Potential DCs?

Based on prior articles, it sounds like it gets kicked upstairs to the AD office to contract, once the interview process happens and Dino selects his guy. So Dino being on the road recruiting doesn't mean much I suspect.

My guess is the new DC is an existing DC somewhere. Using sutomcat's post of candidates, and only guessing, I think you can rule out a few off the bat.

Heacock - I can't see him leaving for a "lateral move" and the $$ wouldn't be enough
Strong - sounds like he wants to take his time
Rudzinski - I like him, but as an AF grad himself, find it hard to believe that he would leave his alma mater
Freeman - I think this would be a Home Run, but my guess is that he is going to wait for Fickell to take a Big job and be his DC or be in line to be Cincinnati HC... would love to be wrong
Powell - too inexperienced

Out of this list I would think it would be one of Borland, Carlin or Hetherman.

Hetherman would be great, up and coming guy who coaches a really efficient and aggressive defense. And he looks like some kind of bald and bearded Will Ferrell character

I guess he wants to recharge his batteries for a year. Was owed $2.6m & $2.7m the next 2 years. Can pick up an additional 6 figures from Florida now.
He gets nothing additional, what he makes there will come off his termination contract from his prior school. That's how these contracts are written.

Not if he is an off the field analyst.

You didnt read the article dis did you?

Nowhere in that article does it say anything about any off the field job voiding their prior duty to mitigate claus in their prior contracts.

Matter of fact it says the opposite.

Apologies. You are right. I did read but misinterpreted the wording of Butch’s contract. I will edit the above!

No worries, I wouldn't think schools would put any kind of loophole in those types of contracts.

Even when they take media jobs they are still bound by their contract.

Is it possible that the new DC was coaching in the Super Bowl? Or are they waiting for after the 5th to announce so nobody out bids SU again and the new hire finishes his obligation with his current team? Or is Steve staying as DC? Exciting stuff!

I still expect that the hired DC is at his current school closing out their recruiting class, and will be announced after signing day.

Yep...that's what I figure too, but still...it would be interesting to see if there are any coaching ties regarding the 2 teams to Dino.

I agree with this. It is so late in the recruiting cycle, if a DC announces he is leaving now, it might cause some players in the class to leave. A DC who wants to minimize the impact of their departure might ask to not be announced until after NLOI Day.

I don't think announcing the new DC now is going to make a big impact on SU's class one way or another. We have been mostly using a 3 man DL since Dino came here. It isn't like we have a lot of DTs that are going to be left without a place to play if we do end up playing 3-3-5 next season.

Just my own opinion but I just think a DC waiting to announce after signing day is a bulls#!+ thing to do to the young men. I may be in the minority here but honesty and integrity is way more important than a recruiting class being impacted.

head coaches leaving after signing day is an issue. position coaches not nearly as much because they may not even be recruiting or signing the kids they are coaching at that position.

I agree. To me there is no reason to wait. I just think Dino doesn’t have anyone. Nobody else waits to announce a hire.
This whole DC search has been a crap show from the beginning.
Dino’s career here at Syracuse could hinge on the hire, so understand wanting to get it right. But there is no reason at all for taking this much time.

There have been entire coaching staffs hired from scratch in the same amount of time.

Mostly agree. But he has an obligation to the school too. Not really right to announce he’s leaving two weeks before LOI and then start recruiting against his former school, maybe with some of the same kids. But yes, I mostly agree with you that it’s tough for the kids.

Well the kids are signing to the school, not a coach....

Dino hasnt had to make many staff changes during his head coaching stints. He seems to be a very methodical decision maker. Im sure the screw up has made him extra cautious.

I took a look at the staffs and here are people who could potentially fit.
Joe Woods: Passing Game Coordinator and DB coach, SF; DC w/ Denver Broncos, lots of college experience
Chris Kiffin: Pass Rush Specialist Coach, SF; previously DC of Florida Atlantic... yes related to those other Kiffins
Matt House: LB Coach, KC; previous DC at Kentucky, FIU and Pittsburgh

I assume Dino would want someone with previous coordinating experience. House looks like the best fit, but still think its likely he goes with someone currently in college

House left UK last year to join Spags staff and is likely his heir. I don't think he's coming back to college as a DC.

I highly doubt signing day has anything to do with hiring and announcing a guy. If there is some sort of gentlemen's agreement out there then we're the only school who partakes. In terms of recruiting, I'd be more worried about our school and our recruiting than somebody else's. We just had a major junior day. We're being respectul of someobody's else class rather than having our DC get a jump on our 2021 class? Doesn't seem likely. If it is the case, I don't agree with that business model.

We haven't announced a hire yet because in all likelyhood the guy hasn't been hired yet.

Agree. I don't think we're playing the role of Mr. Nice Guy at this point.

And if you're a DC about to take this role, I'm sure you'd rather get it announced, locked in, and get to work instead of waiting for signing day for a school you're leaving.

But I've been wrong before (a lot).

I agree with this too. The whole CFB is a mess in some ways.

This might sound crazy and it would never happen but if we handcuff the players so much, why not have some regulations on hiring practices since those things directly impact the kids. The group the NCAA is supposed to protect. Maybe like a signing period with off limit periods for contacting coaches at current schools. I get that this adds more regulatory practice to the system but it’s regulation that is actually to protect kids.
