the Westin Charlotte.

Yes, the announcement was made at a football media relations event as the upcoming season approaches, but the partnership with ESPN not only got the approval of gridiron bench leaders, but those on the hardwood as well.

“The added exposure is going to be so huge for our conference,” 2016 NCAA-finalist coach Hillsman said.

“I really believe that we have the best conference in the country in women’s basketball and anytime that you have a network that can showcase that and highlight your games is going to be tremendous. It’s gonna help recruiting a ton because now we can definitely become a national brand. It’s a remarkable deal.”

For Katie Meier, who played at Duke (1986-1990), and is a long-serving coach in the conference, having recently completed her 11th season with the Miami Hurricanes, the progression of the women’s game and the added exposure it will receive will accelerate in the coming years.

When the network is fully implemented by 2019, the linear network will feature 450 exclusive live events including 40 regular-season football games, and more than 150 men’s and women’s basketball games

“It’s massive,” Meier said.

“I think we’re the sport that’s really going to benefit the most from it because the quality of play in our league is just amazing and we needed that national platform. For us, a lot of time football is on a national platform, and men’s basketball is on it too, but for women’s basketball – we’ve had teams in the Final Four, we’ve got eight in the Top 25 – and we needed to go national. The women’s basketball coaches (in the conference) are rejoicing today. This has been huge for our sport.”

ACC Kickoff: Rules changes coming in 2016 - ACCSports.com

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —
Targeting calls from the replay booth and tweaks to rules regarding timeouts will be among the changes coming to ACC officiating in 2016.

On Thursday, ACC Coordinator of Football Officiating Dennis Hennigan discussed those changes at the ACC Kickoff. The new rules include:

  • Sliding ball-carriers, including non-quarterbacks, will be considered defenseless players, and any forcible contact to the head or neck area will result in a targeting flag. In addition, the play will be considered dead when the ball-carrier starts the slide, and the ball will be spotted where he began the slide.
  • Tripping the ball-carrier is now illegal.
  • While low hits to the passer (at or below the knee) were already illegal, players will now also be flagged for wrapping up passer at or below the knee.
  • ”Crackback” blocks are now prohibited.
  • Replay officials can now call targeting from the booth in instances where the targeting is “egregious.” Hennigan showed two examples of targeting from last season that he considered egregious:

  • Two unsportsmanlike fouls on a coach will result in the ejection of that coach.
  • Coaches will now have the option of choosing between 30-second timeouts and full timeouts.
  • A team that is ahead cannot benefit from committing a foul in the last two minutes. In those final two minutes, if a team that is leading commits a foul, its opponent will have the option to call for the clock to stop until the next snap.
  • As previously announced, the league will use collaborative instant replay as a one-year experiment. Replay officials on-site will communicate with officials in Greensboro on every replay.

I was taught from a young age that tripping is illegal - is this really new?

Not sure I understand this.

"players will now also be flagged for wrapping up passer at or below the knee."

And "Replay officials on-site will communicate with officials in Greensboro on every replay." We got hosed on so many replay calls I'm good with this but how long is it going to take. yikes.

NC State head coach Dave Doeren on Dino Babers: "His track record as an offensive play-caller speaks for itself."

NC State head coach Dave Doeren thinks Dino Babers will be able to build another strong offense @ Syracuse. Just has to get pieces in place.

NC State head coach Dave Doeren said he worked a camp w/ Dino Babers when they were at UNI and EIU, respectively. Called him "genuine."
