2021 Ryder Cup

It came down to a numbers game since they wanted to play everybody which I think is the right call especially when you have a 3-1 lead.

Johnson, Thomas, Cantlay, Schauffele, Morikawa -- had to sit one. I would have sat Thomas because I am not a fan of him, but that is not a good reason! Dustin Johnson has positive pedigree at this course as well.

Europe tends to be the team that loads up its players more, but they don't have that firepower at the top right now.

I know they were going to play them all. My surprise was sitting Colin instead of JT also. Colin played much better. But like I said, maybe the back came into play and they did t want to take a chance.

I feel for Scheffler having to be the one to play with DeChambeau.

Stricker can’t let Bryson play anything but 4 ball.
He would be nuclear in a 4 some.

Harrington said all 12 guys are going to play day 1.
I expect with that the USA should do well in the 4 ball afternoon.
The afternoon matchups on paper look favorably for the USA.

The US team is so loaded (talent and form wise), that you could literally pick 4 pairings at random (from the 12) and they would look better on paper every time.

Apparently Scheffler and Dechambeau are buddies.
Maybe it was a factor that helped Scheffler make the team.

and Scheffler came to Bryson’s defense about the taunting fans were doing.

I would have gone with

DJ/Colin
Xander/Cantley
Bryson/Scheffler
Finau/English

If Hatton struggles today and the US fans gets loud during one of his shots, he might snap.

Good start for Dechambeau.
Conks a fan... thankfully only in the leg.

Hatton hasn’t played that well lately. Maybe that’s why they put him with Rahm. Use all Rahms scores

Maybe DJ could yell fore next time?

Cantlay and JT only 1 down now. Europe can't let that one slip away. DJ and Finau are on fire.

Anyone know why they stopped using the term halving the hole and now are using tie/tied?

This feels more like a President's Cup in terms of competitiveness (albeit not atmosphere). The President Cup being an event where the US Talent advantage always comes to the forefront.

No European fans and the ole-ole is definitely missing.
Plus the Europeans have 4 players over 40.
They need a talent infusion.

No more Phil’s on Team USA anymore.

They mentioned earlier that it was part of the group of changes made to the golf rules in 2019.

Seemed unnecessary to me, but it went with there mandate of trying to make golf rules/terms more easy to understand.

I think the US will win but I wouldn't count out Europe's big guns yet

I mentioned something similar earlier. There is a lack of top tier young European talent right now in the world of Golf (under 30)

They picked a few oldtimers like Garcia and Poulter as Captains picks that were only playing OK... but there was no real young guns out there that made sense instead.

Also the young players that were on the team on the past that would still be under 30, like Thomas Pieters and Matteo Manassero are not really that relevant anymore.

They are definetely not as strong a team as they were in 2014, 2016, 2018 -- they have lost their spots in the top 20 in the world rankings to Americans who are currently dominating it... they always have the most in the top 20, but never like this.

Europe does have that mystique of always outplaying the talent gap (and winning 12 of the last 17 events).

But 3 factors for me:
1) Europe has done well in Day 1 the last 4 times this was played -- creating some doubt in the Americans. Now the Americans are riding high into day 2 with little doubt.
1) The talent gap is even larger than normal (based on world ranking)
2) Not only is the US team its most talented ever (based on world rankings), they have less "demons" than prior years due to moving out older players.

I still bet on Europe winning this at +200 to start. It was too tantalizing a bet based on their history of pulling off on paper "upsets", But I thin it was just too much to overcome this year,

Rory continues to be the most overrated "great" player. He won't or can't grind when course, opponent, etc are tough. Great quote. Good to great perspectives and insights. Mediocre results.
