Class of 2016 QB Jamie Newman (NC) Verbal to Wake

Looks as if the transfer portal will have two Wake QBs. Bowers played at Bishop McDevitt, Harrisburg, PA

Only if they are a grad transfer or transferring from an FCS. Otherwise they have to sit a year.

Aye, but a lot of posters are concerned with 2020 depth.

So let’s be honest here, High major P5 schools are recruiting from lower P5 schools.
Yup. There's no way a starting QB is going to the transfer portal w/o some wink-wink from somewhere else.

Exactly. This is bad for CFB. I know the possibilities get everyone here all jazzed up. But it is exactly as you said, a way of imposing even greater hierarchy on the game. Not good. Not good at all.

What’s your proposal to create parity in college football? Eliminate transfers?

Have any of you looked into the transfer portal? Yes there are kids worth taking but there are also a lot of other kids. There are the ones that didn't get the playing time they thought they deserved so they are transferring. There are kids that got recruited over so they want a new home. There are kids that were injured and couldn't stay healthy and are looking for one more chance. And then there are the kids that aren't going to see any light at the end of the portal and best hope the coach let's them stay at their current school.

Why punish the kids?
It's not. There are 120 D1 schools, right

There are a lot of very good D1aa and D3 programs too that work around 'scholarahip restrictions' all the time.

My buddy played football at Hobart. He got about 75% of his costs covered through varying scholarships and other financial aid

Except your buddy — or some of his teammates — wouldn’t have gotten that aid if there were a bunch of fringe D1 athletes looking for cheaper education...

Lifes not fair

If you are the best, you play

That sort of thing

Why would lowering the number of scholarships improve the transfer system? Now you'd have less kids on each team that are scholarship guys. Which means less top-end depth. How many scholarship QBs would each program have? 3? Sounds to me like if you're a guy who loses their spot to a younger player, it's a perfect market to transfer now. Every team would have less scholarship guys which in theory means less competition for playing time at every position. I don't think it would change anything towards making there be less of an impact of the transfer portal or "free agency"

Well taking away hundreds or thousands of opportunities for free education and living out dreams in an attempt to create parity, which probably wouldn’t change all that much in the landscape at the end of the day, doesn’t seem like a good trade off to me. The more kids that can play college sports the better it will always sort itself out

Anything that nudges the system back toward the target of amateur athletics is a good thing, and will help create parity. More importantly, it will likely lead to a better society, and more educated people.

And how would eliminating transfers do this? Not letting them have the ability to change schools just like a normal student would somehow makes it more "amateur"? They should instead be forced to stay in an unhappy situation? How would this lead to a better society and more educated people if they instead decide to just drop out because they are trapped in a situation they aren't happy with?

Eliminating transfers or reducing scholarships, both of which have been mentioned here, would literally do the exact opposite of leading to more educated people. Parity is only something fans of teams who don’t compete for championships care about and in most cases attempts to create parity would just hurt the players without having much of result to show for.

Also, amateurism as the NCAA views it is a sham they developed and is now maintained to keep kids from making money but that’s another debate.
