I'd venture to guess that was the excuse, but the real reason is they were acquired and the new parent company wanted higher margins on the project. When SU wouldn't budge, the canceled the agreement.

It is a pretty monumental moment that there will be a brand new stadium basically for the community. We all take pride as fans and residents and it’s pretty cool to see what Has evolved. Not sure if anyone has said it officially but it appears they finished the PTFE panels today. Again, I think they need to be sealed together. Pretty sure there are gaps between them right now. But for all intents and purposes, the roof is done.
