12 Team Playoff Coming

If ND is undefeated going into the playoff, they'll be ranked in the Top 4, likely #1 or #2. But, as sufandu says, they'll be the #5 seed and will host a 1st round game. Playoff seeding and ranking in the AP and USA Today polls are totally independent of each other.
And I imagine the playoff committee wouldn't have a problem placing them in the top 4 of their weekly rankings prior to the playoff placements, if they thought they were deserving. I see nothing wrong with that.

And their fans that have been posting here and on other boards I've visited have all said that's perfectly fine with them. As #5, they'd host a 1st round game and then play #4 in a bowl game. Right now as #5 they'd be in the Orange Bowl against the best ACC team not in the playoff or the Fiesta Bowl since, IIRC, that game hosts two at-large teams. With this expansion, it's very hard for me to imagine a situation arising that causes ND to want to change the status quo with the ACC. I would say they got exactly what they wanted.
My only complaint about expansion is would like to make the bowl games relevant.
Top 4 get a bye to second round. 1st week 4 games at bowl sites. 2nd week 4 more games at bowl sites. 3rd week 2 bowl sites .4th week championship game.
11 of the bowl games are eliminated as part of the playoffs. None of the team's get a home field advantage.
Would be more popular then everything but the Basketball tournament.

Ohio State is going to whip the living tarnation out of Notre Dame today which is going to start an era of Notre Dame mediocrity. They won't be in the playoff conversation for a good while.

I hate it. #'s 8-12 will never win a championship. And probably not 6 or 7 either. And nor should they be able to play for one.

It's like the basketball tournament. Low seeds aren't winning a championship, and no one wants to cheer for them anyway after they make it to the Sweet 16. They just don't belong.
Nobody cheers for low seeds in the sweet 16? I think you've got that backwards. Unless people have a vested interest in the higher seed, most people cheer for the low seed (numerically higher number). It's what makes the tournament so much fun.

As it is now, I think interest in the football playoff is relatively low. I didn't watch one whole game last year. I checked in on scores and went to sleep before the late games were over because I just didn't care to see the same old same old. I don't think I watched a minute of the championship game.

I think they're concerned about attendance by having all of them at bowl sites. If a 5 seed makes it to the championship game, people would have to travel 4 times to sites that have to be flown to for a lot of people.

Bring back great New Year's Days! 8 team playoff with the quarterfinals in New Year's Day Bowl games.

The NFL used a 12 team playoff very successfully for decades. I’m 100% fine with this. It will make for an exciting few month of football.
I was thinking about this last night and you are right. I wanted the 6 teams because it was the old NFL playoff system…per conference. Since this encompasses the whole country it should be 12.

Just like the NFL.

And…with the new and improved Calgon conferences the SEC & b1g, 6 would mean those 2 get a bye EVERY year.

This way they still will, but so will 2 other schools from different conferences.

Not sure we will get to 16, but look for them to push for 14.

Maybe saying "Sweet 16" was an exaggeration. Once we get to the elite 8, I'm really not interested in seeing a non-power 5 team with a low seed winning. I just don't think it's compelling.

It's not really an ideal comparison to football either, I guess. Admittedly, I probably would cheer for a #12 if they made it to the championship game. But my take is, the 12 shouldn't be there to begin with and probably will never be there in this format. But what do I really know?

You may not be, but the rest of world loves watching the Cinderellas for as long as possible. George Mason going to the final four was a big deal. Butler making their first final was too. And moderately low seeds like NC State and Villanova knocking off seemingly unbeatable teams will always be legendary. The possibility of any of those is more compelling than what we have in football now.

I'll be interested in these early rounds. And if it ends up being the same old stuff in the final four, I'll likely tune out. I'm just so Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State worn out by the end of the year.

It will be interesting to see how attendance plays out over time, especially for teams that are regulars in the playoffs. 2 games to travel to is already a lot, and expensive.

3 neutral site games (and potentially 4 games in total) will be VERY tough
pretty sure the opening round games will be on campus

ND will be ineligible to be top 4 unless they join a conference according to details

Yeah, but still leaves 3 neutral site games (and a potential away game) that fans have to travel for

most hard core fans will gladly accept that and plan according especially since there will be a minium of 2 years to prep. Along with likely 2 weeks between rounds

No. Reread my comment. They can be ranked top 4. They cannot be a top 4 seed.

Are there enough hard core fans to travel for multiple games to fill stadiums? The SEC teams will have an easier time because so many bowl sites are within driving distance in the south. I wonder how much different it would be for an Iowa or a BYU.

whats the difference though as it says top 4 conference champs get byes

Bama and Georgia fans, and other schools who make it a lot, will not go to all rounds. The appeal is to be a 5-8 seed and get a home game

All hotels required a 3 day block in Indianapolis last season at a premium. It’s expensive. You’re looking at $2k a weekend for a couple to go

The difference is that they can express who they think the best 4 teams are despite the rules dictating the byes go to the top 4 conference champs. I'm talking about the weekly rankings prior to the championship games. If Alabama is ranked 1st and Georgia is undefeated in week 11 but considered lower than Alabama do you think they'll automatically keep them out of the top 4 because a one loss team is leading another conference? No. We're going to see conference champs ranked lower than at larges get byes.

seems black and white above top 4 champs get byes

no, you were right. once we get to the sweet 16, im absolulety done with a cinderella, unless that 'cinderella' is from a power conference.

at that point, move over and let the big dogs play.

this will be a lot more interesting because the bottom seeds will all be from the p5 and not the sun belt.

Surprised we haven't seen empty seats yet for some of these games but I guess Alabama fans have deep pockets.

Spreading the QFs around smaller bowls would be cool though. Sun Bowl, Pinstripe, etc all hosting a playoff game every few years will keep the venues from getting stale.

Not sure where each game will fall relative to the holidays you might have to play that round on Christmas/Christmas Eve or right after.

Might be an idea to scrap Conference Championship games too.
