I have long been a Gardner fan, and have enjoyed watching him play with the combined joy and intensity he brings everyday. However, I think his time has passed and he should retire. That said, I'm not getting my ass in a big knot because he's back for another year. He's a left-handed batter, and we've had a lot of lost time in the outfield these last few years. Yanks are trying to stay under the $210m cap in 2021 so their tax penalty will reset.

By signing Gardy and O'Day to one year deals w/one year options, they can push much of the tax liability off to 2022 where they'll pay a lower rate.

I see no sense in a dude that's washed getting an option for an additional year.
